Texas EquuSearch Returns to the Basin to Search for a Missing Ft. Stockton Man

By: Sarah Snyder
NewsWest 9

"I think peace and closure is the most important thing to the family," Joe's Brother Lea Daggett, said.

It's a community wide endeavor - a search to find Joe Daggett, a Ft. Stockton man who went missing 20 years ago.

"I think we've all known what's happened for 20 years, we just need to have some closure," Joe's Father Merrell Daggett, said.

"I really feel like West Texas people all come together and help each other out," Lea Daggett said.

On Friday and Saturday, Texas Equuasearch is teaming up with the Pecos County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Rangers, and volunteers from New Mexico, Florida, and Ohio to search every water well in the Imperial and Ft. Stockton area.

"All the information today that's been brought together for the last 14 months leads to a very direct location and now we finally have information that Mr. Daggett is in the bottom of a well," Search Director Sean Henady, said.

The search this year is different from years past. They're using all types of new technology, but most importantly, a special camera that can fit all the way down inside the well searching for clues.

"They're pulling out all the stops on finding Mr. Daggett," Henady said. "The State police are allowing us to use their helicopter in the zones through the resources of Texas Equusearch and bringing aerial imagery equipment, ATV's, horses, anything we can get our hands on."

They're also using a GPS tracking system to pinpoint each well location.

"The 3 suspects worked together and disposed of Mr. Daggett, and put him in the bottom of a well," Henady said.

The search got underway after 2:00 on Friday and will continue through Saturday evening in the Ft. Stockton area.

"I think we're getting really close to closing this chapter and taking a lot of stress off the family," Lea Daggett said.

"I appreciate everyone coming out more than I can say," Merrell Daggett said. "I think it's great they're willing to come out and help. I just hope we can come up with an answer."

Search for Joe Daggett Nearing an End

Staff Report
NewsWest 9

IMPERIAL - After a week of searching investigators are closing in on the hunt to find Joe Daggett, a Fort Stockton man who went missing back in 1988.

This week, cadaver dogs pinpointed a small area on an abandoned ranch in the Imperial area.

On Thursday, the landowner gave the OK to begin digging and now they're just waiting on equipment to be delivered.

They'll focus on a five by five foot well that's filled with debris.

The investigator says he's not sure how deep they'll have to dig.

A team of six local volunteers will help investigators look for Daggett during the next few days.

Arrest Made in 20-Year-Old Cold Case (4-14-09)
2:19

By: Sarah Snyder
NewsWest 9

A cold case is suddenly hot after investigators announced their first arrest.

NewsWest 9 has been following the Joe Daggett case since he went missing 20 years ago.

It's been an 18-month-long investigation, but shortly after 1p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Pecos County Deputies, Texas Rangers, and New Mexico State Police caught their main suspect just outside of Carlsbad, New Mexico, something law enforcement says is a huge step in the case.

They arrested Lightsey Saul, a 57-year-old, originally from Ft. Stockton and charged him with conspiracy to commit capital murder.

"We're still in the process of hoping, maybe, to find the body one of these days," Lead Private Investigator, James Juliano, said. "This is just an avenue we went since we haven't been able to recover, find the body yet."

Over the past year and a half, authorities found new evidence and kicked their search efforts into high gear. Texas Equusearch rolled in along with officials and volunteers who traveled to Pecos County from all over the U.S.

But since NewsWest 9 covered their search in December, authorities continued hunting for clues. And on Tuesday, they found just enough evidence to make the arrest.

"You don't necessarily have to have a body to prosecute," Juliano said. "This individual is actually arrested for conspiracy to commit capital murder in Texas and not actually for the murder itself, so that evidence is pretty solid."

Back in Ft. Stockton, Sheriff Harris broke the news to the Daggett family.

"They're excited something's finally getting done on this case," Harris said. "They're very excited and hopeful we can take this case all the way and get some good results out of it."

Sheriff Harris says if he waives extradition, Saul could be back to Texas in the next couple of days to begin hearings.

The investigator couldn't tell us specifically what type of evidence they uncovered, but authorities say it's not over, more arrests are on the way.

Saul is being held in the Eddy County Detention Center.

Search Crews Narrow Down Location of Missing Ft. Stockton Man

By Sarah Snyder
NewsWest 9

It's been a long search for a Fort Stockton man who turned up missing 20 years ago.

Over the past five days, Texas Equusearch volunteers have brought some of the most advanced search equipment available to the Imperial area. They say what's making the biggest difference are the people who have come out to help.

Texas Equusearch says, the support of this community has played a vital role in their search efforts. We spoke with one of the original search team members who helped look for Joe Daggett back in 1988. He says, it's a mission that has brought all of West Texas together.

"It's just kind of the way West Texans are. When something like that happens, everybody gets out and helps," Spud Curfew, a member of the Crane Fire Department when Daggett went missing in 1988, said.

"They had all kinds of search parties out looking for him: horseback, people in trucks, walking, everything for several weeks back then," Curfew said.

Even when folks headed out for work in the oil fields, they never stopped looking for Joe.

"Everybody was hopeful they'd find him. That was the main thing. Everybody thought that they would just stumble up on him as they were doing their job and working," Curfew said.

It's a hunt that hasn't yet been laid to rest. People in Imperial say, finding Joe will bring closure, not only to the Daggett family, but the entire community.

"I have two sons and a bunch of grandkids and if one of them were missing like that, I would want to know what happened," Imperial Neighbor, Wayne Sherwood, said.

"The community from Imperial has been amazing to support the Daggett family," Sean Henady, with Texas Equusearch, said. "We've put a lot of tension and stress on the environment sometimes, and the locals, seeing this go on and it's a difficult environment for everybody and I just hope that everybody has some patience and realize the Daggett's need some answers."

The private investigator on the Daggett case tells NewsWest 9, Tuesday's search was a huge success. A group called Cin-Tex brought in cadaver dogs to help confirm a specific location, and that's just what they did. Crews now believe a five by five foot area on an Imperial-area ranch is the location of Joe's body.

"Each dog is trained, the handlers are trained and these are well-qualified teams," Henady said. "The handlers are incredible, the dogs are incredible and have been through a lot of other cases, so if it's going to be found by a dog, these teams will do it."

At this point, crews are waiting for permission from the land-owner. Then they'll begin excavating the site hopefully recovering Joe Daggett in the next few days, an end to a mystery puzzling this community for two decades.

PECOS COUNTY - Another man is behind bars in Pecos County arrested in connection with the 20 year old disappearance of Fort Stockton rancher Joe Daggett.

According to the Attorney General's Office, 59-year-old George Bell McIntyre has been charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder.

He is being held on a $500,000 dollar bond.

This is the second arrest in three days.

On Tuesday, authorities in New Mexico arrested 57-year-old Lightsey Saul on Tuesday at a ranch in Eddy County.

According to the indictment out of Midland County, McIntyre and Saul killed Joe Daggett while trying to rob him in March of 1988.

Investigators believe the two men left Daggett's truck at the Midland International Airport after disposing of his body which has still not been recovered.

Saul is being held at the Eddy County Jail without bond, awaiting extradition back to Pecos County.

Missing Man
Reported by: Geoff Tyler
Friday, Dec 12, 2008 @05:28pm CST

Please Select a Bandwidth High | Med | Low UPDATE (12/14/08 10:45) The Equusearch Mounted Search and Rescue Team says they have finished searching Fort Stockton. Now, they're concentrating on horse-head crossing. Equusearch says they will bring in aerial drones on Monday to help with the search Update (12/13/08 4:45) Equusearch is reporting that they have almost finished searching the Fort Stockton area, and are now concentrating on Horsehead Crossing.

Some new information has Texas Rangers believing they are ready to close a 20 year old case. Joe Daggett has been missing for more than two decades. This weekend law enforcement, friends, and neighbors started searching again for Daggett, but unlike years past, they have some information that might finally bring some closure to this case. Law enforcement is hot on the trail of what many considered a cold case. Joe Daggett went missing twenty years ago and law enforcement believes it was foul play. "With all the bits of information gathered by the private investigator, we have a very strong indication through all the leaks ove the last few years by the three suspects, plus the investigation by mr. Giuliani. We have the information that Mr. Daggett is in the bottom of the well. And we're not gonna stop until we find out where that is,” said Sean Henady from Equusearch. Over the next several days, law enforcement and the public will search Horsehead Crossing and Fort Stockton by horse, ATV, helicopter, and even by foot. They’re looking in and around the hundreds of water wells in those areas. They want to end the mystery surrounding Daggett's disappearance. “There's no indication that this was accidental. In fact everything is to the opposite,” said Sgt. Brian Burzynski of the Texas Rangers. And the family is hopeful that they will not only find their loved one, but may also find some justice concerning his death. "I just think they planned it out, covered a lot of their tracks for many years. And it's catching up with them, said Lea Daggett who is a brother of the missing man. Equusearch, a search and rescue team, says they will continue to search for Daggett's remains throughout the weekend, or until they find him. But that there is a shortage of volunteers, who could help them in the search. If you want to help search, call 765-714-2333.

Case from 1988 finally goes to trial

BOERNE — More than 23 years after Joe Daggett's mysterious disappearance from his cattle ranch outside Fort Stockton, a trial began here Tuesday for one of three suspects charged with plotting to rob and murder him.

The defendant, Lightsey Nathan “L.N.” Saul, 59, is the former husband of Sheridan Porter, who Daggett, then 27, was dating when he vanished March 1, 1988.

Extensive searches failed to locate Daggett, who — at the urging of his family —was declared dead in 1995.

His relatives were at the Kendall County Courthouse for the trial, moved here due to publicity in Pecos County.

“We're glad to finally have something happen,” said Bud Daggett, Joe Daggett's brother. “It's been a long time coming.”

Prosecutors say authorities were alerted before Daggett disappeared about allegations that Saul was plotting to kill him, bury his body and leave his truck at Midland International Airport to make it seem like he'd left town.

Saul, a cowboy and rancher, was questioned after Daggett vanished and the truck — as forecast — surfaced in the airport's long-term parking lot.

Investigators lifted no useful fingerprints from the vehicle, but did find a pebble streaked with blood that years later was identified as Daggett's.

Lacking a body, it wasn't until 2009 that indictments in the case were obtained against Saul, who'd since moved to New Mexico, and Fort Stockton residents George B. McIntyre, and Robert Ezell, who are awaiting trial.

“The basic evidence has been there all along. It's just been waiting,” Assistant Attorney General Lisa Tanner said Tuesday in her opening statement.

She said the break in the cold case came from Fred Beck, a cousin of Saul, who claimed in 2007 that the defendant admitted to the killing in 1991.

“He has eluded justice for many, many years,” she said.

Defense attorney Jim Darnell challenged Beck's credibility and suggested Daggett still may be alive. There have been several possible sightings, he said, including one by a friend of Daggett who thought he saw him years after he'd vanished.

Darnell said it was true that Saul expressed his dislike for Daggett, who he feared was exposing Saul's young son to drugs.

“L.N. didn't try to kill anybody. L.N. didn't recruit anybody to kill anybody,” he said.

Darnell also claimed Daggett, a neighbor of Saul, had cheated with Porter before she divorced Saul.

“Joe Daggett helped himself to more than he was entitled to when L.N. was married,” Darnell said.

Saul's alibi that he was home the night Daggett vanished “was solid,” Darnell said. “Just as solid as it is today.”

If Daggett is dead, he was possibly killed by drug smugglers who use the flat tablelands in Pecos County to land their aircraft.

If convicted, Saul faces up to life in prison.

Loving man guilty of murder solicitation
From the Current-Argus
Posted: 11/09/2011 07:50:41 PM MST

From the Current-Argus

BOERNE, Texas — A Loving, N.M., man was convicted Tuesday of soliciting capital murder, and he now has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for his involvement in the disappearance of a Fort Stockton rancher.

According to a news release from the Texas Attorney General's Office, a Kendall County jury on Wednesday sentenced Lightsey Nathan "L.N." Saul, of Loving, to 60 years in prison, along with a $10,000 fine, for his role in Joseph Wayne Daggett's 1988 disappearance.

On Tuesday, the jury deliberated less than an hour before finding Saul, 59, guilty of soliciting capital murder.

Wednesday's sentencing resolved a Fort Stockton cold case that has been unsolved since Daggett mysteriously disappeared on March 1, 1988, at the age of 27.

Daggett, who was romantically involved with the defendant's former wife, is presumed dead, though his body has never been recovered.

After Daggett's disappearance, state and local law enforcement officials found Daggett's truck at the Midland International Airport's long-term parking lot.

Investigators concluded that Daggett was murdered, and that the perpetrators moved the victim's truck to the airport parking lot after hiding Daggett's body.

Since the rancher's disappearance more than two decades ago, the Texas Rangers and local law enforcement doggedly pursued the case and ultimately tied Saul to Daggett's murder.

Saul was taken into custody by New Mexico State Police as a fugitive from
Advertisement
justice on April 14, 2009. At the time he was a ranch hand on the Bill Sibley Ranch on U.S. Refinery Road.

Investigators eventually concluded that Saul solicited an acquaintance to murder Daggett in February of 1988.

During the trial, prosecutors presented substantial evidence of Saul's guilt to the jury, including testimony from witnesses who heard conversations about the plot.

Two other suspects tied to Daggett's disappearance, George McIntyre and Robert Ezell, have also been indicted for conspiracy to commit capital murder.

Those charges - along with separate conspiracy charges against Saul - are currently pending in Midland County.

Man gets 60 years in rival’s vanishing

A Kendall County jury sentenced Lightsey Nathan “L.N.” Saul to 60 years in prison and a $10,000 fine Wednesday for soliciting the capital murder of his romantic rival, Joe Daggett of Fort Stockton, in 1988.

State witnesses called Wednesday described Saul, a New Mexico resident, as violent and not law abiding.

Defense attorney Jim Darnell sought probation for Saul, 59, who is among three men charged in 2009 with plotting to rob and kill Daggett, who was 27 when he vanished March 1, 1988.

Assistant Attorney General Lisa Tanner asked for a minimum term of 23 years, eight months and eight days, the length of time since Daggett was last seen. The remains of Daggett, who was dating Saul's ex-wife, haven't been found.
