Years in the making, the Privateers finally open their first Southland Conference basketball season tonight in Thibodaux. If you didn't catch it, we did a preview podcast on this matchup and the SLC season. Perhaps you could listen on your way to Stopher Gym tonight.

I'll be there and really looking forward to it.

Finally, basketball that counts in the standings. Well, sort of, if it weren't for the NCAA Nazis.

Even though we won't play in the SLC Tournament, the standings very much matter. If the Privateers can come out of the box with a Top 5 type finish, after the hell they've been through...I'd say that would send a message.

Yea, the very same NCAA that pretty much ONLY cares about money and who tries to make it look like they really care about students grades. But they forget that the very kids that are in school now are suffering for a coach or coaches who effed things up while they were here trying to make a name for themselves.

But I'm not bitter.

Pasternack may have not been recruiting a lot of academic superstars, but in our case, the coaches had basically nothing to do with it. Well, an ex-women's basketball coach had a hand in it anyway. But mostly a very thankfully ex chancellor.

I remember being told by someone at UNO that Pasternak was told about this, directed to stop and didn't. But that's water under the bridge now I guess.

and to echo steve, from what I'm hearing, turnovers and missed FT's are killing this team tonite but jude mentioned a few times that Nicholls's Defense is stifling. But Nicholls playing a small lineup should be working in our favor, eh?

And the refs will need new whistles at half. But the type of turnovers we're having is kinda ridiculous at this stage in the season.....ie stepping on the inbounds when taking the ball out. ugh.

Halftime down by 7. Not insurmountable.

Nicholls is playing solid tight defense but they're not forcing the palming, stepping out of bounds type turnovers. Privateers not sharp either. I don't think either team is super sharp, it's hard to be with all the touch fouls. No flow to this game.

40-33 Nicholls at half.

This game is going to end with a 3 against 3 the way these whistles are being blown.
I used to love college basketball. I watched any game that was on tv. Now, with these new 'touch' rules, I can do without it. It takes ANY fun away from the game.

The ncaa has made college basketball what goodell has done to the nfl.......sissy ball.

UNO will need to make a ton of FTs to win this one, so I'm a little discouraged about our chances. Also, I think we're going to be here past midnight.

UNO actually goes on a FT shooting binge, gets within 1, then Nicholls hits a 2 and a 3 to go back up by 6. Under 12 timeout.

Too bad we're not a good FT shooting team or, maybe this would work in our favor? IF these refs are ANY indication of what we're in for in the Southland, I think I'll be raising my BP at games this year. I'm an old man but I'm still full of piss and vinegar!

UNO looking like they may have 50 FT attempts and lose the game. At 45 now and down 70-62, six minutes left. Not even shooting them terribly at 69%. Crazy.

Jude is saying that nicholl's half court offense is what's winning this game for them and that they're just better at that even with our height and maybe better athletes. But if we're not shooting in the mid 70's for ft's, then that's just not acceptable.

turnovers are killing us too, the unforced ones. Also sounds like we're not taking many 3 pt attempts this game....maybe due to nicholl's defense?

Anyway, this game has been so hard to follow on radio with all the foul stoppages even tho jude is doing a GREAT job. It's just not fun when all you hear is a whistle every 4 seconds. I know that's all I've bitched about tonite but...........

National FT average is right around the high 60s I believe. We've just missed a lot because we've shot a ton of them. 77-69. UNO unable to make a dent, just hanging around down high single digits.

Look at #'s 344 and 351. Really sad.

Jude just said that this is THE most ft's attempted in UNO history? Did I hear that right? WOW, what does that say when you have 2 of the bottom schools at ft shooting playing each other and they break records?

ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR FT's ATTEMPTED by both teams. UNO attempted 61, most EVER in uno history.

Whew. Back from Thibodaux and still hearing whistles in my head...

That was a farce. What an intro to the Southland. Thing is, I thought while both teams defended hard, by no means was that an insanely physical game. What can you say? Simply not a basketball game.

If 61 free throw attempts in a loss is not an NCAA record, I would love to know what is. Again, it's frustrating to have 19 missed free throws but we shot about the national college average from the line and 10% higher than our season average. It's tough to complain about that. What got us was the massive amounts of turnovers, many of which were unforced and totally careless. Multiple palmings, stepping on the sideline, one ridiculous one where we screwed up an unguarded inbound pass under our own basket. Passes fired way out of bounds to no one. Just dumb stuff. Regardless of the farcical nature of the game, the team with the 2:22 assist:turnover ratio probably deserves to lose.

Oh well. Hopefully we can grab a road trip split on Saturday.
