Tonight the Privateers host Abilene Christian for their Southland home opener. As it appears ACU and UIW may both win the league on the strength of forfeit victories because of clumsy non-D1 scheduling by several other SLC teams, it's nice that both of these games are actually being played at the arena this week. This is a joke, kind of. |

Scrappy team, that Abilene Christian is. Pretty tight Defense. Considering cory and matt had off games and we still won, that's good. We hit 70% of our FT's, which is VERY good for this team and we seemed to have fewer turnovers than the last 2 games, I'll take it. But in the second half I think I counted 6 missed layups, about 4 were just point blank. ANd then the several easy baskets given up under the basket thruout the game but all told, it's the first win ever for UNO in the Southland, our first home southland game and a win. That's good enough for tonite. I heard on the way home that Lamar is 1-14. WOW. |

It was great to be back in the Arena tonight. I'll take the win, but must teach myself patience as I watch this program (hopefully) develop. Nice to see UNO friends again. |

This team doesn't really have a true PG -- even Gill is more of a ridiculously undersized 2 although in D1 if you're 5'8" you should probably develop your PG skills -- so there's a lot of one-on-one iso in this offense. Even so, 13 assists is an improvement over the Nicholls/McNeese road swing. Turnovers were down as well. Love to see Gill blossoming. The kid is figuring it out before our eyes. Think he will be a good one. He really carried us for a stretch last night. Derenbecker has yet to make an impact on a Southland game. Dixon was off offensively last night but at least gave us 14 boards. Even Isaac Mack looked shaky. The complementary guys -- McPhearson, Gill, Hill, etc -- snagged this one for us, but we need Dixon/Derenbecker to be a consistent 1-2 punch. |
