I'm so sick of hearing these same depressing stories year after year. No matter who the chancellor is, it seems he never has a chance to do his job because they keep taking money away.

I'm really worried that UNO is going to become UNO community college by the lake. I get the feeling this school will never again be what it was. It SICKENS ME!

"Over the past five years, UNO’s slice of the state’s funding pie has fallen by $24 million, from $56 million in 2008 to $32 million for the current fiscal year, Fos said."

I am sure that if you look back to pre Katrina days the drop is even greater. If memory serves me correctly, the LSU system took $10 million plus from UNO since it didn't have the programs or students after the storm and then took more the next couple of years. Of course that forced Ryan to drop some programs then meaing that the students wouldn't return.

Meanwhile, enrollment has declined nearly 50 percent in the past decade, from 17,360 in 2003 to 9,323 in 2013."

Dr. Fos is in a bad situation that he is trying to make better. I don't think he. or others, saw this coming when he was named President. Every year is supposed to be the "last year" for cuts but that hasn't been the case and many don't see it changing over the next couple of years.

I am sure that some "future" students are looking for a more stable situation. No one wants to enter a program and could potentially get cut.

I just hope the next governor and legistlature have the guts to make cuts across the board and not just to higher ed and health care, even if it takes revising the State constitution to do so.

The problem was pushed along by Ryan so he did not have to deal with it. He made cuts to programs for effect insted of to solve problems. If you have one-half the student body you can't keep the same amount or even close to the same amount of staff. UNO is not the only school being cut. It is sad, but it needs to be dealt with in a realistic manner and I thank Dr. Fos for realizing it. Universities all over this country are making cuts, not just in Louisiana. Many of the cuts were brought on by the University Communites themselves spending money on things that have nothing to do with the mission of the University. Others like UNO were hit with a combination of factors. UNO being caught by a sudden cut in available students due to a combination of Katrina and higher standards for incoming freshmen. The faster this is dealt with the better. My thoughts are with the people being affected, but do it now and then we can grow in the future with a more certain grasp of what our university will look like. I have no hope that the next Governor is going to come in and be UNO's Shining Knight.
We need to fix our probems now so that the new Governor will see UNO as a jewel and not a pawn.

Universities all over this country are making cuts, not just in Louisiana.

Not anymore. For many states, the cuts are over and times are changing. According to this article, 37 states increased higher education funding for fiscal year 2014 while only 7 states made cuts:

http://www.governing.com/news/headlines/hi...r-declines.html

Louisiana is one of the 7 states making cuts, but is also by far the largest with a 17.6% downward change this year. Second worst is West Virginia with 8.9%.

Of note, of the 7 with cuts this year, 5 of them actually had increases last year, making Louisiana one of only two to have cut the last two years in a row and the numbers aren't even close when comparing those two states: Missouri cut 0.2% and then 1%. Louisiana cut 5%, then 17.6%.

What's ironic is that I keep reading about how Louisiana's economy is doing relatively well, but it's certainly not translating into higher state revenues.
