This is mostly going to be an officials rant, so let me begin by making it perfectly clear to any SHSU fans who may read this: SHSU is better, they played better, and they deserved to win. The officials in no way determined the winner of this game.

Now...what a clusterf$*%. The Nicholls officiating debacle (70+fouls, 104 combined free throw attempts to refresh your memory) was one thing, but the complete lack of control in this game was astounding. Really from the very beginning. UNO was assessed a pre game technical for dunking in warmups, but both teams were dunking. I guess a Privateer was the only one caught after the officials came onto the floor.

Early on, they were letting some physical play go on but then very quickly whistled a double technical for two guys who were talking to each other barely bumping. Unfortunately our foul was on Dixon, perhaps our best player. His foul total was then a concern the whole way. Traddarius McPhearson was later assessed a technical (and rightly so) for tossing the ball at an SHSU player. But later after a foul, SHSU spikes the ball into the ground, it bounces a good 20 feet into the air and no technical.

And speaking of technicals, Slessinger and Hooten were going bananas at several points in the game. In a game with four technicals assessed on players, they wouldn't give one to either coach when they both probably deserved one at different points.

But my two favorites...A foul is called on UNO for running over a guy setting a screen. The two guys collided AT LEAST a full second before the SHSU shooter releases a jumper. Rightly, they waive off the shot as being after the foul but SHSU's bench goes ballistic so they huddle and then award them a three point shot. Two problems, the shot should not have counted and even if they did count it it was a two. They went to replay and changed it to a two, but I hope they got a good look at how awful a call it was to even count it to begin with.

Then finally...the game was over so this really didn't matter, it just goes to show their incompetence. SHSU was milking the clock and in the final minute launched a shot as the shot clock was expiring. From my vantage point it not only grazed the rim, it clanged off the rim. SHSU got the rebound but one official called a shot clock violation thinking it airballed. He went to the replay...and kept the call as a shot clock violation. Are they penalized if they overturn too many calls after review or something? I can't imagine that shot actually missed rim.

Oh...and I just remembered one more. This was actually the best one. During a timeout the scorer's table wasn't sure if the timeout was a full or a 30. The three officials were huddled together (which they're not supposed to be) and the table was hitting the buzzer trying to get their attention. HORN HORN HORN HORN HORN HORN The three of them stood there oblivious to everything for about 20 seconds before finally realizing. It was so bad, the crowd was yelling at them to look over to the table. When they did we all cheered. We got a good laugh from the guys working the table.

Ugh. Frustrating loss in a game we had a chance to win against a really good opponent. In a game like this, one blink can cost you and it did tonight. Up 56-55, we had consecutive baaaad turnovers and in the blink of an eye SHSU scored 10 straight to go up 65-56. We were done after that.

Both teams played really hard and it was pretty physical but a 2-2 homestand is not good enough as we now head out for a five game road trip.

I never thought that I would be wishing for Sun Belt officials.

Good post. I think you covered it all.

This game was RIDICULOUS from the beginning, as UNOP said. Certainly these refs were below the bottom of any standard, but I'm afraid this is what we're going to see in the southland, and that's just not acceptable.

As far as play, I thought parts of the first half were very good basketball for UNO. Late in the first, they really had SHS in confusion and had 3 straight steals. Then with a 7 pt lead, the refs took over and single handedly made the game 2pts at half. The second half when SHS came out in a zone, I had a feeling it was going to be tough, tho some 3's opened that up a bit. Then the old bugaboo of turnovers and bad calls pretty much doused any hope of an upset.

I saw some things that this team can build on but even tho SHS IS a better team, this was a very very winnable game that could've really been a boost.

I guess I'm too old to chase refs anymore but I'd like to have walked them to their car :)
