It's that time of year. Our schedule isn't out yet, but news of this year's non-conference games is starting to leak out from other sources.

The Rivals site that covers Indiana basketbal has us visiting storied Assembly Hall sometime just before Christmas.

https://indiana.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1648576&PT=4&PR=2

"Over the last couple weeks news of three more non-conference games has leaked in the media. A late December trip to NYC to play Georgetown along with easier home games against Lamar and New Orleans have come to light."

"Additional home games: We expect the remaining homes games to be mostly lower profile opponents coming into Assembly Hall. One of those we've learned is New Orleans of the Southland Conference. The Privateers are coming off an 11-15 season and a 9th place conference finish. Second leading scorer Matt Derenbecker is back but the team will have to replace top scorer Cory Dixon. That game is expected to be played just before Christmas."

The article says that Lamar will also be visiting Indiana for a tournament there (that will also include SMU).

I hope it's far enough before Christmas that I can get over there (I'll likely be traveling to visit family in Anchorage or San Diego for the holiday).

Gotta love the big boys. We're described at the link above both as "cream puffs" and a "no-name school." :D

Still, better to be there than DII or DIII, eh? As we all know, even when it is not at its best, this program can be a pain in the rear to the big conference teams. Even since the last time we made the NCAA or NIT, I've walked out of two arenas with National Championship banners hanging from the rafters after seeing a Privateer victory over the home team (Villanova, NC State).

- - - - - -

"The Hoosiers already have five, what I would call, premier games lined up for next season's non-conference slate. We've known for awhile that Indiana will be hosting Pittsburgh the first week of December in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. This game will be happening in Bloomington for the first time in 3 years. Add to the Pittsburgh game a home showdown with Larry Brown's SMU and you've got an already pretty decent slate for home games. Of course there are going to be some cream puffs sprinkled in. Lamar and New Orleans will be coming to town and they should be far from competitive. However, that's going to happen with every major team's non-conference schedule. Those four games make up roughly half of the home schedule. If the Hoosiers can get one more above average team into Assembly Hall we should be pretty happy as far as purchasing season tickets go."

"That's seven of what is likely thirteen non-conference games already on the books. Already it looks a ton better than last season. However, Glass and company shouldn't be satisfied. If you stack the other six games with opponents that look more like Lamar and New Orleans than Butler, you're just tying an anchor to the aesthetics of the schedule. The Hoosiers shouldn't be playing anymore 300 level teams unless it is a favor to a program. We already have Lamar and New Orleans on the schedule, Indiana can't afford to pack in a lot more no-name schools. They're going to be a potential bubble team and we've seen that selection Sunday is now being used to set an example for teams that don't play anyone out of conference. The administration seems to be well aware of that with our schedule so far, but they can't be satisfied yet."

From what I've heard about Indiana's upcoming team, I think UNO may have an outside shot at a win. We will not even be the best team in the Southland so let's not get carried away, but I expect to be a decent amount better than a "300 level" team this season. We weren't a 300 level team LAST season, even after the late slide (259). I think a 100-spot improvement or so wouldn't be unrealistic, and teams in the mid 100s certainly have enough to take out a low-end major conference team now and then.

The only in-season event currently listed on Lakefront Arena's calendar is "Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure" on December 11th and 12th (Thu/Fri), so we know we won't be at home on those days.

Nice game to get pub for the program. Maybe hook a young Hoosier on coming down in the future. I hope there are a few more of these games with the big guys. I dont expect as many as last year but you never know. I would love to attend a game at Assembly Hall.

Per LA Legislative auditor, for the year ended 6/30/2013, our men's basketball team earned $475.000 in guarantees. Games like Indiana are crucial to our budget, as you can see we spent $800,000 that year.

Just guessing that the guarantee total for this past year was higher with the brutal early schedule but I may be wrong. $76K+ for the Privateer Athletic Foundation is a glaring deficiency.

New Orleans will play at Southern Illinois on December 19th.

http://thesouthern.com/sports/college/bask...e81d48d1ea.html

"SIU returns only two starters off last season's 14-19 team, junior guard Anthony Beane and sophomore guard/forward Sean O'Brien, and will have eight newcomers eligible to compete this winter. The Salukis return four players that started 12 of the last 13 games of the season and six players that started at least one game."

"SIU then closes the non-conference schedule with home games against Chicago State (Dec. 14), Tennessee State [(Dec. 16)], New Orleans (Dec. 19) and Murray State (Dec. 22)."

Official SIU release here:

http://www.siusalukis.com/sports/m-baskbl/.../071414aaa.html

"'With six freshmen and three sophomores on our roster, we've put together a schedule that will challenge our team heading into the conference season,' said third-year head coach Barry Hinson, who returns All-Conference guard Anthony Beane and two other starters from last year's team that finished tied for fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference."

UNO played SIU twice in 2012-13, losing 55-72 at home and 61-74 away.

The Privateers are currently calling ticket holders to thank them for their support of the program. In a message I received from Kevin Hill, the home opener is on Tuesday, November 18th and it'll be the first of 12 home games at Lakefront Arena.

Kevin called this this evening and I had a nice chat with him and told him we were looking forward to the season. I kinda took him off script but he was quick to recover and tell me about the season opener.

He did a good job and I heard others in the background.

GO PRIVATEERS!!

Kevin was working hard, he called my office last night and invited me to renew my tickets and come to the first game. I know this is hard for these guys to do and I let him know I appreciated his call. Second year in a row I got a call from one of the players.

I just wish we would reserve seats in Section E and Section O for UNO season ticket holders. At least we wouldn't have the vistors congregating in the best seats.

Printable schedule releaesd on unoprivateers.com differs from the one talked about in their article. Southern and South AL are listed on the printable schedule. I hope South AL does come to the arena. Otherwise, the home schedule WEAK.

Oh, man. :(

Story:

http://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2014/7/1...0716144138.aspx

Schedule page:

http://unoprivateers.com/schedule.aspx?path=mbball

As you note, Southern (on the road) and South Al (at home) show up on 11/9 and 11/10 on the schedule page, but the phone calls have mentioned 11/18 as the home opener and the article does not mention either of those opponents at all, so it seems that's an error.

If so, we have ZERO DI non-conference home opponents. That is terrible.

Outside of Southland opponents, we have a DII (Pensacola Christian), one NAIA (Central Christian) and one that seems to participate only in the NCCAA (Crowley's Ridge). Three non-conference home games, none in DI? :o

Even if we have $0 available for guarantees, could we not do a no-guarantee home-and-home series against against a regional team (SWAC or Sun Belt or LA Tech or something) that would cost next to nothing? I assume that Indiana, Texas A&M, and TCU are away games only, but is that true of Denver, SIU, and San Diego, also? Are we getting returns from any of these teams (and, if so, why couldn't one have been at home this season)?

It's hard to believe that the only DI opponents entering Lakefront Arena this season will be Southland foes (and Sun Belt teams for their own tournament). :(

A quick scan of last year's schedules shows our fellow (full DI) Southland teams hosting this number of DI non-conference games last season:

TAMU-CC 6 (incl. 3 in a tournament)
Lamar 4
SFA 4
UCA 4
Houston Baptist 2
SHSU 1 (LIU-Brooklyn!)

...but look at the Louisiana schools:
SLU 2
Northwestern 2
UNO 1
Nicholls 1
McNeese 0

And if South Alabama is not coming to the arena is it too much to ask to correct the printable version of the schedule before posting it?

I tweeted to ask them about it. Haven't heard back yet, but I just "refreshed" the schedule page and those two games (Southern away, South Alabama home) are gone.

The UNO athletic department tweeted back "The story is correct, will be fixing the schedule shortly! Apologies for the confusion."

"Apologies for the confusion"

No excuses for this really, its not like this is a busy time. It is absolutely amazing that in the 40 plus years the UNO Athletic Department has existed the faces have changed but not a lot else has.
