Sless and company have done an admirable job under the circumstances. As Steve posted in the other thread, six years is normally pretty long for a coach without proven on-court success but nothing about our situation is back to normal yet. He's a great guy and is heavily invested in New Orleans. And most importantly, looks to have our program on a very strong track moving forward. I'm proud to have him representing the program and look forward to winning a lot of games these next six years. |

I was out of town when this news broke, so did not comment here, but I'll add to the chorus that thinks this is a good move. Coach Sless seems to be building this program, step by step, and seems to be doing it in the right way. As is evidenced by the lack of DI home games on the new schedule, this is a program that is still not working with a budget that is competitive with its conference mates, but we do have high expectations here. We expect that the program will be able to "punch above its weight" in terms of a limited athletic budget because there are other things -- the city of New Orleans, in particular -- that will make UNO more attractive to recruits than some of our more wealthy peers. Coach Sless has shown many signs that he's going to be able to head the program back in the right direction, even within those financial limits. I think Coach Sless should be held to those high expectations, but I also think that giving him a long contract is setting him up for success. A short-term deal may have made that success more difficult. With our budget, it may be that they can't can give him every recruiting tool that some of the big programs have, but the vote of confidence in what he's building and the assurance that he'll be here that a long-term contract provides should be a recruiting tool that he can put to good use. Congrats to Coach Sless on the new contract. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of program he can build on the Lakefront. |
