This article notes that New York high schooler Stephanie Bogda has committed to play sand volleyball at UNO: http://queenscourier.com/2014/st-francis-p...ll-scholarship/ "When you think of the best places to play beach volleyball, New York may not be the hottest choice on the list." . . . "Now Bogda, 17, who has trained and competed for years in sand volleyball, earned a four-year scholarship with Division I University of New Orleans to play sand volleyball, despite the long odds, being from a state where the temperature gets to be near freezing for half of the year. She recently verbally committed to the school." . . . "Bogda continues to play indoor volleyball on travel teams and with St. Francis Prep. But during the summer she partakes in sand volleyball competitions in other states. She also has a rigorous daily training schedule that includes running, two-hour conditioning and personal mentoring from professional sand players, including Brazilian Priscilla Lima." . . . "I’m going to spend a lot of this year on the beach," Bogda said. "People say ‘oh you’re committed, you can relax now.’ Absolutely not. I need to be ready for college." |

This season, according to our press release: "University of New Orleans Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announces the addition of women's sand volleyball to its family of NCAA Division I sports beginning in 2014-2015." http://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2014/5/1...px?path=general ...and spring. I just took a look at the schedules of LSU, Tulane, and UL-Monroe -- all regular season games are in March & April. I don't know if any other Louisiana schools are coming on board for spring '15, as we are. As of now, those are the three NCAA sand volleyball teams in Louisiana. A non-NCAA-run national championship currently takes place in early May. Our press releas says "The first NCAA Championship in sand volleyball will be held in Spring 2016." I don't know who else in the Southland will be adding it. This article says Houston Baptist will add it in 2016 (it also says they will be the first in the Southland, but we've jumped ahead of them in that regard). http://blog.chron.com/sportsupdate/2014/06...vision-1-sport/ |

This official release from HBU says "HBU and New Orleans will be the first programs in the Southland Conference, while TCU is the only other program in the state of Texas." It confirms the Huskies will begin play in spring '16. http://www.hbuhuskies.com/news/2014/6/28/W...0628145448.aspx |

It's taking the place of women's golf, which has to be one of the least expensive sports. They shared a head coach with men's golf, though there was an assistant coach for the women, who I suppose is out of a job. I'm not sure how many (if any) coaches they'll have to add for sand volleyball. Women's golf has a small roster -- I'm not sure how many had full scholarships. That said, assuming some of these sand volleyball athletes cross over and play both volleyball sports, would having both sports (when most of the conference only has regular volleyball) help our regular volleyball team be more competitive (because of the extra scholarships)? - - - - - - 2013-14 women's golf roster (4 out of 7 were freshman who were here one year before being told to their sport was going away): Lauren Aillet Fr. Lafayette, La. / St. Thomas More Brenda Gonzalez Fr. Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico / American School of Torreon Florence King Fr. Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom / English Martyrs School Bridget Landry So. Slidell, La. / Northshore Pair Noibanchong Jr. Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel / Southern Miss Emily Pellerin Fr. New Iberia, La. / New Iberia Sydney Woolfolk So. Orlando, Fla. / Edgewater HS http://www.unoprivateers.com/roster.aspx?path=wgolf& |

Exactly. I'm sure they saved thousands of dollars. That's the point athletics is at. |

I do have to say that the move might be shrewd from another standpoint and that is potential revenue. Women's Golf very likely generated no ticket sales or sponsorships. I can't say for sure, but my guess is that revenue from women's golf was near zero. I think beach volleyball has revenue potential. Obviously we are not going to draw thousands of people to a match, each paying $10, etc. So I don't want to overstate the potential. But in addition to cost savings, we might actually add a bit to the top line, too. Of course, in my opinion, while it might currently be the situation we are in, we will nevert be able to cut our way to prosperity. Ultimately athletics has to develop and implement a plan that will generate significant new dollars and interest in order to grow. |

"I think beach volleyball has revenue potential. Obviously we are not going to draw thousands of people to a match, each paying $10, etc. So I don't want to overstate the potential." No word on a coach, playing court, or schedule. And if there is a chance to generate revenue, why isn't traditional volleyball charging admission? |

Did they? We assume they did, but we don't know how many sand volleyball scholarships they plan to offer and we don't know how many golf scholarships they did offer, so it's hard for us to say. The campus plan now includes building two sand volleyball courts with a Fall 2014 completion target, so they've added some immediate expenditure there. See page 69 of the Master Plan (78th page of the document). http://www.uno.edu/president/documents/master-plan-2020.pdf Our women's golf team last year went to Houston, Hattiesburg, Mobile, Lafayette, Jonesboro, Memphis, Huntsville, and Magnolia (Texas for the SLC tournament). I'm guessing those were all bus trips. There are currently only 3 other sand volleyball teams in the state -- can we bus to all the games? Tulane's sand volleyball team will travel to Arizona once, Florida twice, plus Birmingham, Baton Rouge, and Monroe. LSU's team travels to South Carolina once and Florida three times, as well as New Orleans and Monroe. Most stops are muliple days (at least two, sometimes three) as they play in tournaments with multiple teams. Would we bus to Arizona, South Carolina, and southern Florida? If not, are there enough closer teams to play? It would seem unlikely they'd trade a bus sport for one that has to fly a few times per season. |

So, they won't have to fly? That's great. I guess we'll see for sure when the schedule comes out. Who is buidling the pits? I don't live in the area now -- I was on campus in June and won't be again until I get back for a basketball game -- so I can't really stop by to look. |

They are saving money. The University is building the sand courts. Not Athletics. So there is no immediate cost to athletics. |

Please don't take my posts above to think that the change was not to save money. I always assumed that had to be the reason. Still, the potential for increased travel costs does look real until more schools have the sport. I'd be curious to know what the savings are expected to be over the long haul, given that change made us drop out of a Southland Conference sport for a non-conference sport. According to this, DI schools with regular volleyball (12 scholarships max -- headcount sport) have a max of 3 scholarships available for sand volleyball; women's golf had a max of 6 (of course, I don't know if we were giving the max before): http://www.scholarshipstats.com/ncaalimits.html I have no idea how many we're currently using of the 12 for regular volleyball. Anyone know? As the list above doesn't list sand volleyball as a headcount sport, if that's accurate it would mean you could give out partial scholarships for that sport. Not a big deal, but I'd be interested in how that all works together. The change does make you wonder about long-term planning in the program given that we had just signed four freshmen to the golf squad on 5/8/13, then we announced we're dropping the program on 5/1/14. ![]() http://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2013/5/8...aspx?path=wgolf http://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2014/5/1...px?path=general |

It seems like the university has found a new Laplace Privateer. The people who post on this board know the condition and financial constraints of the athletic department. Most have been around for decades. I would say all of the ones I know who post were here when Maestri had to take the phones out of Tim Floyd's office because we couldn't afford any morelong distance calls for recruiting. The department has never been properly funded and has never had a long term plan to fund raise. Student fees can never be the financil foundation for any successful athletic department. |
