UNO's volleyball season starts on August 28th/29th at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament and the first home games are at the Chamber for the New Orleans Invitational on September 4th/5th vs. Providence, Eastern Washington, and LaSalle.

http://www.unoprivateers.com/schedule.aspx...ule=284&path=vb

The Privateers volleyball team, coming off an 0-16 league mark in 2014 (6-24 overall), is again picked to finish last in the Southland. In the 13-team league, our team received 12 points in both the SID poll and the Coaches poll, so there seems to be a unanimity of view about the type of squad we'll have this year.

http://www.southland.org/news/2015/8/5/WVB_0805154437.aspx

We are one of 5 league teams without any players among the 18 total players in the first or second team preseason all-Southland team.

Info on the teams in the New Orleans Invitational.

Providence was 6-26 last season (2-16 Big East; 9th of 10). They have been picked 10th of 10 in this year's coaches poll, with the conference press release saying this about their team: "Providence welcomes five newcomers to a roster led by a heavy upperclassman presence. Juniors Kayla Johnson, Kayla Fitzgerald, Michelle Cruz and Abigail Dix, and seniors Jordan Wiesler and Nicole Fletcher return for the Friars."

LaSalle was 10-21 overall (3-11 A-10; T-7th of 10).

Eastern Washington was 9-20 overall (5-11 Big Sky; 5th of 6 in North Division).

All are coming off poor seasons, though none so poor as the Privateers.

Recap from January -- the story linked below said the program has 9 new players coming in (including our first player receiving a sand volleyball scholarship -- the sand volleyball team went 0-24 in its inaugural season).

http://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2015/1/1...0112151022.aspx

NAME HEIGHT POSITION HOMETOWN HIGH SCHOOL

Stephanie Bogda 5-7 S/L Levittown, N.Y. St. Francis Preparatory HS
Blessing Dunn 5-10 OH Jacksonville, Ala. Jacksonville HS
Kaitlyn Grice 6-2 MB Valrico, Fla. Bloomingdale Senior HS
Lane Hindenburg 6-0 OH Palatine, Ill. Fremd HS
KeKe Irby 5-10 MB Liberty Township, Ohio Bishop O'Connell HS
Camila Lau 6-1 MB Porto Alegre, Brazil CEM Pastor Dohms
Zoe Lindsey 5-8 S Bull Valley, Ill. McHenry West HS
Shay Reimer 5-6 L Surrey, B.C. Canada Pacific Academy
Samantha Uline 5-11 DS/L Sloatsburg, N.Y. Suffern HS

Of note, Bogda and Lindsey do not show up on the 2015 indoor roster on the official website, but Bogda is listed on the 2016 beach volleyball roster. Coach Van Norden said "Steph is as strong of an indoor player as she is outdoor," so I thought she'd be playing both.

http://www.unoprivateers.com/roster.aspx?path=vb

http://www.unoprivateers.com/roster.aspx?path=svball

Our schedule release from June says the team has 10 newcomers:
http://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2015/6/1...0612150544.aspx

Here's an article about Hindenburg from December. It indicates that Lindsey is her best friend.

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/2014121...orts/141218956/

So, the team has had a massive turnover as Van Norden enters her second season. 6 of 15 listed on the roster are freshman. It'll be interesting to see if this recruiting class can make the Privateers more competitive.

I liked the fact that Van Norden did not make any excuses last year in post match interviews. It remains to be seen if she can make progress but I am tired of people being ok with UNO losing. I appreciate the difficulty of building programs from scratch but I will never be ok with losing.

Not a bad start for the Privateers. They beat Presbyterian and Fordham while losing to the hosts in the Florida Gulf Coast tournament, then won 1 of 3 (defeated LaSalle, lost to Eastern Washington and Providence) in their own tournament for a 3-3 start to the season.

Next up is a trip to the UNC Asheville tournament where they play the hosts, South Carolina state, Alabama A&M, and The Citadel over three days (Thur-Sat).

After giving hosts UNC-Asheville (6-3 current record) a good run in the opener (losing 1-3, winning the 3rd game and losing the 4th game 26-28), the Privateers won all three games the rest of the weekend beating South Carolina State 3-0, Alabama A&M 3-0, and The Citadel 3-1 to improve to their overall record to 6-4.

Very positive start coming off a 6-24 season. Sure, these wins aren't against the strongest opponents (Presbyterian is now 1-9; Fordham 4-7; LaSalle 4-7; SC State 0-7; Alabama A&M 1-10; The Citadel 4-7), but all six are DI wins.

It's too early to say how competive the team will be in the Southland, but there's reason for hope of an improvement on 0-16 last season.

Congrats to the Privateers on a successful trip to Asheville this weekend.

Southern Miss (now 12-1) defeated UNO 25-16, 25-19, 25-21, so the Privateers drop to 6-5 on the season.

UNO hosts a 3-team tournament this Fri/Sat, playing Tennessee State at 7pm on Friday and Grambling at noon on Saturday.

(Those two teams will face each other at 1pm on Friday).

All games at The Chamber.

On Friday, the Privateers defeated Tennessee State (5-6) 3 sets to 1. On Saturday, the Privateers swept Grambling (2-9).

UNO improved to 8-5 and opens Sun Belt play with visits to Houston Baptist (7-7 overall, 4-0 at home) on Thursday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11-4 overall, 1-0 Southland, 5-0 at home) on Saturday.

The Privateers have already improved on last year's 6-24 season, but now it's time to see if they're going to improve on an 0-16 league record from last season, though a win on the road at either of these two programs might be too much to expect -- HBU was picked 4th/5th (coaches/SIDs) and TAMUCC was picked 2nd/3rd in the preseason while picking up a couple of 1st-place votes in each poll.

They don't play a team picked for the lower half of the league until they visit Nicholls (11th/9th) on October 6th.

UNO lost both games on their roadtrip to drop to 8-7 (0-2 Southland). The Privateers were swept by Corpus Christi, but did take a game off of Houston Baptist before losing 1-3.

The Privateers play at Tulane (6-7, 1-1 American) tonight.

The Privateers fell to 8-8 with a 4-set loss to Tulane.

Tulane 25-15-25-25
UNO 18-25-16-19

Next up is a road trip to very tough Central Arkansas (7-9, but 3-1 in the league) on Thursday, then one next Tuesday at Nicholls (5-9, 0-2) in which we may have a shot at a first Southland win after losing 36 straight (0-2 this year, 0-16 last year, 0-18 in 2013 :( ).

Big win! Third year in the league; first league win. Congrats to the team. They're now 9-9 overall, 1-3 in the Southland.

The Privateers will now be home for the next five matches, including three in the league, with Southern on Thursday night and Southeastern on Saturday night up next.

Privateers get second straight Southland win, this time over SLU at home. Van Norden has turned around every program she's coached, in the process of doing it here as well.
