I missed that....also saw that the roster was down to 12-13 players. Seems that they've removed the BM kid from the game roster as well as the young kid from France, although thee were still listed in the color booklet (likely because they aren't printing any more). Maybe these guys will be redshirted? Is it too late to do so? Or were grades the reason? As for predictions, I don't follow the Southland well enough yet to know enough to do so........but I'd hope that we are in the top half and in the tournament. I may miss most/all of tonight's game sadly....due to a prior engagement. Good luck Privateers! |

These were my predictions on twitter Saturday morning before conference play kicked off: 1 SFA, 2 Corpus, 3 Lamar, 4 New Orleans, 5 NW St, 6 Sam Houston St, 7 Houston Baptist, 8 Nicholls, 9 McNeese, 10 Southeastern, 11 UCA. I think SFA is one, Corpus Christi is two, and I'm pretty confident in Lamar being third. I think we could finish as high as third, but from 3 on down it's up for grabs. Based on their 20+ point home loss to HBU, I think I rated Northwestern State too high. They seem to be a real mess without Jalan West. I still think they have a lot of talent, but man have they been lousy. And while I still have SFA as the top dog, they are absolutely down a notch from where they were the last couple years. So yeah, the league is up for grabs. This would be a fantastic year to grab a top four spot and at least one bye in the Southland tourney. And I mentioned twitter...if you're not on twitter I can't recommend it highly enough, especially if you use an iphone or any other smartphone. It's great for quickly and easily commenting during games. I'll have to put together a must-follow list for UNO and SLC discussion soon for any new twitter users. |

Also, as it relates to UNO and Lamar tonight, LU has announced a new deal with ESPN3. Starting tonight their games will be streamed. So both the women and men can be watched live on ESPN3 tonight. |

So while i was able to follow scores tonite, I couldn't WATCH the game on ESPN3 until 12 mins left in the 2nd half. Seems we led THE.WHOLE. GAME. but of course when I turned it on, up by 12, we start losing the lead, missing layups and ft's.....so it's ME who's causing all this unnecessary stress. Seems I missed a HUGE Kevin Hill game (but i did see him miss a few ft's late ). And it seems that while we have trouble holding late leads and in close games (ULL, TULANE, UMASS) we DId win a HUGE conference game on the road against a seemingly very game Lamar team. Not sure why Reed was out of the game the last 5 mins after hitting 3 of 4 3's (that I witnessed) but I assume it was for Defensive purposes. I'm glad we won so that the guys don't have to feel like they can't hold a lead and lose confidence. So, without more delay, since some on here seem to think I don't like Kevin, as I call it like I see it, I'll close with this: CONGRATS KEVIN!!!!!!!!!! GROW ON THIS GAME, SEE WHAT YOU DID WELL AND KEEP IT UP....YOU LOOK LIKE THE SOPH KEVIN I REMEMBER FROM 2 YEARS AGO. |

Statement win! It's never easy, especially against one of the better Southland teams on the road, so I figured we weren't hanging on to a double-digit lead. We had completely lost momentum by the end and it wasn't looking too good, but they found a way in the last minute. What a game from Kevin Hill, he just willed us home tonight. Holy hell it was nerve-wracking though, having to wince through THREE Lamar three-point attempts to win the game. GAH. I just wanted a split with this two-game road swing to open SLC play, but of course now I'm greedy and want both. If you get both that is a SERIOUS statement that we are going to be a factor this year. |

Agreed Steve. I can't say much since I missed 2/3 of the game but to hear the ESPN broadcast say over and over that UNO Led the entire game and to see us start to fade and miss ft's, some sloppy passes and guys that should NOT dribble in traffic do so, I, like you, was thinking the worst but they showed me tonite. I think losing a 4th game like this, even tho on the road, would have been seriously debilitating for the guys, and us fans. |

Game Story from Lamar site: http://www.lamarcardinals.com/news/2016/1/...0104162359.aspx http://www.unoprivateers.com/documents/201...amar.pdf?id=830 Looks like Lamar hit a BUNCH of 3 ptrs (10) and UNO held them almost 20 pts below their avg For those that watched the whole game........did we cause most of their 28 turnovers or were most just their inexperience and sloppiness? I ask because the part I saw, UNO's Defense looked like lots of hands everywhere making it tough for Lamar. |

Looking back at the pre-season predictions thread, I see Sporting News had Lamar 9 and UNO 10, while CBS had UNO 6 and Lamar 8. Both of those have Northwestern State at second. That isn't looking likely at the moment, though one game doesn't make a conference season. For comparison, here's a repeat of those two predictions from the other thread: Sporting News' Soutland Conference prediction: 1. Stephen F. Austin 2. Northwestern State 3. Corpus Christi 4. Sam Houston State 5. Southeastern Louisiana 6. McNeese State 7. Incarnate Word * 8. Houston Baptist 9. Lamar 10. New Orleans 11. Nicholls 12. Abilene Christian * 13. Central Arkansas ** * banned from post-season due to transition from D2 ** banned from post-season due to APR penalties - - - - - - CBS Southland rankings: 46. Stephen F. Austin 154. Northwestern State 186. Texas A&M-CC 204. Sam Houston 210. Incarnate Word 269. New Orleans 306. McNeese State 314. Lamar 327. Houston Baptist 329. SLU 333. Nicholls 340. Abilene Christian 342. Central Arkansas |

Does any other league make their tournament as weighted in favor of the high seeds as the Southland's tournament? #1 & #2 only have to win two games in two days to win, #3 & #4 have to win three games in three days, while #5, #6, #7, or #8 have to win four games in four days. I know many leagues have one bye for the higher seeds, but I wonder if there is any other bracket out there as weighted against an upset as the SLC one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Southlan...ball_Tournament |

I believe the Sun Belt currently uses the same double bye setup. |

This win seems really sweet. Beating Tic and Lamar on the road and starting conference play with a W! Been smiling since the buzzer. |

Thanks. Speaking of the Sun Belt... Coastal Carolina will be joining our old league in 2016-17 as a full member, though their football team will join the league in 2017. The Privateers vs. Chanticleers matchup of my freshman season is still my all-time favorite name matchup. Hard to believe our leadership hasn't been able to develop our program like those who have taken our place in the Sun Belt, for instance (Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Texas State, South Al, etc.), or others (Old Dominion, etc.).

Yep, I've actually found myself looking for and reading articles on the game, as well as a Lamar Msg board, which doesn't have much on the game other than some are upset at Tic already. For me, since I know very little about the other teams in the Southland, I knew very little about Lamar but it seems that they have good talent and our defense just slowed them down enough for our offense (which didn't necessarily shoot all that great) to win. And I'm ok with that. I still think Tic is a good coach but I wonder if maybe Schless's guys did a better job of scouting than Lamar did for us? |

Obviously though, the NW State predictions were pre-Jalan West injury. That kid is a high-major player, losing him should knock them down several notches. I'm sure they'll find some sort of groove without him at some point but they won't be as good. I think Shaun's forecast is a lot closer to reality at this point now that we've had a chance to see everyone in pre-conference. That's why this was such a big win for us -- if you can beat a team you'll be in tight competition with for a bye, on the road, that's a solid win. |

Right. I'd heard about that injury, but forgot about it when I wrote that message. ****** I don't know if we'll be able to pull it off, but we're looking at fares for the first weekend of Mardi Gras -- our son hasn't been to a Mardi Gras parade since he was too young to remember. A trip then would 1) be for his birthday, 2) (re-)introduce him to Mardi Gras when it's not as crazy as the second weekend... and 3) would get us there for the McNeese & Nicholls home games! He also already has one of those days off (grade preparation day for teachers) so he would miss one less day of school than I thought. |

Exactly. An enormous win on the road to start conference play. Based on everything right now (and yeah, it's still real early) we slide ahead of Lamar and perhaps into direct competition with Sam Houston State for the 3rd seed...oh, look who we have an opportunity to knock off on the road this Saturday! |

A win gives either team some nice momentum. The Bearkats have opened conference play with two road wins (at Incarnate Word by 6, at Northwestern State by 15). Should be an exciting matchup. ****** Is the Lamar game still available on ESPN3? I was able to follow along on twitter yesterday, but not watch, and would like to watch it if I can. Thanks. |
