What a strange thing. Tim Floyd's UTEP Miners beaten by his UNO successor, Tic Price and Lamar, 66-52. Retires after the game.

Saw a tweet that said his health factored in to this decision. https://twitter.com/DanWolken?ref_src=twsrc...7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Wow is right.

I remember Tommy Joe Eagles as the head coach taking over from Tim. My son and I were at the father / son camp the week end of father's day. My son asked Tommy Joe if he could be the water boy the next season since he had done it for Tim for a few years. Of course the passing of Tommy Joe was tragic. My son has a ball that Tommy Joe signed for him at the camp.
On the sideline of the court was a young man sitting on the chair. In my mind Tommy Joe had recruited a really good sized power forward. I walked up to him, thanked him for coming to UNO and asked him what position he played. He calmly said he played forward. I looked at his size and said I couldn't wait to see him on the court next year.

That is when he corrected me and said he was the assistant coach. His name was Tic Price.

Tic and I still laugh about that when I see him.

GO PRIVATEERS!!!

Surprising. I hope the health issues are nothing serious.

His retirement is kinda sad for me. Tim took over as UNO's head coach during my senior year at UNO (1988-89). Tim was a young coach, full of piss and vinegar back then. His retirement somewhat marks the end of an era for me and makes me feel my age.

In all of his stops in his coaching career, I think UNO and UTEP are two institutions dearest to him.

Wish him good health and a full life in retirement.

Same. It sure does, doesn't it? Seems just like yesterday he was one of the brightest young up-and-coming coaches in college basketball. I think of this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HtowL-wKU4&t=8s

I saw somebody on Twitter saying there should be an ESPN 30-for-30 on Floyd's career. The Bulls fiasco, OJ Mayo, the fight with Andy Enfield, breaking up the casino fight, etc. So many things.

That's good stuff in that video.

I loved our rivalry with La Tech.

And look at the crowds at Lakefront Arena!

Glory days...

Great memories from the video but a bit bitter sweet. I'd gladly sell one of Steve's souls to relive those days.

Best wishes to Tim Floyd on his retirement. I'm sure that he'll be doing a lot of fishing. Tim was my favorite coach at UNO in my 40 years of support, and it wasn't all about the wins. He was such a nice guy. I remember getting gas at the Exxon station on Causeway near the bridge and spotting Tim across the parking lot. He saw me too and abruptly comes running across the lot to shake my hand and say hello. I'll always remember that. I wish him the best.

The Tim Floyd that we knew here definitely differs from his national image. Tim and the bright lights never meshed well and were an ill fit. He had to move on because money, but he would've been personally happier staying at the mid-major level his whole career.

UTEP was a return to that level, but by then he was past his prime. Tim lost a ton of recruits and transfers his last few years there and it feels like the non-floor-coaching aspects of college basketball have passed him by (his coaching is still there though -- UTEP's turnaround last year during the last two months of the season was vintage Floyd).

What might have been had bass fishing won out over ice fishing way back then...

Tim is the benchmark of what UNO basketball should be at the Lakefront. I hope that he makes his way back to the area and settles down with his family here. The fishing is much better in Louisiana. I wish him the best in retirement.

Nice to see Tim Floyd seated with Archie Manning at tonight's Pelicans-Bulls game at the New Orleans Arena. The Cox broadcast showed them together. I'd love to see Tim at a UNO game in the future.

That wouldn't surprise me, especially if Maes attends the game.

I didn't know that Tim and Archie have been good friends since 1971.

Tim is making the rounds. He was at the NWST-Southeastern basketball game on Saturday to see Mike McConathy. I'm going to assume he'll find his way into Lakefront Arena at some point soon. His buddy McConathy will be here next Wednesday.

I echo those who feel Tim retiring is the end of an era... and making us feel old. He took over in my third year here and in my first year of operating the arena scoreboard, so I had the pleasure of seeing (the home games of) his entire era from the scorer's table at midcourt. I learned so much about what makes a great coach from watching him.
