No matter how low one's expectations were going into the season, you never want to lose a home playoff game. If you lose a home playoff game you have not gotten as far as you could have reasonably expected to. I had basically no hopes for the playoffs at the start of the season and at 0-2 there is nothing anyone could have said to make me believe this team would end up 11-5 and hosting a playoff game. But once you're hosting one you better win it. In all likelihood, Minnesota will finish us off next week. They're better than us and they're at home, so it's the most probable thing, but the Saints are good enough to take advantage with a handful of lucky breaks, so who knows. It's been a fun season, hard not to be happy with it at this point regardless. Goodell is never letting us win the whole thing so this is pretty good. Cam Newton's injury reminded me of a joke I saw on Twitter about something else that I saw a few weeks ago. Namely, if the NFL's concussion protocol had been in effect in Dallas 1963, they'd have sent JFK back into the parade. |

Winning at Minnesota is very unlikely, esp with SO MANY INJURIES and now down a great offensive lineman, again. But as you said steve, you'd better win the one home playoff game you had or shame on you. It wasn't easy but, it was fun. |

So, does the best team win the Super Bowl, or the team which manages to stay the heathiest? Or the team with the best backups? I've heard that the Saints have lost 9 starters since the beginning of the season, although I haven't checked that out. |

I think that in any given year it can be any of the above and then add a category for luckiest. Take the 10-6 Wildcard NY Giants that knocked off the 16-0 juggernaut Patriots or the 9-7 Giants that beat the 13-3 Patriots a few years later. Clearly they weren't the most talented team at the time. And the Patriots, if I recall, weren't necessarily dealing with an unusual amount of injuries. But the Giants navigated the playoffs in both years and took down Goliath. |

It takes some luck too. As far as injuries, as of last night with Andrus Peat breaking his leg, the saints have 18 players (more than half were starters or were projected starters at the beginning of the season) on IR. Deep team this year but you can only go so deep. The saints have the best QB left in the NFC. That may have to do for us. |

Just continuing this thread for one more week..........I'm a little surprised at the number of national folks picking the saints. Its not near unanimous but more than I expected. I can't wait. |

Well, that has to be the toughest loss in the history of the Saints. I can't remember worse; even Atlanta's "hail mary" reception decades ago. This one cost us a possible NFC Championship. |

Kinda equals SF's last play against a VERY GOOD saints team in 2011. Both teams fought back. Maybe the best saints team in history. that said, 43 needs to learn fundamentals of HOW to tackle instead of trying to get on ESPN highlights. The game was over, WON basically if he just simply tackles. In or out of bounds. but he whiffed. As Hebert said on wwl radio, "this will be played for the next 25 years".........sad for him. Sad for an offense that played an AWESOME second half. But you know the falcons, steelers and titans fans feel the same way. But the viking fans think of only redemption since we were handed the SB in 2009, right? This will hurt a while and will only be substituted by some great UNO basketball. Its all I got now, boys. Pity me.

Yeah, well... everybody does that stuff now. They must be teaching it for some reason, though what that is I have no idea. We should probably do Williams a favor and see what we can get for him, he will never be known for anything else as long as he's here. 2011 was worse because that team would've won the Super Bowl if they'd gotten past SF. This team probably would've at least gotten to the Super Bowl, though, so it hurts. I was pretty much at peace with losing this game until we went to the trouble of coming all the way back from 17-0 to win miraculously only to massively blow it in historic fashion. How did we not have six guys standing on the goal line for that last play? It looked like a defensive set you'd see on some random play midway through the second quarter. |

He makes the tackle and the game is over. I don't think they could have gotten the ball set up and snapped to stop the clock in time for the FG attempt. It hurts but given the fact that after the 2nd game of the season many thought the Saints would be at home watching other teams playing in the playoffs. I am not happy we lost but it was a much better season than many of us expected. I wonder now what we do with Brees and his free agency. Can we place a franchise tag on him? If so what does that cost? Do we sign him to a 3 year contract? If so we can minimize cap space. Who do we try to retain on the roster? Snead, Vaccaro, others? I think the core of a good solid team is in place. We just need to fill a few holes and beef up the OL and the DL. The skill players seem to be in place for next season. Your thoughts? |

I think first and foremost they gotta get Brees a tight end. He loves his TEs. A Fleener type signing, only good. Gotta say though, basically any time you hear "we'll be back" from a team that made a magical run and fell just short, they never make it back. But it definitely took me by surprise -- I thought the window was long closed and they should have dealt Brees years ago, but everything fell into place this season. Basically a perfect draft -- I mean, you not only got several really good players, but all guys ready to contribute a lot and immediately. Then a lot of stupid things started happening in our favor. The Redskins game, the butt interception. This team had a certain quality to it. Ten million guys on IR and they just kept coming at you. A rare quality not easily reproduced even with roughly the same group. The Saints had a big hill still to climb even if they'd hung on, as probably nobody is beating The Borg if you get to that point, but you never completely know in a one-game scenario. Clearing this game would've made it a possibility. You hate to blow an opportunity like that. Opportunities are REALLY rare, even if the future looks rosy. |

I was thinking that too, but all the Vikings needed was a field goal. The Saints had to play for the underneath sideline catch and then a run out of bounds and subsequent field goal with 5 seconds left to win the game. I don't necessarily have a problem with the defense, except that they didn't execute it properly. He needed to make a tackle inbounds. |

Yeah, due to circumstances beyond my control I was forced to follow the last 20+ seconds on Twitter only, so I didn't realize quite how much time was left when they snapped the last play. Still don't understand how nobody at all was behind that play for 35 damn yards, but they couldn't have parked the whole defense on the goal line either. If it makes anyone feel any better, it would have been a challenge to keep him in bounds and they probably win on a FG at the gun anyway. Doesn't make ME feel better, but there you are. |
