I am currently working on skull designs for the known dracosuchids and their close relatives, based on the descriptions given by Frost. I've traced the skull off of Jamie Headden's Terrestrisuchus skeletal, which I'll be using as a base for dracosuchids:![]() So far, I've only begun work on Protodracosuchus sanies. As you can probably tell from the shoutbox, I've been meticulously checking every little detail of Protodracosuchus' skull so my drawing is accurate (I actually wouldn't be surprised if I came off as annoying, apologies if I did). Here's what I've got: ![]() This skull is based exactly on the given description in the profile, as well as what I've been told from the shoutbox. The skull is raised at the back end, and tapers down to a fairly pointed snout. The raised skull makes it much deeper in profile than in Terrestrisuchus, and is much more triangular shape. The orbits and temporal fenestrae have correspondingly been raised higher, and this allows room for the subfenestral fossa, a.k.a. the location of the venom sacs. I have received conflicting information regarding the positioning of the venom sacs; the profile states they are positioned behind the eyes, while in the shoutbox I was told that they were placed in "the space in the middle of the jaw", which I assume is the antorbital fenestrae. However, considering the skull is raised at the back to make room for the venom sacs, I went with their placement behind the eyes (sort of). In keeping with the profile, I have made the bone above the eye quite rugose, corresponding with the (presumably soft-tissue) ridged crests. A feature that was not in the profile that I have added myself was expanding the antorbital fenestra. My reasoning behind this is that as the skull became taller and the animal more flighted, the fenestra would expand to make the skull lighter. This is not the final design, this is just a prototype, I want to be sure of the placement of the venom sacs and the design of the eye crests first before it becomes official. I require Frost's opinion of it first. |
