Genus: Carnivenator Species: empirator Name means: Meat hunting Emperor Temporal Location: 70 MYA- 66 MYA Geological Location: Montana south to New Mexico, and west to Washington Diet: Arbrosuchids, other Dracosuchids, small dicynodonts Description: 16-23 feet long, 7-8 feet, 20-28 foot wing span Short, compact skull, rather bulky body, heavy tail. Large boney triangular crests along the length of the snout. Teeth are curved and serrated, built for slicing apart flesh. Scaly feathers along the sides of the neck, body, and tail. Small flattened scutes along the back of the neck, back, and tail. Tail is rounded with small raised scutes along the tip. Wings are short and wide, meant for short distance flying. Young have false eyespots that fade with age. Usually a dull brown or rusty red, with dark brown stripes along the side of the neck and tail, connected by a large stripe the runs the length of the body. Underbelly is usually a light cream color. The wings are typically cream colored on the bottom and rusty red on top, with dark brown stripes along the back edge of it. Behavior: Typical of the group, Carnovenator are mostly solitary, with males holding large territories of a few miles, with females scattered across the area. Males are fiercely territorial, with bloodshed not being uncommon among territorial fights. Carnovenator will typically ambush prey from above, dive bombing or jumping down and biting into the neck, often a hatchet bite. If the prey struggles too much after the initial attack they typically back off, following the prey as it bleeds out from the bite, either letting it die from blood loss or finishing it when it’s weak if particularly starving. Females care for the young alone, the male mating and then leaving. There’s no standard mating season, and females will often hunt to put on weight so they can survive the three month incubation period after laying the eggs, during which they will not leave the nest. After the three months, young will be cared for extensively, with the female leaving the nest only to find food. The young will leave the nest after six months. During this time they will stick together in a small pack that slowly disperses as they age. Females will leave to find mates, while males leave to claim their own territory. Mating Habits: Males will typically try and attract any females that enters their territory, typically by way of mating call and mating dance, flushing their crests with blood. The male will then accompany the female and attempt to show his strength by hunting, after which he will give the kill to the female. If she accepts it, she will typically find a place within the territory to nest. If not, then she will either leave, or attack the male to eat him. Edited by Dilophoraptor, Nov 9 2014, 04:48 AM.
