Genus: Stigisuchus Species: atrox Name means: "Fearful Crocodile of the River Styx" Temporal Location: 1.80MYA-Present Geological Location: Mediterranean area of Europe, down to Egypt and the Middle East (Fossils show a range as far as India's west coast) Diet: Aetosaur Specialist, but will hunt other animals Description: One of the Few Phytosaurs that survived the Pleistocene Ice Age in the colder regions, S. atrox has a fused tooth plate at the front of its jaws and strong crushing teeth at the back atypical of other Ankylodonta. Blueish-black scales and a white-yellow underbelly produce the countershading this animal uses as protection from sea predators. S. atrox is often seen on the shores of the rock areas of the European Mediterranean, but some subspecies are found in Eastern Africa and the Middle East. Often get to around 20 feet long and 3 feet tall, these phytosaurs are surprisingly light and well acquainted with navigating mountainous rockies as well as salt water seas. Behavior: Surprisingly less aggressive than most Ankylodonta, S. atrox is noted for having a quick attack on Aetorsaurs of its range. They often spend time sunbathing. They often ly in wait either on land or in shallow water for some prey to come by, then it will strike once prey come close enough. Males often Duke it out by biting legs or at the face of their opponent. This can be either Territorial disagreements or for mating rights. Females will often lay a large clutch, and will watch them until they hatch. one they hatch, the Mother will keep an eye on them until they reach a year old, when they can leave home and live on their own. |
