The science of route 001

A dim glow on the eastern horizon heralds the coming dawn as a woman and her new friend walk the quiet path in the waning night.

"This psychic type thing is pretty cool. The direct translations would have been handy starting out, may not have learned to understand everything if I had it though. Double edged sword I guess. Suzu muses to the new friend in her arms, getting carry time in while she can.

<You're thinking out loud you know.>

"Musing is generally done out loud. That way those around might comment on the musings."

<You're a weird one you know that? Doing this at your age.>

"Maybe so, but we're partners now. I'm sure we'll be close friends soon enough. Besides, what's my age have to do with this? It just means I have all kinds of friends for you to meet back in Unova."

The conversation continues on without really getting anywhere as the pair continue down the path toward Ashmere Village...

He was simply crawling on the forest floor, minding his own business at the time. A simple Caterpie's life was to crawl around in the forest, slowly grow up the levels of Pokemon growth, and evolve into its final form, a Butterfree. This Caterpie, on the other hand, had no intentions or aspirations. No intention of evolving into the Butterfree form. He just wanted to be left alone, without the harsh pressures of life or the insane pain of battling. No, he had to call his own shots for now. But how did he long for a trainer like his friends.

He slowly crawled out of the bushes, proceeding onto a dirt road. To some, this might have been an easy feat, simple to cross for most bigger Pokemon of the forest. For Caterpie, this was not the case. He had to keep crawling faster and faster, because he knew if anyone started to come down this road, he might be stepped all over. He didn't want to be squashed by someone! His speed increased as he tried to cross the dirt road.

Suddenly, his body froze up as she heard footsteps off her left side. When his gaze flowed to his left, he saw that there was a human and her Pokemon were walking down the dirt road of Route One. Had they just started their journey? Did she already have a Caterpie? Oh, so many questions!

"This is all because I haven't given you a nickname yet isn't it? Like I said before, I'm terrible at naming thi- Oh look a Caterpie." Suzu kneels down about a foot away, making no attempts to stop it from scurrying away.

<What do you mean oh look? It's just a Caterpie. They're everywhere.>

"Maybe, but they're pretty rare back home. A Sewaddle became quite the force once fully evolved. No idea about how Caterpies fair though." She sets Ralts down for the first time since getting her new friend then shifts to a sitting position. Not really worried about blocking the path because, seriously who's up at the crack of dawn? Besides jet lagged foreigners anyway...

The Caterpie stares at the Trainer... He had always admired Trainers and their Pokemon. The were awesome, so strong and powerful... Some of his friends had been captured by Trainers. With a trainer, the rush and race to survive was replaced by love, affection, and thrill of adventure.

Oh boy... a trainer~ Oh gosh, I hope they don't step on me. Do they see me? Do they want to catch me? Were the thoughts that filled the Caterpie's mind.

He saw that she had... was that a Ralts? Yeah, it was a Ralts. A Psychic type... Bugs didn't really get Psychic types, nor why some other types were so affected by them. The Caterpie starts to scurry away again, but feels the female trainer staring at him... he turns back to her and stares back... He spits out a little patch of String Shot, in case she tries to step on him, she'll get stuck... Unless she steps over the patch? Or around it?

Quick Ball sure would be handy about now... or a Net Ball. Nest ball would probably work too considering that it's still just a Caterpie... Are the thoughts crossing her mind as she stares down the Caterpie. Though it's not much of a stare down as she rather quickly blinks, losing any contest that may have been happening.

There is a tense moment of silence as she stands back up after the string shot impotently lands not on her Ralts before her, or even herself but in a patch between them. "The first move has been made..." she utters calmly, right hand slipping into one of her coats many pockets. "LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN!" She points forward dramatically, almost as if striking a pose, but she's probably just tired.

Meanwhile Ralts just assumes a ready stance, probably full of shame at her trainer's action.

Oh god, she's yelling! Don't hurt me! Was what ran through the Caterpie's mind as he saw the Trainer point and yell at him, then the Ralts across from him in a light fighting stance... "A-a battle? R-right!"

The Caterpie got up from quivering in fear, looking down to relief that he didn't wet himself... He looks at the Psychic-type and shows off his head-crest, flaring it out as he's ready to... oh shit, to fight.

The Caterpie lets out a blast of String Shot at the Ralts, making his best effort to coat the little green child-like Pokemon in jets of stringy white silk... Hopefully, he'd be able escape the Pokemon and its Trainer while they were slowed, if the battle went badly.

[Something wrong with my text color?]

Suzu pulls her hand out of the pocket with an empty pokeball at the ready. "That's right. A battle. Though there is the option of just coming along quietly by getting caught without anyone actually getting hurt." She casually tosses the ball to land softly by Caterpie's side. "Otherwise we can do things the action packed way. Starting with Ralts here hitting you with Shadow Sneak."

In response to the casual command, Ratls' shadow begins to shift and stretch out. Slowly making it's way toward Caterpie, giving time for deliberation before the attack would actually hit.

((The color looks funny against the background, kinda hurts my eyes)

The Caterpie flinched, getting hit by the Shadow Sneak attack, getting knocked to the ground and letting out a strange screeching noise. The bug Pokemon stood up, breathing lightly at being attacked... He looked at the Ralts, and began to charge at it, slamming its body into the child-like Pokemon for a firm tackle.

"That hurt!" The Caterpie shouted, lightly angry at the Psychic-type Pokemon.

[I know that feeling well. Temp color it is.]

Ralts gets knocked clear off her feet by the impact. Then makes use of psychic power to both right herself and retaliate with confusion. "You could have just got in the ball! It's still right there!" The ball is in fact still resting right there, primed and ready should a quick resolution be sought.

Suzu meanwhile inspects another while muttering things about specialty balls and her current lack of access to various moves that make capturing Pokemon easier.

1: Caterpie resists being captured, still mad.
2-3: Caterpie takes the hint, and pops into the Pokeball willingly.

The Caterpie thought over his options, looking at the Pokeball after being hit with a Confusion wave... he figured that he'd be better off being caught by a Trainer... something which almost certainly meant food everyday; a warm place to sleep; and kind, friendly companionship in the Trainer and other Pokemon.

"Alright... I'll go with you~ The Caterpie said in his Poke-speak, bumping the ball with his snout and being sucked in, not resisting the capture, resulting in the ball giving a single jiggle, and then locking instantly.

Suzu was honestly surprised that worked as she walks over to retrieve the ball. "If only they were all this easy eh? Bonus plus side, you're both in pretty much unharmed. Which is nice considering that I never did manage find the center back in the city." She makes a mental note to save trying to nickname it until after she's solved the first dilemma of naming her Ralts. After stowing the ball in one of her many coat pockets Suzu picks Ralts right back and places Ralts on her head. Then continues down the bath in the morning's first light.

Ralts can only hope Suzu gets tired of this behavior eventually as it's a long way down, relatively speaking.

After successfully capturing her latest team member, Suzu continued on down the beaten trail, following after almost a half-decade's worth of new trainers starting their own journeys, as well as the old trade path it was decades ago.

As she and her Ralts continued down the path, it would be noticeable that there was a faint odor in the air... and as she continued walking down it, it got stronger. It was a strange, pungent, musky odor... slightly sulfuric, like rotten eggs. Finally, it had gotten strong enough that many of the Pokemon in the area had left to a safe distance away... it seemed that something was making a big stink.

"Stunky... Stunk~" was the sound that could be heard nearby... across to the left side of the trail was a Skunk Pokemon, that seemed to have sprayed one of the trees in the area in an attempt to establish a hunting territory for itself, and to mark its home in the burrow under the tree. It turned and saw Suzu near its home and it growled lightly, turning and lifting its tail as a warning... "Stunky!"

It moved over on the path, and stood blocking the way. It seemed content to make sure no one made past it... so it would seem that Suzu would have to find a way around, or battle it to get to Ashmere.

Thought it was okay that Suzu could understand Pokemon thanks to her previous experience? She talked to that Caterpie after all.

Also of note, I has a person have gotten a whiff of skunk. It's a damn effective threat to anyone that's smelt it before.

Susu is fairly off put by the mounting stench, but lived in a city Garbodor nested outside of, and even made use of one during her travels in Unova so it's not hitting her as bad as it could be. Though it doesn't stop her from pulling out a handkerchief to breathe through in an attempt to stifle it somewhat.

A eureka moment occurs to her while attempting to set up a similar thing for Ralts only to get interrupted.
<Just put me in the ball!>
While a little bummed by the demand Suzu does as requested. Presumably doesn't smell like rotting garbage in there so it's probably much more pleasant at the moment. Though she does make a note to carry out that idea later.

Continuing on 'alone' she keeps her distance from the Stunky once it comes into view. Last thing she wants it for her good comfortable admittedly kind of raggedy coat to wind up getting blasted. Much less the rest of her.

"Well this is an unpleasant situation. A Trubbish would have been one thing. But this..." After a bit of thought Suzu back tracks a bit to try and go around the Stunky without aggravating it, having decided she just doesn't have anything that could realistically take on a dark type at the moment. Which saddens her a little as she rather likes the dark and poison types so getting them both in a single, if foul smelling, package would have been rather nice.
