Ranger Rules of the Road!

Stiles wasn’t five minutes away from attaining his new Turtwig (lovingly named Bastion) before his watch lit up like a firework. The neon green writing was sending him a brief message from Benji, whose only words were “Check your PC - Benji,” going around the watch like a news ticker. Eager to see what all the fuss was about, he pulled a one-eighty and marched back into the strangely clean office building, bypassing the guy at the counter, who probably thought him totally odd by now. He went straight to a PC in the corner of the room, and the first thing he noticed was a new piece of mail, flashing like one of those light-up “Open” signs. Unsurprisingly, it was from Benji.

Dear Munchkin…I mean Pokemon Trainer Stiles:
So, we heard through the grapevine that you aced your Trainer Test! Told you it’d go smoothly! Well, I pulled every string I have, and the Rangers agreed to send you this totally top rare pokemon! It’s a Shelmet, but don’t let looks deceive you. She is descended from The Champion’s own personal stock! Her name is Guinviere, and she’s kind of picky about her battles. But if you get her to start fighting, rumor has it that she knows Silver Wind. No confirmation, because she finds Ranging pretty boring, but maybe you’ll have better luck, yea? Anyways, we all are totally rooting for you, and can’t wait for you to challenge Lynwood’s gym. We know you’ll do us super proud, little guy!
- The One and Only Benji

P.S. Also sending you a sweet egg we found in the forest today. No clue what’s inside. Have fun with it!

Having grown up among the rangers, it was a big deal that they entrusted him with a pokemon from The Champion of Prydein. His bug pokemon were beyond powerful, so this Shelmet, this Guinivere, had to be of the same caliber. Untrained and stubborn, he was sure she’d make a great addition to his little crew. He hurriedly backed out through menus and folders, tapping his PC until he found the button to transport the new pokemon over to his roster. In a bright blast of white light, the pokeball formed. Feeling a bit awed, he looked up sheepishly at the guy behind the counter. ”Okay, that is magic.”

Packing his new pokeball onto his fashionably askew belts (now one rested comfortably on each hip), Stiles was more than excited to get going. A trainer for all of twenty minutes and he was already sporting a second pokemon (and an egg, but that didn’t really count)! That had to be a record somewhere! Regardless, his enthusiasm overtook him and he ran out of the room towards his destiny.

Cheesy exits aside, his first steps onto Route 1 were pretty uneventful. The trees made a great little reef of shade to walk in though. Try as he might, Stiles couldn’t help but wander off the beaten trail. Rule Number 1: The best things in this world are found by exploring the unknown! Stiles uttered the rule in his best impersonation of Benji, a guy trying too hard to act cool with a much deeper voice than himself. Benji’s “Ranger Rules” were generally useful, and Stiles had to admit probably led to a lot more awesome adventures that just walking on the road. Stiles tried to make sure he didn’t lose track of the paved section, though. The world was a pretty big place, and it would be just his luck to get lost on Route 1 for the rest of his life.

”Now what was something fun to do with pokemon?” The kid pondered aloud. Not like anybody was nearby to hear him or make fun of him. Then he remembered another Ranger Rule. Ranger Rule Number 5: Taking time to pick Berries is berry important if you want to survive! Well I couldn’t agree more. Come on out Bastion! You too Gwenn!”

Two overly dramatic tosses later, both of the grass-oriented pokemon appeared for the first time in front of their trainers. The two seemed utterly opposite of one another, with Guinivere looking cooly disinterested with everything around her. Bastion on the other had was far younger, and was running from side to side, chirping off ”Twig! Twig! Twig!” with every few steps. Stiles smiled a bit at the energy that one had. They ventured off into the forest long enough for Stiles to find a small bushel of bright blue berries. He grabbed two of them and stuffed them away in a small berry pouch he had found in his starter kit.

As Stiles was walking along the path, the sound of small pawsteps rushing hrough the grass, quickly followed by heavier human steps. A Poochyena ran past Stiles and his Pokemon, quickly followed by a 12 year old Pokemon Trainer with a Pokeball in his hand. The slightly chubby boy threw the Pokeball, striking the Pokemon on the hind leg; the spherical, red and white capsule turning the Pokemon into a red beam of light, and absorbing it... the ball wriggled and bounced lightly. It finally locked with a clicking sound, the boy running up to it and smiling. He turned and saw Stiles on the path along with him, with his Pokemon out.

"Hey! You! You're a trainer!" The Pokemon trainer shouted, pointing at the male Trainer with his Turtwig. "My name's Derrick... You're a new trainer too? Let's have a battle to test our new partners out~"

The trainer reached down to his keychain, to which were attached a few pokeballs. He pulled one off, and brought it to full size in his hand. He hurled the capsule, releasing the occupant inside to stand in front of him.

"Sandshrew~ Sand~" Was the creature's response when it saw the opposing Trainer, the little Sandshrew waved lightly, then brought up his claws to ready a fighting stance.

"Oh! What's your name, by the way? You're not an outlander, are yeh?" The boy asked, looking at Stiles and gauging his looks and clothes. "Hmm.. You look like you're Deiran."

Stiles had just tucked away the berries when the Poochyena went racing past. Moments later, the ball whizzed through the air, and the boy went into full terror alert mode. He dropped into a half-crouch, arms spread like an earthquake was starting. Thankfully it wasn’t a real emergency. Beginning your pokemon adventure by bawling like a baby or screaming “I don’t wanna die!” really kind of puts a damper on your prospective future. Luckily, the little kid burst through the bushes soon after, collecting the pokeball, which had stopped resisting.

”Hey, you caught it! I mean, it was trying to get away, but you nailed that thing!” Stiles was surprised at how not-horrible that sounded. Usually he managed to insert his foot into his mouth on an extremely consistent basis. It was pretty much a super power at this point. He decided not to question good luck.

Turtwig seemed overly excited about the boy. He ran up, shouting “TurTurTurTurtwig,” until he was close to enough to walk around him in circles like a tiny dog, almost sniffing at the boy. He seemed to grow very excited when the boy mentioned battling.

Wait what?

”Whoa whoa whoa! I mean, a battle? Isn’t that a bit childish? I mean, make our pokemon fight. Overrated! We could um, go hiking or something or not this.” Stiles began to physically backpedal to accommodate his words. Until he planted his ass firmly on the ground, his irritated Shelmet tangled in his lanky, uncoordinated legs. And then all was right with the world, and Stiles was a goofball again.

Shelmet, now trampled under her own trainer, seemed put off at the idea of battling. She scuttled away under the boughs of a tree, closing her eyes and relaxing, as if this was no concern of hers. Turtwig, however, decided that Stiles’ opinion wasn’t important. Like a perfect guard dog, he stood on all fours in front of his misshapen master, eyes narrowed in concentration. ”Turtwig Twig!”

”No! Turtwig! As your master trainer pokemon leader guy I say no battle!”

”Turtwig?” It wasn’t a question as much as a poisonous look. Turtwig took a step towards the boy and his Sandshrew. Wait a minute, Sandshrew…ground type! Turtwig was a grass pokemon. He could win! Stiles, seeing perhaps a future where his face wasn’t stomp into the ground, lifted himself up and dusted the leaves from his shirt.

”Well okay then! You’re on! I’m Stiles. This is Turtwig. And he really wants to fight. So go get ‘em little buddy!” His first victory would be awesome! And a breeze. Maybe pokemon training was easier than it looked…

"Battles aren't childish." Derrick protested the Deiran's initial objections to the sport. "It's a test of a Trainer and his Pokemon, pushing them both to become stronger and closer."

The Sandshrew nodded, clawing at the ground idly for a moment, and then facing off against the Turtwig. It was a Grass-Type, so he had to be worried for now... but low-level Pokemon like this didn't usually have their same-type attacks, so it was more evenly matched.

"Since I was the one who challenged you... you can get the first move!" Derrick said to Stiles, being courteous to his fellow trainer, and watching carefully what will happen.

Turtwig seemed to understand people just fine, despite his inability to speak. It seemed unfair to the blonde kid raising him. As soon as the Sandshrew squared up, he braced for impact, but then the kid told him to go first. He wasted little time. Like a small rocket, and he blitzed forward across the grassy terrain, jumping up at the last moment to launch his first real move in battle, a leaping Tackle. It wasn’t particularly inventive, nor was it the best tackle ever. But it was straightforward, powerful, and left Stiles saying, ”Yea! I totally wanted you to do just that! Go. Or something.”

Even Gwenn got into the game. She didn’t come right out and start cheering, but one of her closed eyes started to creep open. Apparently it was time to scope out her teammate. She had to know if this chump was worthy of working with. After all, she was royalty.

Turtwig would keep up the assault, tackling like a charging bull each time the other pokemon dodged. It was a terrible tactic that would wear him out, but right now all he cared about was rushing forward yelling ”Twiiiiiig!”

After the Turtwig missed the first couple of Tackles, it seemed to hit it's stride... Luckily, Derrick and his Sandshrew were prepared already. After each missed Tackle, the Sandshrew had been contracting its muscles tight, curling up into a Defense Curl to better protect itself. As the Turtwig came in for the Tackle, the Ground-Type Pokemon curled up once more, holding his scales and skin taut, absorbing the blow from the Turtwig, and getting up as if it were nothing.

"Now, Sand Attack!" Derrick called out to his Pokemon. The Sandshrew hurled a slew of dust into the face of the Grass Type. The Ground-type Pokemon stood his ground now, readying his attacks to be called next. "When he gets close enough, get him with a Poison Sting!" Derrick called out, the young trainer obviously enthusiastic about Pokemon battles.

”Oh man oh Man oh man we suck. We are so going to lose! Turtwig doesn’t know what he’s doing, I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m getting schooled by a kindergartener…today marks a great and horrible failure of one Joseph Stilinski.” Now it was serious. Anytime Stiles referred to himself as Joseph Stilinski, it meant something was dangerously out of whack. Turtwig was rushing around like a tiny bull, being goaded into an attack that did absolutely nothing. At least the little turtle had the sense to back away when the giant ball of dust hit its face. It gave the trainer a moment to think. ”Turtwig, use Grass Moves!” He yelled desperately, imitating his opponent.

Turtwig stopped, looking back at Stiles with a massive portrait of confusion. ”Twiiiig.” It whined at him, sounding utterly pitiful.

”A grass move’ll end it. Use uh…solarbeam! Razor Leaf! Dancing Vines! That’s a move, right?” Stiles’ performance was piss poor, and his unfortunate attraction of Turtwig’s attention sent it tumbling to the ground, too absorbed in being told to do something it couldn’t to avoid the Poison Sting.

The entire time, Guinivere’s single eye remained open, watching with cool disinterest the fight being displayed before her like royal sport. She was ready to go bac to sleep when Turtwig started climbing back to his feet. It was kind of heroic, knowing he’d lose. ”Shelmet.” She said to the grass-type turtle. It was just a single, solitary word of advice. If only Stiles could speak pokemon.

But Turtwig could.

The leaf on top of its head split, two thin vines extending on either side of its head. The vines shot forward like some absolutely fantastic grass-type attack. Only they weren’t aiming to hit. Just tickle. The leaves on the end of the vines were soft and bendable, and the Turtwig began to try and loosen up his poor opponent with a series of humorous tickle-attacks.

”Uh…yea? Tickle Attack go?”

”Shel-met.” the bug type said in agreement before closing both eyes again.

”Yea! Tickle Attack! Goooo!”

The change in tactics from the Turtwig caught Derrick and his Sandshrew off-guard. The Ground-type Pokemon curled up into a ball, giggling lightly from being tickled, then curling back up into another Defense Curl, hardening his outer hide against the ticklish assault. Once it was over, another Sand-Attack is hurled into the Turtwig's face.

The Sandshrew managed to avoid the next Tickle that got sent his way, rolling over to the side and striking Turtwig with another Poison Sting, this one making a perfect connection. There was a twinge of purple on Turtwig's body where it hit, slowly spreading out in veinlike marks... Turtwig had been poisoned.

"Great job, Sandshrew..." Derrick called out to his Pokemon, grinning as it seemed the battle was in his hands.

Purple veiny pokemon. Not good. It took Stiles a minute to realize what exactly was happening. The first attack had just taken Turtwig off guard. He had tumbled to the ground and gotten up with little to no problem. Now the strange substance coursing through his veins had him looking awfully sad, and just a bit drunk. He scuttled backwards from Sandshrew, looking hurt and confused. He looked to Stiles, as if expecting some kind of help. The blonde kid had no idea what to do. Meanwhile the purple goo just started to crawl across his body, pumping like blood through veins. If the little kid hadn’t yelled the attack name out previously, he wouldn’t know what it was at all.

Poison.

”Come on buddy! We got this! You’ll just have to push through and beat him real quick! I mean, we aren’t doing so good at even hitting him or anything, but I know we can take him! And faster than ever! Yea!” He tried to be supportive, but Turtwig just looked so sad. And pained. ”I am seriously the worst trainer in the world. Terrible. Absolutely. How did I ever pass that test? Didn’t it teach me something about Poison?” Stiles racked his brain as Turtwig Withdrew into his shell, hoping to die in peace or something.

Eventually, like an amnesiac remembering their life, the answer came to him. ”Duh, Stilinski! Ranger Rule Number 4! A Ranger is only as good as his preparations! The boy bug into his pouches until he produced the sparkling yellow bottle. He rushed out towards Turtwig, shouting “Time out Time out!” as fast as he could. Eventually, he coaxed the turtle out of his shell long enough to jam a little needle into Turtwig’s leg, pushing the antidote into his system. Moments later, the veining was gone, and Turtwig looked steadier on his feet.

Stiles got clear of the field. ”Time in!” He shouted as Turtwig charged forward with a newly energized Tackle.

"Finish it with a Scratch!" Derrick called out for the finishing attack of the round. It took a moment for Turtwig to be back to normal after injected with the Antidote, and anyone knew that a Trainer who used an item in battle used that turn on the item's usage. The Sandshrew rushed up to the Grass-type Pokemon, and using its sharp claws, cut a sharp groove in the Turtwig's soft shell, leaving a nasty-looking scratch mark and causing the Turtwig to go down. "Great job, Sandshrew~ Come back now!"

Derrick looked proudly at his Pokemon, the Sandshrew looking down over the Turtwig, about to attack it again, but returning to his Trainer's side once he was told to come back. The Sandshrew could get a little overeager in battles, sometimes actually hurting the other Pokemon too much.

"You're definitely a rookie." Derrick said to Stiles, tisking slightly and looking disappointed. "You need to brush up on how to battle, as well as your Pokemon's strengths and weaknesses. Your Turtwig could've won, if you'd known how to use it. "Your Turtwig's lost the battle. But, we've both got other Pokemon. How about one more?"

”But Turtwig…worked so hard…” Stiles sighed, absolutely crestfallen. ”When pokemon work hard they’re supposed to win right?” The blonde-haired idiot pulled out a little pokeball, sending Turtwig away for a recuperative nap. All his hard work would not be for nothing. If Gwenn would cooperate, that is. ”Another battle? I’m up for it, but my Shelmet is a little…well she kind of doesn’t like to…”

”Shelmet.” The coolly dissatisfied voice range out as one of Shelmet’s hidden vine pushed into Stiles’ chest, causing him to take a step back. But the intention was clear. She intended to fight. It withdrew into the shadows of her shell shortly after she made her way to her “trainers” side.

”Well well,” Stiles muttered, a little surprised. ”Looks like somebody cares about Turtwig too. If she’s game, I’m game. Be warned, though. She’s totally the brains of this operation. You’re gonna lose.” And with that he placed his skinny butt on a stump, seeming to relax and being content with watching Gwenn tear the next challenger apart.

"Alright then. I'm ready if you are! Return, Sandshrew." The lightly pudgy boy trainer returned his Pokemon to its capsule, grabbing another and tossing the ball into the air this time. As it opened, a white light appeared and out came a small fuzzball with wings. It started flapping, looking out at the area, calling out its name.

"Wooo~BAT!" The Pokemon cried out. A Psychic/Flying Pokemon, Woobat flapped about, it's eyes appearing closed. The pink nose it had had a heart-shaped marking on it, and it swooped down, getting a bearing of its surroundings and readying itself for battle.

"I'm gonna go first this time... Woobat! Confusion!" Derrick called out to his Pokemon, which released a wave of psychic energy at the Shelmet, basically enhancing its own brainwaves in an attempt to confuse and hinder the enemy Pokemon... though the effect didn't seem to have it's full power on the Bug-type.

Being hatched aroun d some of the strongest pokemon on the planet tended to give you some idea of how they fight. This Woobat creature was no threat. It was far from worth that move. Instead, the Shelmet merely snapped shut it shell, the waves of energy glancing off with very little actual damage. Why the Turtwig wasn’t smart enough to do that, she didn’t know. But Gwenn did take the time to stare at her trainer for a moment.

”Got a shell, use it…message received. Now hit him!” It was about as useless of a command as he gave to Turtwig, but nobody gave him a pokemon encyclopedia or anything that would tell him what moves his pokemon could do. Was he supposed to magically know them? Because if all trainers had that power and he didn’t know, he was going to complain to somebody. The Pokemon God or whatever there was! Luckily, Shelmet agreed with his instruction.

The little bug pushed off the ground with the nub-like feet attached to the shell. It wasn’t a very high jump, but it gave the pokemon room to rotate its body, purple gunk flying from its snout in a graceful arc. Hopefully, the widespread liquid would help negate its opponent’s ability to fly. Mobility wasn’t Shelmet’s strongest point. Stiles, however, couldn’t help notice that some of it hit a tree…which was now smoking.

Acid!? You spit Acid!? Holy crap that’s awesome! “ That made it two moves he knew that Gwenn could use. The other one, Silver Wind. Benji had warned him that she refused to use it. He intended to change that. After all, he WAS her trainer, and she should listen to him, right?

"Oh crap! This one knows what she's doing." Derrick swore lightly as the Acid hit the wing of his Woobat. She shook off the injury, though her speed was slightly diminished and she was slightly injured, she continued on. Another Confusion was sent at the Shelmet, who repeated her tactic of shelling up and riding it out...

"Woobat, try and wait until she comes out of the shell... then hit her!" Derrick yelled out at his Pokemon, in a little bit of a pickle, since his Woobat didn't know any Flying-Type moves yet.

”Well, can’t say I didn’t expect that to work.” Stiles was pleased with the acidic performance, but the fight was long from over. But he could speed the process along. Shelmet would continue this tactic, shutting up and then launching assaults of acid. But she was better than that. ”Guinivere. I know you can use a better move than that. Show them your Silver Wind!” The call was dramatic. Had it been a tv show, a ridiculously tight-framed shot would’ve zoomed in on his face, and the music would’ve paused for effect.

But nothing happened. ”Shel-met.” The word was biting and sharp. The pokemon refused to use such a move on this caliber of pokemon. She could topple the Woobat using her duck and chuck method. He’d go out after some time, and she’d be all the better for it. Silver Wind was only for enemies who deserved it. She would’ve happily opened it up on that Sandshrew. He hurt the Turtwig, who was no more than a baby. This second pokemon had neither her anger nor her respect.

Unfortunately, arguing with your trainer takes time, and a confusion (appropriately timed) ploughed into the Shelmet, who was too busy to shut up like before. The little bug bounced backwards a bit before stopping, thoroughly pissed. Two vines leapt out from the confines of the shell. Each sought to take hold of a wing, for hundreds of nearly microscopic barbs were seeking to latch on and steal the sweet sweet energy from the flying foe.

”So, Acid and Scary Spiky Tendrils. But not Silver Wind. Suuure. Thanks Gwenn.”
