"Perfect.. I know it hurts, Woobat. But fly up, take off with her and use another Confusion!" The Trainer called out to his Psychic-Flying Bat Pokemon as the Leech Life hit. The Pokemon shrieked in agreement, flying up in the air and bringing the Shelmet with her "That's it, keep it up!"

"WooooooBAT!" The Pokemon cried out, pushing through the tendrils striking her and sucking her energy, wanting to show the stuck-up Pokemon who she was messing with. Now that the tendrils were out, she couldn't go back into her shell, and the Woobat focused her mind and sent out her strongest pulse of Confusion.

"Drop her!" The pudgy boy cried out, the Woobat diving and twirling in mid-air, causing the barbs to come loose and the Shelmet to loose her grip as it fell to the ground.

Chumps are chumps. The Leech Life nailed the poor little bird-bat-pig combo and Gwenn felt the pains she had suffered easing. But then the damn thing started flying. For that feat, Gwenn had to give it props. Lifting a steel-encased bug on wings designed more for glicing than straight up flight was rather impressive, and totally unexpected.

But only her trainer saw where it was going. That’s the benefit of being outside of the battle. He could see the chain of events, leading to a second loss. So he got up from his stump, and tried to shout to his still rising Shelmet. ”Gwenn it’s a trap!”

Guinivere only understood that she was gorging on health. She’d be back at full strength before long, and even Stiles’ stupid error wouldn’t matter. Victory was hers. Until one vines slipped, and then the other. She was falling.

”You know what to do. Now use it!” This was perhaps the most confrontational sentence Stiles had ever spoken. He rarely commanded anything, especially if he knew it was unwanted. But otherwise they’d lose. And that smug son of a bitch across the battlefield did not deserve to win again.

The plummeting Shelmet took a deep breath, snapping the shell shut as started falling. The curves etched into her surface began to glow. ”Shell!” The word rang out, echoing because the visor on her shell was closed. The steel shape kept plummeting until she shouted again, the visor snapping open. ”Shelmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!”

What happened next was almost an explosion. The initial “Shell” was like a massive intake of breath. The force of the air rocketing out of her tiny body was literally that. The pokemon spun the air, exhaling a shining wind that ripped about in circles, little concentric waves that spread as far as they could. For Shelmet, the force of the wind slowed her, causing her to land with only a slightly savage thunk against the ground, instead of one that might’ve rendered her unconscious.

The etched swirls on her shell began to fade after the attack, until they were hardly visible at all. But Guinivere turned about to face her opponent, looking as regal as ever. ”Shelmet, met.”

The Woobat fell to the ground with a soft 'oomph'. It was knocked out, leaving the Shelmet the victor of the battle. Derrick called back his Pokemon, returning the Heart-nosed Bat Pokemon to its capsule.

"Good work... Your Pokemon did most of the work, though. Learn how to battle, and how to manage your Pokemon. That's your job as a Trainer, get them to listen to you, and help them grow. You can't do that if they're making all the decisions for you."

Derrick walked over to Stiles, sniffling once and offering his hand to the other Trainer. "Work hard, and get your Pokemon in good shape. If we meet again on the road, I want a rematch to break this draw."

[Apparently, I never posted this. It's been sitting on my open word document for a week, waiting to go up. So here it is!]

”We..won?” Stiles was slightly speechless. Gwenn was on the ground, breathing deeply but otherwise not moving. The spirals on her shell, which until now had gone unnoticed as little swirling scratches, now looked pronounced, their glowing fading. She looked beautiful. He smiled as he looked up at the pokemon. He picked it up in a hug before pulling out its pokeball. ”That was fantastic work. I knew you’d win if we used it. Benji told me what you are capable of.”

The Shelmet looked up, with a strange mix of emotion tumbling off of her. There was disappointment. She was upset that she needed that move to win. She thought she was better than that. But also their was pride. She had done something that Shelmet couldn’t do. She had also shown off her brains and power. She was the undisputed winner. And there was a tiny bit of affection. She was the tiniest bit glad to have done it for him, he realized. It brought an unwarranted smile to his lips. ”You don’t have to say anything. Rest now.” And she was gone in a flash of red light.

Then he addressed his opponent. ”It was a marvelous fight. My first, actually. I learned a whole lot. Next time we meet, I’ll bring three pokemon. Then that Poochyena of yours can join the fun, yea?” He was excited to test himself against the same trainer twice. It’d be like a measuring stick of his ability.

Like usually, however, he forgot a sentence until the kid had nearly walked off. ”Hey wait! How did you know what moves your pokemon could do? Nobody gave me an instruction manual or anything. I just kind of winged it.” His face looked absolutely pathetic.

"Get to know your Pokemon. Learn their strengths, weaknesses, and talk with them..." Derrick said to his opponent. "You need to know what they can do, and they need to be able to trust you to know what you're doing. As a trainer, it's your job to have a plan, know what to use and when. Your Pokemon are part of a team with you, and you're the leader. You have to guide them properly."

Derrick shakes Stiles' hand, smiling at the odd-duck of a trainer. "Sure, why not... Just keep your eyes open for me~ I'm sure you'll see me again."

Derrick pats Stiles on the shoulder, and waves off. He walks away and continues to look through the woods for more Pokemon.

Stiles continues on now, able to take his Pokemon closer to the next destination on their journey... Will he take the time to treat his Turtwig's wounds, or will his inexperience cause him to leave his Pokemon untreated?

”But pokemon can’t talk! How will they tell me their moves!?” Stiles screamed after the kid, but it was hopeless. The boy had gone beyond his range to hear, and Stiles was swallowed up in the foliage all alone again. He barely remembered what he was supposed to do, let alone what he had been doing previously. It wasn’t until he spotted a familiar bush that he remembered to do a good number of things.

”Oh! Turtwig!” He exclaimed, pulling one of the Oran Berries off the bush he just found. The poor pokemon that erupted from the pokeball looked ill. It was collapsed on the ground, all scuffed up. ”Oran Berries make great coats, and also can help a pokemon recover. This should help tide you over until we reach the next town, okay?” What he lacked in battle skills, he made up for in his survival knowledge. That was what the rangers were all about, after all. Berries were of no consequence to him. He knew them inside and out. He pocketed one more, just in case they ran into more trouble on the road.

After eating, Turtwig did look better. He stumbled about for a bit, and seemed depleted of some of his energy. But at least he wasn’t collapsing and looking next to dead anymore. So the fledgling trainer scooped up the turtle and just carried him for a bit as they walked. Guinivere could rest a bit more. She wasn’t as young, nor were her wounds as severe. ”That boy said I had to talk to you. You don’t say anything but your name, though, do you?”

”Turtwig.” He said swiftly in agreement.

”Oh this is gonna be fun…” He exhaled.

The new Trainer and his Pokemon continued on their journey... Stiles was obviously a little frustrated by not being able to understand his own Pokemon. Some trainers, like Derrick, had grown up with Pokemon, and knew how to understand the gist of what they were saying, or at least the emotion behind it. After a while, trainers grew a close bond, and were able to understand their Pokemon's speech like their native tongue.. Others, like Derrick, took a little longer to grasp it.

While the Trainer was figuring out what to do about learning to communicate with his Pokemon, there was a rustling in the brush, and some light sounds of movement around. As the day was getting on, more Pokemon were becoming more active.

Such as was the case with a small group of Pokemon on the road. A pair of Shinx, as well as a Poochyena, were digging around, having found and cornered a rather small caterpie. They pounced at it, quickly dispatching the bug and starting to dig in, the three of them happily chewing. The two Shinx looked to be one of each gender, and the Poochyena looked to be female as well.

Stiles froze. Not out of fear or anything, because these pokemon looked, well, cute. He didn’t wanna disturb them from their play and their meal. It seemed wrong to do so. He was content to watch them just pal around for a bit, surprised that two different species were getting along so well.

Turtwig wasn’t as serene. ”Twig! Twig!” He chirped almost like a bird, wiggling free of his trainer’s arms and hopping to the ground. He did this odd hopping-running maneuver and approached the pokemon, still chirping his name like it was the greatest thing on the planet.

”So much for just gentle observation. Isn’t this how we got in trouble just like twenty minutes ago buddy?” Stiles was defeated, however. He didn’t have the heart to tell the baby pokemon that he couldn’t try and make new friends. So he just watched the mayhem to come…

The Poochyena turned, smelling the approaching Pokemon and took a good look at the Turtwig. That kind of Grass Type wasn't native to the area, and it didn't seem aggressive towards them...

Che-che.. Poochyena. Poochy. The Dark-type Pokemon notified her two companions. The male looked up, a mouthful of Caterpie flesh in his maw, which he wolfed up and looked at the Turtwig, letting out a little cry.

Shinx, shinx.. The male Shinx approached the Turtwig, sniffing up at him and looking at him funny. He sniffs at the Turtwig, and sniffles a bit, going back to his Caterpie and licking his paws. It seemed that they deemed him not a threat.

Turtwig seemed to take heart in the fact that nobody was attacking him. With an exuberant ”Twiiiig!” He lept onto the back of the poochyena in the weirdest imitation of a hug that could possibly be expressed.

”Bastion, quit it!” Stiles yelled, plucking his pokemon off the poor little girl trying to eat. ”You can’t just jump all over pokemon like that! These guys seem nice, but what if it was a mean one? You’d get super hurt that way. Wild pokemon aren’t like the one you just battled. They won’t stop if they want to hurt you. Okay?” He hated being rough with the little baby, but the tiny turtle had to learn not to just mess with pokemon he found eating in the wild.

Stiles grinned sheepishly at the trio before him, setting Turtwig back down and reaching out to pet one of the Shinx. ”How you guys doin? Getting a good meal, I see. Thanks for being nice to Turtwig. He’s kinda new at this.” The trainer decided to not mention that he was also new.

The three Pokemon acknowledged Turtwig and Stiles' existence and presence, continuing their meal. The female Shinx looked up at them cutely and smiled, letting out a little affirmation.

"Shiinx~ Shi-shinx" She said to Turtwig, her little tail wagging cutely as she continued to eat from the Caterpie... she even moved aside lightly, offering some to the Grass-Type Pokemon.. though, she wasn't sure if the Grass-Type would eat Bug meat.

The Poochyena barked something at the Female Shinx, obviously not liking sharing their food with a Trainer's Pokemon...

"Che-Che. Chyena! Cheee!Na!" Her tone sounded a little scolding, but not so much aggressive.

The male Shinx, however, just looked at the two girls and let out a little gruff sniff, returning to eating... and promptly keeping the girls from bickering.
The Poochyena looked at Turtwig and snorted at him, returning to her section of the meal. If the Female Shinx wants to share her part of the meal, that's fine.

The Turtwig was a bit confused. It didn’t want to eat a Caterpie. Grass types weren’t known for their carnivorous tendencies, unless you happened to be named Carnivine. So it politely shook its head and back away from the food, munching on a tiny patch of grass nearby so as to show that it enjoyed eating plants, not pokemon. ”Twig.”

Whilst the pokemon continued to eat the Caterpie (or their patch of grass), Stiles found himself increasingly confused. ”Hm. Now what? I found wild pokemon, but the textbooks made it sound like every single one would be trying to kill me. These guys just seem…cute.” Thoroughly confused, he turned to his one remaining pokeball. Hating to wake up his slumbering pokemon, he decided he’d let Gwenn sleep unless he had absolutely no idea what to do, or messed everything up so badly he had no hope of saving himself. Until then he’d just kind of wing it.

As the food began to dwindle, he cleared his throat with a coughing sound to get the pokemons’ collective attention. His speech was sincere, but it sounded more like he was wearing a restrictive corset and had issues breathing. It was slow and halting. ”As you all know, I’m a pokemon trainer. Uh, you guys are wild pokemon, and it seems like only normal that we battle, in an attempt to capture more pokemon. Now, I’m totally okay with not battling if you choose to simply join me, and I would hate to break up a little family like this, so I offer you all the chance to join me on my adventures. If any of you would like to battle, I’d be more than happy to do so. I’m sure Turtwig would relish the opportunity.”

Until then, Turtwig had just been silent. At the mention of battling, however, he perked right up, smiling as wide as he could. ”Turtwiig!” He nodded vigorously, looking to the Shinx who had been kind to him, as if encouraging her to join them.

As they ate vigorously, leaving the Caterpie not much left but the indigestibles and intestines... the Male Shinx stepped forward, his ears perked at the Trainer's challenge. He made a strange mewling sound, almost like he was laughing at Stiles' crazy challenge.

"Shiinx, shi-shi. Shinx-inx." It told Stiles, who obviously couldn't understand a lick of Poke-speak. It stood firmly before it, and looked at the Turtwig, wagging its tail and pawing at the ground, looking ready to fight after a nice meal.

The other two Pokemon, the females, simply sat on the ground and watched. The female Poochyena let out a bit of a howl, calling a few more Shinx and Poochyena to watch. These were obviously young members of a mixed-species pack... so it was interesting to see what was going to happen. Regardless... Stiles had a challenger.

”Little lion, I have no clue what you just said, but that’s a battle pose! Hop to it, Turtwig!” The wording was a little funny after Turtwig’s earlier affectionate jump-hug. The turtle either didn’t notice of didn’t care as it ran to stand in front of Stiles. It quickly went from some strange euphoric smiley-creature to a very serious Turtwig.

”Twig.” it uttered the single syllable, trying to deepen its voice. To the little pokemon, appearance was everything, and battles were tough places for tough pokemon who wanted to be tough. So he’s be the most tough.

”Now, according to that last battle we had, he gets the first move because we challenged him. But before then, I need to know what you can do. Tackle, of course. Tickle Attack worked. Hide in your shell seemed to be effective. Can you do anything else?” Stiles intended to go into this battle fully prepared.

”Twig Twig! Tuuuuuuuuurtwig!” The little pokemon made a big slamming motion, trying to tell his trainer that he could hit even harder than a tackle.

”Right. We’ll call that Super Big Tackle, okay?” Stiles didn’t know if you were allowed to use nicknames for attacks in real pokemon battles, but here it would suffice just fine. Turtwig nodded his agreement to the name and turned to face Shinx. Stiles was glad that there were more little pokemon. He didn’t want to be responsible for taking away their strongest member and leaving two little babies all alone. At least this way they’d still have friends. ”Uh, proper trainer etiquette says you get to go first. Bring it on, uh, Shinx!”

"ShiiiiNX!" The male Shinx started out his assault. It started rushing at the Turtwig, hitting him with a powerful Tackle. The Shinx was fast, and more than that, it was strong. That tackle had some force behind it. It bounded back out of attacking range of the Turtwig's mouth.

The other members of the Shinx' pack in the area cheered it on.. Already, the Turtwig was looking hurt, and it wouldn't take more than another one or two of those Tackles to knock it out. It must've still been hurt from a prior battle.
