Wherever I May Roam...

After buying whatever she could think of while keeping in mind that it had to not only fit in the backpack she was given, but also had to be light enough for her to carry, Zoe stepped out onto the street and glanced around with a heavy sigh. She wasn’t lazy and was of course in very good shape, but dang, she really hated walking. Checking on the pokeball in her pocket, she gently patted it and began her trek out of town. She really didn’t have a clue as to where she was supposed to go, but figured if she kept following this path, the next town would eventually come into view. Right? Oh man, what if she got lost? Shaking that thought out of her head, Starwind wiggled her nose and started singing a tune.

And the earth becomes my throne
I adapt to the unknown
Under wandering stars I've grown
By myself but not alone
I ask no one

And my ties are severed clean
Less I have the more I gain
Off the beaten path I reign

Roamer, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will

But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll never mind anywhere

Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home.

It wasn’t a jaunty song, but it sort of fit her trek. Adjusting the hat upon her head, she sighed heavily. Blinking, she stopped walking and dug through her pack again, pulling out a belt that was obviously for holding pokeballs. Sliding it on, she attached JuJuBean’s ball to it and patted it thoughtfully. She tried to remember how to release the Pichu, but nothing was coming to mind. Dang, she was a terrible trainer thus far. Kicking a rock, she let out a loud scream before sitting down on a boulder.

“I suck at this…”

There was a soft growling to one side of Zoe's perch and then a rustling in the grass. Another rustle came before a small gray Poochyena jumped out of the bushes and stared at Zoe, growling softly with its ears tucked back and its tail between its back legs. It seemed sleepy, as if Zoe's scream had awakened it from a nice nap.

Poking a bit more at the Pokeball, she wondered what others were doing at this moment. Were they having as much trouble as she was at this moment? No, they probably studied before deciding to be a trainer. Rubbing her forehead, she found herself thinking about her adopted parents and decided she didn’t want to let them down. Pulling out a few more empty balls to fill up the belt, she zipped the bag back up and slid it over her shoulders once again. It was still fairly sunny, so she kept her sunglasses and hat on for the moment since she didn’t particularly want to get burned. A rustling sound coming from the side caught her attention, but she brushed it off as being part of her overactive imagination.

“Alright, Zoe, think. You can do this, you just have to be confident at this like you’re confident about everything else in your life.”

Nodding to herself, she was about to jump off the boulder and continue her way when a very soft growl caught her attention. Blinking, she glanced off to the side and noticed the grass moving opposite of what the wind was blowing it. There was something most definitely in there that was for sure. Before she could do much of anything, a strange looking creature; almost like a dog made its way out of the bushes and was staring at her. It didn’t seem too happy with her, and she wondered if it had been slumbering before her inconsiderate scream.

“Oh, hi there, puppy. Did I wake you up? I’m super sorry.” Wait, was this a wild pokemon that she could capture? Oh, she almost bet it was, but unfortunately, she still couldn’t remember how to release her own pokemon, so instead she carefully climbed off the boulder and scooted towards the creature.

“Wanna get in my pokeball? I bet there’s a sauna in there and everything.”

The Poochyena stared at Zoe as if she were daft for a moment before the small canine sat down. It was a veteran of battles - many a trainer had failed to catch the crafty little creature - but this was a new tactic to the little guy.

The Poochyena stared at her as she inched closer for a few long steps before it gave a small 'Oof!' of a bark and crouched, clearly readying itself to be attacked.

Obvious confused crossed Zoe’s face as the animal didn’t really do much of anything before it finally sat down. Well, so much for just getting it to walk into the ball, if that was even possible. Scrunching up her nose, which seemed like a habit more than anything, she tilted her head a smidge to the side. What to do… what to do…? Her fingers flexed against her sides and she stopped moving once the strange pokemon barked at her and crouched down. Did that mean it was about to attack?

Think dummy, think.

Shrugging, she crouched as well and wiggled her butt. Maybe she could pounce on it and snuggle it until she subdued it? Would that work? Deciding that was what she was going to do, Zoe took off like a shot and leapt towards the pokemon, intending on landing not directly on it, but beside it so that she could cuddle it. It would work, right? In her books, it would most definitely be a successful attack. If not, she’d try something else, like somehow getting JuJu out of the ball.

“Commere, puppy!”

There was a sharp yelp and a growl and then a struggling, pissed off dog filled Zoe's arms. The Poochyena wiggled and squirmed and fought to try to get free of Zoe's arms. Its teeth snapped at the air but she had luckily found a hold that evaded its teeth. After a few moments, it went lax in hopes that she would relax her grip so that it could escape, barking at her in angry protest.

Somehow her haphazard attack worked and it wasn’t long before the pokemon’s furry body was snagged tight in her arms. Immediately recognizing the danger of sharp canines, Zoe shifted her body so that both her arms and face remained safe from the snapping jaws. It was obviously pissed off due to how much it was growling and barking, but she didn’t release her grasp at all. If she let go, it would run away and she would be a failure. She couldn’t fail! Not now and not ever! Struggling to keep it nestled in her arms, she rocked back and forth, trying to sing to it in order to calm it down.

“Shhh, puppy, shhh…”

When it went lax, she attempted to keep it tight in her arms while grasping one of her empty balls. Releasing it from the belt with a slight huff, she whapped the dog with the ball, growling in frustration when nothing worked as it was supposed to. Hissing, Zoe remembered what was said and went back to attacking the dog in order to weaken it enough to make the ball glow. This had to work!

The Poochyena yelped when Zoe whapped it with her pokeball and with one giant heave it jerked itself free of her arms and stood well away from her, glaring at her. It barked a few times, sounding quite insulted, and then it jumped at her, clearly intending to return the favor of being attacked by using tackle.

When the dog yoinked itself out of her arms, Zoe fell over with a slight grunt. Just that little bit of work left her exhausted and she couldn’t help but hit the ground with her fist. This was extremely frustrating, and the sixteen-year-old wasn’t sure what to do. Scrunching up her nose while ignoring its angry barks, she tried to think of another thing, and spotted a branch nearby. Before she could move to get the branch, she noted it jumping at her. Screaming, she grabbed her full pokeball and threw it up into the air, towards the canine.

“DAAAAAAH! JuJuBeans, help meeeeeeeeee!”

The pokeball lit up in the middle of the air, and she blinked as it opened and a creature jumped out of it, surrounded by lightning. Standing in the middle between her and the pokemon was her Pichu. He was absolutely adorable and had she not been in a dire situation, Zoe probably would have run over to him in order to snuggle. JuJuBeans looked back at her while waiting to be commanded what to do. She of course had no clue and waited to be pounced by the dogmonpokething.

The appearance of the Pichu had the good fortune (for Zoe) of diverting the Poochyena's attention from the teen to the other pokemon. It growled and continued its attack, diverting itself from Zoe to JuJuBeans with a snarling growl. JuJuBeans, of course, could understand the pokemon's growling speech.

I'm going to eat you for that! It crashed into the Pichu.

Zoe had no clue what to do and wondered if there was a manual or something she could have purchased in the store. No, the only thing she could do was stare in shock as the direction of the dog shifted from her to her precious JJB. Her pokemon of course knew exactly what was being said and glanced back at his trainer while waiting for a command. If she didn’t hurry, he was going to get pummeled.

“Pichu, piiichhhhhhhhhhu”

The young girl screamed as JuJuBeans was crashed into and she couldn’t help but run towards the two to make sure her new friend wasn’t hurt. On the way, she picked up a branch and gripped it tightly. Not even pausing in her pace, she slammed the branch hard into the dog’s side, screaming at it to get off ‘Beans. Pichu struggled beneath it, trying to get to Zoe’s side.

“Get off him, you mutt before I beat you with this stick s’more!”

There was a yip and a yelp and a snarl and the Poochyena bounded away from the Pichu and his trainer and growled at them both, howling angrily. It tucked its tail and stared with a new mistrust at this creature that would attack it while it was in battle. It backed away from Zoe slowly, clearly intending to run. It had had enough, and it didn't care to fight two creatures at once. That wasn't how this went.

ooc: Roll 1d6. 1 - 2 The Poochyena gets away, 3 - 4 It runs, but you have the opportunity to chase after it and continue the battle (It will take a minimum of 3 posts to catch it), 5 - 6 You can continue the battle and draw it back into the fight without chasing it.
