Once the canine lunged away from her pokemon, Zoe scooped it up in her arms, snuggling it tight. She started to go after it, but while she had been busy taking care of JuJuBeans, it escaped away from her. Scowling at her failure, she sat down and placed the Pichu in front of her. He didn’t seem to be hurt or anything, which was good, but she still felt like a complete loser. JuJuBeans nuzzled against her arm as if to assure her that it was okay that they didn’t win.

“Man, I am terrible at this JuJuBeans. At least you’re not hurt or anything.”

“Pichhhhu chu chu”

Smiling, she leaned against a convenient boulder and released a deep sigh. This was harder than she thought, that much was for sure.

"Hahahaha! I'll say." A voice sounded from somewhere above Zoe. There was a rustling and then a boy dropped from the tree above Star. He was a bit taller than her, slightly bulky with muscle as if he'd played sports before becoming a trainer. He was wearing camo pants and combat boots under a black wife beater and he held a leather jacket over one shoulder. "I'm surprised you made it through the tests if you know this little about training a pokemon."

He brushed milk chocolate hair out of milk chocolate eyes and smiled at Zoe, although there was a hint of mockery to his grin. "You're lucky that Poochyena's mother or older brother wasn't around. They're much stronger. You wouldn't have been able to tackle them." He fingered the pokeballs at his belt for a moment before kneeling and holding his fingers out to JuJuBeans.

"Hi, little guy!" He seemed much more friendly to the pokemon. It wasn't the Pichu's fault, after all, that his trainer hadn't considered her chosen career path important enough to learn what she needed to know. The boy straightened and flashed his white teeth at Star again.

"Name's Matt," he said as he held a hand out to her. "Sorry about laughing...but you're never going to catch a pokemon if you keep on that way. If you want, you can travel with me for a while and I'll try to school you on what's going on." His offer wasn't charity...it would be a shame to see the Pichu's talent wasted. If Zoe had even an ounce of talent in her, Matt was the one to bring that out.

Leaning her head against the boulder, she wondered if she was even cut out for this adventure. What would happen if she kept losing? Would JuJuBeans run away from her? Glancing down at her pokemon, she smiled faintly as he once again nuzzled her hand. Her blue eyes closed momentarily before a voice above her caught her attention. Snapping open her eyes, she growled as a male landed in front of her. He was dressed in such a way to make it easy to blend into the environment and she started to doubt her own clothing choice. Shaking off that thought, she scowled at him as he made fun of her attempt at catching a Poochyena and made it sound like he figured she cheated on the tests since she obviously didn’t know much. That wasn’t the case, but she didn’t feel the need to explain to him, not yet at least. It wasn’t her fault that she seemed to forget information she learned for a test shortly after taking the test. Obviously if the Pokemon had been with his family, she wouldn’t have bothered. She wasn’t a complete idiot.

“Pichhhhhhhhuuuuu”

Her scowl deepened as talked friendly with her Pichu, and she couldn’t help but feel slightly hurt as JuJuBeans nuzzled at the man’s fingers. Crossing her arms against her chest, she glared hard at the stranger as he introduced himself as Matt. His smile was sickening, and she didn’t even care that he was nice to look at with his matching brown hair and eyes. Maybe she should shave his head and then he wouldn’t be so handsome or cocky. Normally she easily made friends, but in this case, all she wanted to do was pummel his face in. Staring silently at the outstretched hand, Zoe glanced over at the stick lying beside her, sorely tempted to pick it up in order to beat him.

“Why would I go with someone that has made it a point to make fun of me? I have feelings, you know.” Before she knew it, Zoe was sniffing and tearing up. Oh, this was just getting better and better. She really didn’t want him to leave her alone, and she wanted to learn, but she hated feeling humiliated. JuJuBeans crawled onto her knee, poking her nose to try and cheer her up. It was obviously he wanted to go with Matt, and she didn’t want JuJu to leave her, so…

“The name is Zoe Starwind and… I guess I’ll travel with you…”

"Hey, hey!" Matt seemed to panic just slightly. "You don't need to cry. I was just laughing because really...you're really bad at this. I mean! I don't know what I mean! Look, just stop crying!" He waved his hands between himself and the teary-eyed girl, clearly at a loss. He was only seventeen, tops, and obviously inexperienced in dealing with women and their moods. He relaxed a little when she introduced herself and agreed to travel with him, but he was still a little panicky looking.

"The first thing you need to know is that you almost never battle a pokemon. There are extreme cases, but we won't go into those now. Most of the time, this little Pichu of yours will be battling for you." Matt pulled a pokeball from his belt and tossed it. A figure glowed for a moment before settling into the figure of a lovely Purrloin.

"Take Lorinda here for example. She and I have been together for a long time now. She's my girl." He caught sight of Zoe and huffed a sigh. "Look, I know Purrloin isn't the most manly of pokemon, but from the moment we met, Lorinda and I had a bond. She was my starter pokemon, and she and I still have a stronger bond than I have with any of my other pokemon." He picked up the Purrloin before she could snatch anything from Zoe and she began to purr and rub against him.

"Lorinda knows several attacks, and we're always training to learn more. Right now, she knows Scratch, Growl, Assist, and Faint Attack. When I want to battle with her, I tell her which move I think will do the most good against the opposing pokemon, and she enacts it. The first pokemon to faint loses." He explained patiently while Lorinda purred like a motor in his arms.

Zoe sniffed even as he tried to calm her down or at least take her mind off the situation. When he indicated that she was really bad at this training stuff, she started to cry even harder. He was doing a terrible job at making her feel better, if that was even what he was trying to do. Maybe she didn’t want to go with him after all. JuJuBeans crawled up onto her shoulder, nuzzling her cheek, and she released a deep sigh, fighting to keep from flat out bawling. She was sixteen not a five year old, damn it. Scowling as he mentioned that the battling happened between the Pokemon, she felt her face grow hot as she remembered tackling the creature earlier in an attempt to capture it. Was he watching then? Oh god, she hoped not. The thought brought forth an even brighter blush and she buried her face in her hands before fighting past the emotion and reattaching the empty pokeball and JuJu’s pokeball back onto the belt.

“Errr…”

She didn’t even have anything to say and watched as he brought out one of his own Pokemon. Blinking, she couldn’t help but note it reminded her of a pretty kitty. Resisting the urge to scoop it up and snuggle it, which seemed to be the affect the different pokemon were having on her thus far, Zoe instead listened to him and was immediately jealous of the bond he seemed to have with Lorinda. Would she ever have that bond with JuJuBeans? Something told her that what he was teaching her was elementary and all trainers except her seemed to know it. Maybe she shouldn’t have missed so many classes, but classes were so boring and her ADD always kicked in after a few minutes.

“Oooh… I get it, I think. So… how do I know what moves JuJuBeans happens to have?”

"Well, JuJu is a Pichu. Pichus start out with a certain set of moves. His attacks are Thundershock, Charm, Tail Whip, and probably Charge. You should have gotten that information with the registration packet you received from the pokemon center when you got him." Matt looked at Zoe. His chest heaved in a sigh and he scratched Lorinda behind one ear.

"We should probably get to moving on." He turned to amble down the path. "What made you decide you wanted to be a pokemon trainer, if you didn't want to bother with the classes?" He sounded truly interested in knowing.

Wiping the tears off her cheeks, she swore beneath her breath when he mentioned the information that was in her registration packet. Why didn’t she ever read it? Oh right, it looked like boring school related stuff. Of course, now it was biting her in the butt, and was making her look like a complete moron. Things were getting more and lovelier as the minutes ticked by. Sliding to her feet while ensuring that JuJu remained balanced on her shoulder, she adjusted the backpack straps and couldn’t help but note as Matt heaved a sigh. She was probably annoying the crap out of him and wouldn’t be surprised if he left her somewhere.

When he mentioned that they should probably get going, she could only nod and followed behind him with her head down. It had been a very long time since she felt this embarrassed and probably wouldn’t have been this ashamed if he wasn’t a male and a good looking one at that. She was already in her own little world when she noticed that Matt was asking her a question. Why had she become a pokemon trainer? Now that she was actually thinking about it, she wasn’t so sure anymore.

“…I wanted to be something to prove to my birth father that I wasn’t a loser like him. I also want the shiny badges because they’re super shiny. I’m sure that sounds childish to you, but I want to be something great… to show that birth genetics don’t make you what you are... It’s not that I didn’t want to bother with the classes, but anytime I went to them, I drifted off into my own little world.”

Matt carefully set a pace that Zoe could keep up with. He set Lorinda on his shoulder, where she perched comfortably as if she was long used to it, her oddly shaped tail draping down his back to help her balance. She was small for her level, so it made the perfect sized perch for her and she sat with regal grace, staring straight ahead down the trail as they walked along.

Matt, for his part, listened to Zoe's answer in silence. When she'd finished talking, he kept walking for a few more steps before he began to speak. It was almost as if he were weighing his words out before he spoke them.

"You can't be a trainer for anyone else, Zoe. You're cheating yourself, and you're cheating your pokemon if you do that. If you want to be a trainer...truly want it in here..." here, he paused and thumped his heart with one fist. "Then be a trainer. But if you don't want it, then maybe you should consider another path." He shrugged and looked up at the sky. It was a little breezy, but otherwise not overly terrible, weather-wise.

"I became a trainer because there wasn't much else to be. My dad's a gym master...or he was. He might've retired by now, 'far as I know," Matt looked at Zoe. "But when I got Lorinda, I realized that if I really want to do this, that if I really want to be a trainer, then I owe it to my pokemon and to myself to do the best job that I can do and learn all that I can, so that when I battle I don't let Lorinda down...or myself down, either, for that matter."

He glanced at the Purrloin on his shoulder and then turned his chocolate-eyed gaze to Zoe. "Anyway, that's what I learned when I became a trainer." He shrugged the shoulder that Lorinda wasn't sitting on and looked at the path ahead of them.

Zoe couldn’t help the huge yawn that made its way out of her mouth. She wasn’t necessarily sleepy, but all this talking and thoughts about the past was exhausting her. JuJuBeans remained on her shoulder, keeping his balance much like Lorinda was doing on Matt’s shoulder. As she walked, she absentmindedly patted the pokemon and felt the tightness of her chest loosening ever so slightly. At least he was no longer talking down to her. Well, in actuality he wasn’t even talking, so that wasn’t the same, but she would take it.

When he finally began to speak, she couldn’t help but mentally agree with what he was saying. It was as if deep down she already knew that she was going about this for all the wrong reasons, but couldn’t truly convenience herself. Keeping silent, she glanced down at her chest and poked at it a bit before continuing walking behind him. Did she truly want to be a trainer? Glancing over at JuJuBeans who was entertaining himself with strands of her hair, she realized that she didn’t know for sure. The only thing she did know was that she no longer wanted to disappoint her Pichu and would do anything she could to keep him from being hurt because of her stupidity.

“I guess you’re right, Matt.” JuJuBeans nodded in agreement and reached up to snatch her hat, putting it on over his ears. Snickering, Zoe quickly caught up with Matt and glanced ahead of them, ignoring the warmth as her cheeks once again turned a pinkish shade.

"'Course I am," Matt said with an easy smile to let her know he was joking. He stopped, suddenly, and flung his arm out in front of her to stop her and even push her slightly behind him. His eyes narrowed dangerously as he stared ahead of them on the path. A slender girl about Matt's age was standing in the path ahead of them with a boy a little younger than Zoe at her side.

The girl had brilliant black hair with red highlights and her makeup was borderline goth with red accents, and her clothing followed suit. She was wearing black fishnet leggings under a bright red skirt that barely came down to mid-thigh and she wore a fishnet shirt over a red tank top, and her nails were tipped in black. Her fingernail touched her lower lip as she spotted Matt and Zoe and she smiled wickedly.

"Hello, Matthew Weaver," she said.

"Naomi Pierce," Matt said, his voice hostile.

"And hello, Lorinda-poo." Lorinda hissed at the woman and dug her claws into Matt's shoulder, arching her back like a typical cat would.

"What do you want, Naomi?" Matt asked icily.

"Is that any way to speak to me, Matthew? I'm here to train my little brother, as you well know. Bobby is a trainer now, too, as you know. Care for a battle?"

"We have no quarrel with you." Matt was clearly trying to avoid the battle.

"Let me rephrase that, Matthew Darling. If you want past Robert and I, you will have to beat us."

"That is, if your girlfriend's Pichu doesn't zap her to death," the young boy piped up with a sneer. He grabbed a pokeball from his belt and threw it. "I choose you, Poochyena!"

"And I choose you, Growlithe!" Naomi threw a pokeball, leaving a growling, dark-looking Growlithe staring at Matt while the familiar-looking Poochyena growled aggressively at Zoe.

Already relaxing as they walked, Zoe stuck out her tongue at his comment and nearly bit through it when his arm suddenly connected with her shoulder. Realizing that he had pushed her behind him slightly, she started to snap at him, but quickly spotted the two standing in front of them in the path. It was a female and a tiny little boy, and she wondered if they were both trainers or if she was just babysitting the squirt. The girl’s hair was beautiful, something that Zoe had always wanted to try, but never had the guts to actually attempt. Heck, every inch of the girl was something that Zoe had always wanted to wear, but her parents probably wouldn’t like it much, which is why she didn’t ever adventure outside of her comfort zone. Maybe by the time she was finished training and collecting badges, she would finally work up the guts to change her appearance. It took her a few minutes to realize that the girl knew Matt and he knew her, but it didn’t’ seem like a friendly acquaintance. Was she a bad person or an ex-girlfriend?

Why does her sudden appearance make me jealous? Oh, this doesn’t bode well at all.

Deciding to remain quiet as the two spoke back and forth, she couldn’t help but gape a smidge when Naomi mentioned that her little brother was a trainer just like them. Wasn’t he a little young? The girl wanted to battle, and Zoe felt her stomach beginning to clench up a little bit. She wasn’t ready to battle, especially since her last attempt failed hardcore. Frowning a little, Zoe was thankful for Matt’s attempts to avoid the battle, but it seemed to be a useless attempt. Pichu replaced the hat upon her head and she took a moment to readjust it so that almost all of her silver hair was up beneath it and out of her way. Couldn’t they just turn back around and head a different direction or would that be too cowardly. Still remaining quiet and rather calm, Zoe couldn’t help but snarl when it was mentioned that she was Matt’s girlfriend.

“For your information, little brat, I’m not his girlfriend and JuJuBeans would NEVER hurt me.”

About to say more, Zoe found herself staring at a rather familiar canine. Surely this wasn’t the same Pokemon, right? The way it was growing aggressively at her made her figure it was and she couldn’t help but release a deep aggravated sigh. Why did things like this seem to always happen to her? Glancing over at Matt, Starwind shrugged and nodded towards her Pichu who bounced off her shoulder and landed in front of her. She fought to remember what Matt had said was JuJu’s attacks and flicked her tongue against her teeth.

“JuJuBeans, use Thundershock on Poochyena!”

"Sure he isn't. But you want him to be," Bobby sneered. He was clearly a little snark and his sister wasn't any better. When she shouted at JuJuBeans to use thundershock, he sneered. "Brace yourself, Poochyena!"

"Lorinda, use Scratch!" Matt called. Lorinda launched off of his shoulder and ran at the Growlithe, hissing and jumping, her wicked claws unsheathing and swatting at the Growlithe's head. The Growlithe cried out in pain and fell back before he straightened.

"Growlithe! Hit back with Ember!" Naomi snarled. Her Growlithe howled and opened his mouth, spraying embers out of it that struck the feline in return and made her yowl angrily, hissing her pain.

“You little brat, I can’t wait to make you bawl like the little baby you are!”

JuJuBeans leapt into action, his pace directing him towards where Poochyena happened to be. He was still fresh and inexperienced like she was, but the two were bound to make up for the inexperience with confidence. JuJu’s cheeks sparked with electricity and without warning, the electricity shot out towards that the dogs exposed side. Her idea was to knock the Pokemon off balance and follow up the attack with another one that would knock the canine off balance. She still wasn’t sure if she had what it took to be a trainer, but damn, she loved the adrenaline.

“Yeah! That’s it, JuJu!”

"Aww! C'mon, Poochyena! You can do better than that!" Bobby clenched his fists."Tackle that Pichu!" The Poochyena - which upon closer glance was actually larger than the Poochyena that Zoe had tried to catch - took a running leap at JuJuBeans, tackling the Pichu.

"Yeah! That's the way!" He pumped his fist into the air and jumped.

Growlithe

"Don't give up, Lorinda. It's okay! Use Growl!" Matt was calling to the side at Lorinda. The Purrloin's battle with the Growlithe seemed to be much more rapid-paced than the battle of the two beginners, partially because of higher experience levels and partially because it was blatantly obvious that Naomi was trying to keep Matt from being able to assist Zoe in any way.

"Is that all you've got, Matthew? So typical. You're worlds behind me. Growlithe, use Bite!" Flashes of the battle would come to Zoe, despite how focused she seemed to be, and typically every now and then Bobby's eyes would stray from Poochyena towards his sister's Growlithe and the Purrloin that it was fighting.

Frowning as the Poochyena tacked JuJuBeans, Zoe tried to quickly come up with another strategy. There had to be some sort of way to win that doesn’t include her taking a stick to the other Pokemon like before. Unfortunately, this one was larger than the other one, but it wasn’t her trying to capture him on her own this time, so perhaps things would be different. Scrunching up her nose, she briefly glanced over towards Matt before returning her attention towards her own battle.

“It’s all good, Juje! Use Tail Whip and knock that Poochyena in the face!”

“Pichuuuuuu!”

JuJuBeans rolled to his feet after being tackled and without wasting a moment whipped his tail at the face of the Poochyena with all his might. Could she stack the attacks and do like a combo? Was that illegal? Hell, she didn’t know and right now, she didn’t care. So, without missing a beat, she cupped her hands to her face and shouted to her Pichu.

“Now use charm!” Pichu nodded and towards towards the other Pokemon, starting to use his charm ability on the Poochyena.
