Ever since she was a little tyke, Zoe always tended to come up with the strangest names when it came to naming her pets. Her parents let her call them whatever she wanted, but deep down she knew they thought she was a bit odd. The very first time, they heard her name her kitten a strange name, they pretty much had the same look that Matt currently had. Like before, she slid back away from him, curling up a little bit in shame. Was it that terrible of a name?
When he mentioned that they should get moving, the sixteen year could only nod in agreement. She was still feeling pretty bad about his reaction, but she didn’t really want too change the name. Sighing, she climbed to her feet, letting JuJuBeans get comfortable on her shoulder before she started walking. Her pace came to a full-halt though at the realization that she would have to fight in the next battle. What if she screwed up and Ju got hurt because of it?
“There’s nothing wrong with catching them the unusual way, but I guess I can try it the other way. What if I screw up the next battle, Matt? I hate looking foolish.” There it was, the nagging pessimistic voice again. Shaking it away, she decided from this moment on, she was going to be confident and perhaps it a little bit cocky. That after all was her normal mannerisms and it was high time she stopped being a whiny teen.
“Agreed! Next battle will be mine and I’mma win it!”

"You won't win every battle, Zoe. I'll tell you true. You'll lose, just like every other trainer who's ever walked these paths and every other path out there for a trainer to walk." Matt walked with a steady stride that seemed slightly shorter than his natural step probably was, adjusted no doubt for her shorter legs.
"But each loss is a learning opportunity. It'll suck, and you'll feel embarrassed, and there'll be sometimes when you'll wonder what good it is. A true trainer has the determination to accept those losses. You'll need them, Zoe. They'll make you strong. You'll have to lose in order to learn." Matt stretched slowly and kept walking.
"This is the route to Ashmere. Ashmere is the last place you can resupply and rest before your journey. They have a Pokémon center there, too, so you can heal your Pokémon." Matt grinned. "Beyond that...the world awaits!"

Zoe shoved her hands into her pockets, focusing on her footsteps and listening to the foliage around them. It really was a pretty peaceful place aside from the battle that had just occurred, and she came to enjoy nature more and more each moment she stayed outside. She didn’t even bat an eye when he made a point to remind her that she wouldn’t win every battle. Of course she knew that, but she wanted to think confident regardless of the percentage of wins to losses or losses to win, whichever it happened to be. Her mind started to wander as he continued to talk to her about losing, and she couldn’t help but wonder what her parents would think if they knew she was alone with a boy.
Oh man, my parents would freak out if they knew I was walking around the forest with a teenage boy. Heeeee…!
Returning her attention back towards Matt just as he was finishing up, she just nodded and tried to pass off that she had been listening the entire time. Scrunching her nose up, Zoe thought about what he had said and determined that she didn’t want to lose even if it would give her strength and whatnot. Yes, it would happen, but that didn’t mean she would give it any less enthusiasm and try.
“I get what you’re saying, Matt. I just want to try my very best no matter what. So, Ashmere is the last place to stock up before beginning the real journey? What happens if we’re out in the middle of nowhere and something happens or we run out of food? Man, I can’t run out of food or I might end up eating you.” Grinning, Zoe stuck her tongue out at Matt, growing more and more comfortable with him as the time ticked by.

"You misunderstand, Zoe." Matt laughed. "I'm not trying to say not to do your best and fight your hardest in every fight. I just don't want you to lose all of your hope and self confidence if you lose, either. I've seen that happen to some new trainers. They fight so hard and then lose hope with their first loss because their spirits are broken. Some trainers will be mean about it, too." He grimaced. "My first ever loss was to Naomi, and that's one trainer you never want to lose to if you can help it."
He looked at her when she wailed about eating him and laughed. "As you gain experience, you'll learn what berries you can eat and what berries are only good for your Pokémon. It's just a matter of learning the trade and paying close attention instead of spacing out every third word."
He stopped under a tree laden with fresh apples to see if she'd phased out on him again, and he glanced up in the tree. He grinned at what he saw there and leaned on the trunk, reaching up and picking an apple. He took a big bite of it, watching Zoe.
"Don't be so negative all of the time!" He tossed Zoe a second apple. "Just because I say something doesn't mean I'm assuming you're going to fail. I just think you need to hear it, because it's something that all trainers need to hear."
"Buizel! Buiz!" A chittering chatter of a sound came from above him and moments later there was a hushed voice.
"Light! Sh!"
"Buizel! Buiz Buiz Buizel!"
"Yeary! They'll find us!" There was a stirring on the branches, which bounced and showered apples upon those below, and then two identical otter heads poked out of the leafy branches to stare down at Zoe and Matt and Zoe's two Pokémon.
"Buizel!" They chittered happily.

Of course she misunderstood what he meant, that was the story of her life. Well, one of her stories at least. Grinning to herself, Zoe wondered just how much about her young life was true, or how much was made up so she could deal with her past. Shrugging to herself, she returned her attention back to Matt and mentally noted that losing to Naomi wasn’t a good thing and until she had more experience, she needed to avoid that woman at all costs. It seemed odd that she was now battling with the use of strange creatures instead of fighting with her fists like she had done so many times before. In the past, if she would have met up with Naomi, then their scuffle would have ended in a fist fight, but not now. Well, hopefully not now, but sometimes habits were hard to break.
Berries? What is he talking about?
Realizing she had tuned him out again, Star took about four more steps before noticing that he had stopped walking. Pausing, she turned herself around and glanced up at the apple. Her eyes roamed from the apple in his hand, to his mouth, all the way up to the branches of the tree where tons more apples happened to be waiting to be plucked. Her mouth watered and as he tossed an apple, she couldn’t do much more than shrug at his request for her to stop being so negative. Normally she wasn’t, but this was a whole different experience, and until she got the hang of it, she was going to be more negative than normal. Nomming happily on the apple, Zoe had the fruit eaten in a matter of seconds.
“What about berries and every third word?”
She really needed to start paying more attention to everything before the lack of attention got her into trouble. Just about to snatch another apple from the tree, she couldn’t help but arch a brow at a strange buglike sound coming from above them. She didn’t do bugs… they scared the crap out of her, so she stared up with wide frightened eyes, trying to figure out what it was above them. When apples rained down on their heads, Starwind squeaked and catch a few before covering her head. Shoving them into her backpack, she glanced back up, finding herself looking at two strange creatures.
“What the…?”
“Pichuuuuuuu chu chuuuuuuu”
“Poooooochhhyennnna”

"Buizel?" The larger of the two heads tilted slightly as it stared at Zoe.
"What is it, Light? Who are they?" A scruffy little-boy head shoved out of the leaves and stared down at Zoe, dirt covering the entire round little face.
"Buizel!" The smaller of the two otter heads said.
"I see them, Yeary." The boy stared down at Zoe for a long moment. "Who're you? A new Trainer? Which Pokemon is yours? Ooh is it the Pichu? I like Pichus."
"Buizel!" The two otter heads disappeared and then there was a skittering and they bounded down a ladder that had apparently been made at the back of the tree and began sniffing over Zoe and her Pokémon.
"Light! Yeary! Stop that!" The little boy's face disappeared and there were soft thuds as his feet hit the wooden rungs of the ladder and then he appeared. No more than seven or eight at most, he was wearing a pair of shorts and a T-Shirt with a Pokémon on it identical to the two otters. "Light! Yeary!" Pudgy little boy fists grabbed the two Buizel by the scruffs and he pulled them back.
"Sorry. They listen to my dad lots better than me."

Glad they weren’t bugs, Zoe munched on an apple as she silently stared up at them. When a little boy poked his head out of the leaves, she coughed harshly, nearly choking on a huge piece of apple she had just bitten off. Spitting out the apple, she couldn’t help but snicker as it whacked Matt in the side of his face. Innocently looking away, she once again diverted her gaze back towards the strange kid and his Pokémon. She noticed that the tyke was calling one Light and the other Yeary and shot a look at Matt to indicate that she wasn’t the only one that came up with weird names.
Returning to munching on the apple, she watched the strange creature disappear from sight before appearing from around the tree, heading for her and her Pokémon. Stepping in front of her Poochyena, she felt her entire body tensing up in apprehension. Were they going to try and battle her or something worse? It took her a few minutes to realize that the boy had addressed her previously, and she felt pretty rude because she hadn’t answered him back. So, while his Pokémon sniffed her, JuJuBeans, and Snugs, Star decided to respond back to his inquiry.
“I’m Zoe Starwind and this is Matt --- uhh – Matt something. The Pichu and Poochyena are mine and are named JuJuBeans and Snuggabubble McSqueezley respectively.” Smiling towards the kiddo as he tried to pull the two Pokémon back, she couldn’t help but feel for the kid’s bravery.
“It’s okay, squirt. What’s your name? Is your dad out here somewhere or are you just wandering around all wily Nelly?”

"My name's Mitchy. Dad's home for now. I'm trying to hide with his Buizel, Light and Yeary, so he won't leave again. He's a fisherman. Light and Yeary help him find and catch the fish so that he can make money." The boy smiled at Zoe widely, showing missing front bottom teeth that were starting to come in.
"Buizel are really good swimmers, and they like fish, so Dad uses them. If I hide with them, he can't go away. That's why we're in the fort. Dad and I built it last winter."
"If your dad helped you build it, then doesn't he know how to find it?" Matt asked, seeming amused. Mitchy seemed annoyed that the older boy was talking to him.
"Well, I suppose so..." he sounded a little perturbed. "But it'll take time for him to find us so maybe he'll stay?"
Matt chuckled softly, but didn't say anything further.

Zoe fought to keep her face neutral when the boy soon identified as Mitchy was out in the woods by himself. Well, he wasn’t alone because the two Pokemon were there, but still, without an adult. That wasn’t why she was fighting to keep from making some form of expression. No, it was his comment that he was hiding from his father so that the man couldn’t leave. It was sad to think that he missed his dad so much that he would actually go into hiding, but adults did what they felt was right, so maybe his dad went fishing so they wouldn’t starve to death? Or maybe he sold the fish at the market so that he could by his kid something nice? What about his mom?
Realizing that Mitchy said exactly why his dad went fishing, she realized that Matt was right… she really needed to focus more on the conversation and not space out after a few words.Smirking at Matt’s question, Star’s grin grew wider at Mitchy’s comment. The poor kid wanted his dad to stay so badly, but had he ever asked? Or maybe asked to go with his dad? It wouldn’t take his dad all that long to find Mitchy, and she couldn’t help but sigh as the thought of the boy sadly watching his dad leave with Light and Yeary popped into her head. Shaking it out, she leaned forward to rub the kid’s hair, grinning again.
“Well kiddo, looks like you’re doing a really good job at hiding. But, have you asked to go with your pops? Or asked him to stay home this time?”

"I'm too young to go. I have to be ten. When I'm ten, I'm going to be big enough to start learning how to control the Buizel so I can fish. But until then I have to stay home with Mrs. Hank. She's old and she smells like old lady. Her Persian smells, too." Mitchy sounded absolutely glum at the thought of staying home with the old lady.
Matt chuckled.
"I've stayed with old ladies in my time, too, Kid." He grinned softly. "One day, you'll love that old lady with everything in your heart. Hold her close now, while you're young enough to appreciate her."
"I guess." Mitchy wilted a little more. He looked at Zoe. "Look. D'you think...um...could you kiss me? I'm afraid Mrs. Hank will one of these days and she'll be my first kiss and old lady first kiss..." The look on the little boy's face was poignant, and behind his back where he couldn't see, Matt was suddenly bright red with a hand over his mouth trying to keep himself from laughing.

Leaning back on her heels, Zoe couldn’t help but snicker at his loving description of the nanny that was looking after him. Well, she probably wasn’t a nanny, but that was the only thing Zoe could think of to call the woman. Most old people smelled funny, and she had sniffed a few in her visits to the local old folks home. She didn’t ever want to grow up, and if she did, she would make sure she didn’t’ smell weird like other old people. She wondered if the Persian was old too, because she couldn’t think of any time that her own cats smelled, except for their litter boxes. Scrunching up her nose, she glanced over at Matt’s comment and knew he was right. It was always best to cherish every relationship because life was a fickle mistress that left whenever it felt the urge.
“Matt’s right, squirt.”
Stretching a bit, Starwind was just about to suggest he return to hiding in case his pops came wandering by, but the boys next comment caught her completely off guard. Would she kiss him? Wuuuuuut? Arching a brow, she kept her face blank, not wanting to hurt his feelings. His logic was right on, but still… she was sixteen and he was eight. Shifting her gaze towards Matt, she glared at his red face and then found herself wondering what it would feel like to kiss Matt. Her face immediately turned red, and she turned back to Mitchy and pushed aside the blush before the boy noticed it.
“Kiddo, I guarantee you’ll have a line of girls waiting to kiss you. You’ll be smooth and a ladies man.” Grinning, she leaned forward and kissed his cheek.

"I guess." And then that wicked child did something that no doubt Zoe wouldn't suspect. Wouldn't be prepared for. Certainly wouldn't know how to react to. Just as her lips moved to kiss his cheek, he turned his head to catch it square on the lips and kissed her back.
Matt, meanwhile, was doubled over violently red choking with the effort not to laugh and completely spoil the boy's moment. He shook with silent laughter and tears streamed down his face. Oh, this was good. This was perfect.
"Thanks, Doll!" Mitchy gave his gap-toothed grin and turned and ran off. "Come on Light! Come on, Yeary!" He disappeared into the woods with the two Buizel right after him.
Matt finally lost the battle with his laughter and it roared across the tree tops as he fell over, holding his abdomen and cackling.

Zoe was prepared to kiss the kid on the cheek and then shoo him away so that she and Matt could continue their long walk to nowhere, but just as she felt her lips nearing his cheek, Mitchy turned his head. Squeaking as her lips pressed against his, she jerked back and snorted. The sudden urge to grab the kid by the arm and spank him, she couldn’t help but shake her head when he gave her a grin and called her Doll. Rolling her eyes as he ran off, she stalked over to Matt who was laughing and kicked him hard in the butt.
“Shut up!”
Jumping on him, she intended on straddling his waist in order to pin him down. Her intent was to … well, she wasn’t really sure, but she was going to make him pay for laughing at her misfortune. She should have known that Mitchy would try something like that, but dang it, it wasn’t supposed to happen. Her face was scrunched up into the best scowl she could portray and growled under her breath.
“Stop laughing at me or else!!!!!!”

Matt was stronger than Zoe, though, and even laughing he grabbed her and rolled her to pin her beneath him. He wasn't so far gone that he'd forgotten Juju, either, because one hand caught the small Pichu and set JuJuBeans on the ground before he pinned Zoe's wrists above her head and grinned impishly down at her.
"Or what, Zoe? What will you do? Will you kiss me?" Matt schooled his face into a serious look and lowered his head, leaving his lips inches from hers as he stared at her. "Will you give me my first kiss, Zoe?"
And then his serious look morphed into a huge grin and he laughed boisterously and rolled off of her, climbing to his feet and offering her his hand. "Come on, love bird. Let's get going before he decides to come back with his grandma's ring or something."

Zoe had never been on the side of a fight that the opponent was weaker than her, but this was the first time she had been rolled on top and she found the whole event quite confusing. Blinking up at Matt as JuJu blinked beside the two, confusion evident upon his face, Zoe narrowed her eyes. Her wrists were pinned above her head, and she found herself at the mercy of Matt. Was this really what she wanted? What was he going to do to her now that he had her pinned with his lips inches from hers? Her mind began to wander, but his words brought her back to reality quickly. It didn’t take a genius to realize he was mocking the situation, and as he released her with more laughter, she remained laying on the ground. For some reason, his mocking her was beginning to hurt her feelings and before she knew it, Zoe had rolled over and curled up.
“Chuuu?”
Pichu scooted next to Zoe and was patting her on the head as the teenager began to earnestly cry. It was all fun and games until someone’s feelings got hurt, and that was exactly what happened to her feelings. Burying her head in her arms, she cried even harder, his comments and actions reminding her of the last time she was in a public school. The taunts made their way back into her mind, and she was beginning to wish she had never left on this journey. Was this how her life was going to be? Full of taunts and laughs and mean boys?
