Deep down, Zoe wasn’t expecting the charm attack work two times in a row on the same Pokemon, but it was worth a try. She tried to keep from showing disappointment on her face as Cleo had her Growlithe use Ember for the third time. There was no time to shout to JuJu to move out of the way, and since he was busy trying to sway Flame like before, he had no real clue what was about to come. Glancing over at Matt, Zoe shot him an unreadable look before shooting her attention back to her Pichu just as the flames nailed him right in the face.

“Oh, no, JuJu!”

She was already moving forward as JuJu fell over before fainting, catching him in her arms. Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, and she fought to keep from crying. Putting his pokeball beside him, she watched as he vanished into it, and placed the ball back on her belt, patting it gently. Sliding back up to her feet, she rubbed her eyes and walked over to Cleo, hand out for a friendly handshake.

“Great job, Cleo… Thanks for the experience. Looks like I have a lot to work on to win the next time!”

"Hey, you did really well! Don't cry, Zoe. Your Pichu looked tired when you came in. You did really well for him being that tired." Cleo grinned and shook Zoe's hand. She glanced at the sky.

"Listen, it's starting to get dark. Why don't you come back to my camp and I'll see if I have anything there to make him feel better? It's too late to make it to Ashmere tonight, you'll have to do it tomorrow."

Matt moved up beside Zoe and handed her Snugga to cuddle on. He reached out and shook Cleo's hand.

"I'm Matt Pierce," he said with a grin, lifting his brows.

"Cleo James," Cleo answered with a grin and then turned to look at Zoe. "So what do you think?"

Even with Cleo’s encouraging words, Zoe wasn’t sure how to feel about the loss. She knew that losing was important, and would help her grow, but it was still a slight mood dampener. Not only that, she felt terrible with pushing JuJu so much, and hoped he wouldn’t resent her later on when he woke back up. Chewing on her bottom lip as Cleo returned the handshake, she felt her bottom lip starting to wubble a little. Biting on it to keep it from wubbling more, she also glanced up at the sky. When did it start to get dark so quickly?

Well, your first loss, Zoe. At least you gave it your best…!

When Matt moved beside her, she gladly took Snugga out of his arms and snuggled her Poochyena. It was exactly what she needed and couldn’t help but grin at the name because it fit the Pokemon who was happily snuggling her back. Matt and Cleo introduced themselves to each other and she wondered if Matt found Cleo cute. What if he asked her to join the two because he liked her? Shaking out the thought, she nodded as if thinking about the question and nothing else.

“Sure, going to your camp sounds great…!”

"Great, come along! Maybe we'll see some cool Pokemon tonight. Different Pokemon come out at night than during the day. I have a fire built up. Do you know how to build one? You seem like you've just begun your journey. I remember when I started my journey. I couldn't tell a blade of grass from a Caterpie, I was so green." Cleo glanced at Zoe and grinned. "Green meaning brand new to this, not green the color."

Cleo stepped up to a camp site, where her bedroll had been spread out beside a ready-to-light fire and a small stream, and she motioned to a few stumps sitting around the fire fixings. "Grab a stump. I'll get some water boiling. Check that bag over there for a Super Potion. It should bring your Pichu back to full health, although I wouldn't expect him to wake up until tomorrow. A good night's sleep is honestly the best thing for him right now."

Cleo stepped down to the stream with a pot to get some water. Matt looked at Zoe and smiled, winking at her gently. "You did fine. Don't worry about JuJu. He wanted to battle for your sake," he said. "He'll be fine tomorrow and he'll wake up ready to go."

Cleo laughed and nodded as she walked back from the small stream with Flame beside her. Flame settled down beside the stump Cleo picked to sit at. Her hand stroked down the Growlithe's back and then she reached into her pack and pulled out a collapsible bowl, filling it with Pokemon food and setting it before Flame.

"Did you get Pokemon Food in the Capital before you left?" Cleo asked. "If you didn't, your Poochyena and any other Pokemon can have some of mine, and I'll show you what to look for when you get to Ashmere."

Zoe tried to be upbeat and positive as they walked back towards Cleo’s campsite. But, the only thing she could think of was that Matt would no longer care about her because Cleo was beautiful and he would want to stay with her. Nomming on her hair, she tried to listen to everything that Cleo was talking about, but once again her ADD kicked in and she was too busy looking around wondering how a blade of grass could look like anything else. Did that mean there were Pokemon that could look like a tree or like rocks? Or like clouds or flowers, or stuff like that? Were there Pokemon that looked like cows or horses? Oh great, she was wandering mentally again.

At some point in time they had reached the campsite, and Zoe quickly learned just by looking around that she was missing a lot of important items. Slinking over to a stump, she let Snugga rest in her lap while she patted him gently. Her eyes gazed over at the bag, and with a soft sigh, she placed her Poochyena down and shimmied over to the bag, pulling out the Super Potion. Deciding to let him sleep, she pocketed the potion and moved back to her stump, shooting Matt a weak smile.

“I know, but I still feel like I let him down by having a crappy strategy. Cleo, thanks for the super potion, I’mma give it to him tomorrow.”

Nomming more on her hair, a habit she picked up a long time ago, Zoe watched Cleo fill up a collapsible bowl; something she didn’t have of course. That just reminded her of something else she had to purchase, and she wondered if the guide listed stuff one would need to purchase in order to survive in the forest. Maybe she should have read the guide completely. Once again Cleo offered some of her stuff, which made Zoe feel even worse.

“I have Pokemon food, but thanks for the offer. I also appreciate your help once we get to Ashmore. I don’t think I have half of what I actually need.”

Pulling off her backpack, she dug through it for some food and tugged it out in addition to something she could use as a bowl for the time being. Placing it on the ground, she filled it with the food and let Snugga go to town. Smiling, she finally took the hat off her head, letting her long silver hair brush across her shoulder while bits of it covered some of her face. Leaning back on the stump, she stretched and abruptly fell off the stump and onto her back. Oh yes, this day was just ending fantastically…

"First loss, huh?" Cleo grinned at Zoe. "You're probably wondering how much more stupid you can be, thinking you may never be good at this, and that you failed your Pokemon."

Matt held up a hand. "She has a problem with paying attention sometimes." He glanced at Zoe and snapped his fingers right in front of her nose. "Hey. You want to actually go somewhere? Pay attention. Look at her badges, Zoe. She has six badges already. She doesn't have to be here talking to you, lending you her wisdom." This was why he hadn't stepped in to help her with JuJu earlier. He'd been hoping she'd be willing to listen - and actually follow through - to someone even more experienced than him. Apparently not. It made him wonder if he was wasting his time...if he should send her on her way after Ashmere and find someone else to travel with himself.

Cleo smiled a little. "You caught me. Not many people, especially new trainers, are observant enough to notice the badges." She reached out and picked up the bag, releasing the badges from it and putting them back into place along her belt. "Simba, Tuxedo, you guys can come out now."

The bushes nearby rattled and there was a splashing sound out in the water, and then a Luxio came from the bushes regally to sit beside Cleo while a Prinplup waddled up from the water's edge. The Pokemon stood beside Cleo until she had two more bowls filled, and then they began to eat hungrily, watching the newcomers closely.

"Simba and Tuxedo were watching the camp for me. I'm on a search for Professor Mahogany, you see, and I thought that while I was lurking on Route 1, I would help a few new trainers and their Pokemon grow stronger. I brought some super potions so that I could heal them back up if they lost, like your poor Pichu."

As she laid there on her back with Snugga looking oddly at her, Zoe couldn’t help but appreciate just how beautiful the forest was when it was near dark. Cleo said exactly how she was feeling at the moment, but instead of immediately replying, Zoe opted to keep quiet for the moment. Stretching a little, she blinked when Matt snapped his fingers right in front of her nose before berating her. Scowling, Zoe sat up and shot a glare towards Matt.

“I was paying attention, gosh. I know she doesn’t have to help me, but how many times to I have to say thank you or I appreciate it? I really DO appreciate the both of you trying to help me out because I know you don’t have to waste your time on someone like me. I’m trying to focus on everything that’s being said, but when I feel overwhelmed, I tend to space off. I’m not doing it to be rude or anything; it’s just something I’ve had happen since I was a little kid! If you don’t want to stay with me, then fine. I don’t want to force you to do anything you don’t want to do! It’s not like I can actually die out here or anything…”

Could she die? Shaking her head, she put the empty container back into her backpack and shoved her hat back onto her head. Pulling the pack over her shoulders, she picked up Snugga and sniffed a little. She briefly glanced over towards the two new Pokemon, marveling at them for a moment. It was obvious that she was too far beneath them and with her added inability to concentrate all the time, maybe she was just not cut out of this. This was the first time in her life that she had absolutely no confidence in her skills and perhaps that was what she hated the most.

“Sorry…” Without saying another word, she headed away from the campsite. Sure, it was getting pretty dark, but… she could survive, right? It wasn’t scary at night, right? Yep… she was even lying to herself. Scooting back a little so that she was still within the light of the campfire, but far enough away to be separate, Zoe stared at the dark forest, wondering if there were dangerous Pokemon out there that hurt humans.

“Errrr… Are there … dangerous animals out there? Like, Pokemon that eat human girls?”

There was a soft giggle in the darkness, and then another. There was a shifting at the very edge of the light and a Pokemon that looked like a young girl stepped up, just at the edge of the light but not fully in it. Just enough to be seen, despite the fire killing Zoe's night vision.

"Rita!" She called softly and batted her eyelashes, assuming a cute pose. "Gothorita!" She kept her cute pose. There was a pause, and then a soft purring voice answered from behind Zoe.

"Eeespeon!" A cat-like pokemon leapt down from a limb to land beside Zoe, staring at her curiously and letting its tail twitch back and forth slowly as a cat would. Its eyes seemed to convey a smile at Zoe.

"Gothorita!" The little girl Pokemon said, pleased. She looked at Zoe's Snugga and tilted her head the other way. "Gothorita!"

Zoe began to seriously debate whether or not it was an intelligent move to head out into the dark forest at night. Maybe she should just curl up in her sleeping bag in a corner and wait until morning. She had a habit of overreacting and acting impulsively, and this was probably one of those times. Her nose twitched a little as she heard a giggle. Glancing back at Cleo and Matt, it soon became obvious that the sound wasn’t from them, and as another giggle echoed from nearby, she prepared herself for another trainer and more importantly, another battle. However, when a strange female-like figure stepped out into the shadows, Star strained her eyes, trying to see the Pokemon clearly.

Great… now what…?

She looked adorable, but looks could be and probably would be deceiving. From behind her came a purring sound, and it took quite a bit to keep from jumping when a catlike creature landed beside her. She looooooooooved cats and fought to reach down and pet it because it wasn’t an ordinary animal, and she had to quickly remind herself of that fact. Smiling slightly down at the Pokemon who appeared to be smiling with its eyes, she waited to see what’s would happen next. When the girl-like Pokemon looked at Snugga, who looked back curiously, Zoe couldn’t help but squeak when her Poochyena suddenly fainted. What magics were invoked here?!

“Err… I know I was a real jerk to you both but… I’d love your help and guidance right about now…”

The little-girl Pokemon giggled again softly, and suddenly another cat-like Espeon stepped out of the bushes and tilted its head, flickering its ears. There was a second giggle from the same bushes and a second little-girl Pokemon ran out of the bushes as if she'd been chasing the Pokemon.

The second Gothorita had purple instead of white bows, and she stopped and tilted her head at the sight of Zoe. A voice suddenly whispered through the back of Zoe's mind, a giggling little-girl voice.

What have you found, sister?

I think it's a trainer. The first Gothorita bounced in place and stared at Zoe. It tried to call out to the Large One over there.

Is that the large one that caught our sister?

I believe it is. The brain waves are correct.

The little Gothorita girls were obviously being cruel, talking about her blatantly in a way she would understand as if she wasn't there at all to hear.

As if things weren’t strange enough, another catty creature appeared in addition with another girly Pokemon. Before she could even say a word though, the second girl was staring at her, and all of a sudden a voice spoke as if a passing thought in her mind. Snapping her head around, she tried to figure out what was going on, and hissed in irritation as the talking continued. It appeared to her, if her brain was functioning properly that the two girl-like Pokemon were talking about her and a large one?

Wonder if they mean Matt… Why isn’t he or Cleo doing anything?

Frowning, she felt her fists clenching up, and she glared hard at the four Pokemon. She couldn’t call forth JuJu and knew that Mimic wouldn’t be strong enough to take on all four, so what was she supposed to do? She supposed she could go back to the campfire and just ignore the four creatures, but wouldn’t that be cowardly. Plus, because Matt and Cleo hadn’t said anything to her since her little boohoo session, she was pretty much on her own. Heck, the two were probably glad she was gone so they could make out or whatever. Too bad Matt would never know how she truly felt about him. Snapping her attention back to the situation at hand, she growled softly, not appreciating being talked about the way the two girl-creatures were talking about her.

“Hey! Don’t be rude! What do you want?”

Aw, listen to it whine. The white and black Gothorita giggled. I wonder if we can catch it in its own Pokeball. We can battle it!

The purple and black Gothorita bounced in place, bobbing her head back and forth slowly. If we catch it, the Large One will be angry. She seemed positively delighted at the thought. That stupid Luxio keeps us from our sister.

Yes, yes! Let's catch it and free its Pokemon! The white and black one clapped gleefully and then pointed at Zoe.

"Gothorita! Rita Ri! Ta Gothorita!"

One of the Espeon started prowling towards Zoe with clear intent. It crouched carefully and stared at her for a moment before running at her and flinging itself at her in a Tackle!
