Zoe tilted her head a little, trying to drown out the talking with her own thoughts. Unfortunately, nothing was happening, and she was about to respond that she wasn’t whining when they began talking about trying to catch her. Did she suddenly fall into the Twilight Zone? What in the world was going on? Matt and Cleo were still not doing a thing, and she figured she was on her own, which was slightly disheartening. They sure abandoned her pretty quickly, that was for sure. They were once again mentioning who she assumed to be Matt, and wondered why they called her a Luxio.
“You can’t capture me, I’m a human! Don’t be ridiculous!”
She pulled Snugg’s ball off her belt and laid down the Poochyena carefully. Arching a brow, she tossed the ball down beside him and held her breath. Grinning as the ball opened up and Snugga began to glow in addition to the ball glowing, Zoe watched as it disappeared into the ball just like Mimic had done before. It was no time to cheer, so she snatched the ball up, and attached it to her belt. Her peripheral vision caught sight of one of the Espeon slinking towards her, and she carefully picked up a stick. Just as it leapt towards her, she released an ear piercing scream and jumped backwards. Her hand swung around as she jumped, intending on slamming the stick into the catlike face.
“I’m not something to be captured!”

The second Espeon leapt as she started to brandish the stick, its jaw clamping down over the wood with the intention of ripping it free of Zoe's hand. For being a slender creature, it was rather heavy, and any attempt at holding to the stick would result in Zoe being jerked around.
Just as the Espeon was about to collide with Zoe, a blue beam of what looked like bubbles struck it and knocked it aside and away. It called out unhappily. "Espeon!!!"
"GOTHORITA!" The twin Gothorita shrilled together.
"Good, Tux! Simba, use Roar!" Cleo's voice rang out. There was suddenly a roaring sound like a Lion would make and the two Gothorita made distressed noises and turned with their Espeons, disappearing into the bushes making distressed and unhappy shrills.
Cleo looked about as happy as a Fire Pokemon in a Flood. She stared coldly after the Gothorita pair before she turned and looked at Zoe.
"Are you through throwing a tantrum, or would you like me to leave you out here for a while?" She seemed rather angry. There was another Gothorita standing beside her with bright blue bows instead of white or purple, while her Luxio and her Prinplup stood at her other side and right in front of her, respectively. Clearly the Gothorita had been the Pokemon who'd been key to finding Zoe.
"Look. You just had your first loss. I get it. I do. I've been there. Tuxedo and Simba had to watch me lose for the first time. You know what? Get over it." Cleo took a few steps forward and reached, clearly trying to grab at the front of Zoe's clothes and shake her. "You're one of hundreds. You may make it. You may not make it. But you owe it to yourself not to be a stupid little twit. The only person you're hurting is you...and maybe your Pokemon, until you meet up with someone who Plays for Pokemon and steals them from you."
"Rita!" The Gothorita called. Cleo turned away from Zoe and looked at the Gothorita for a moment as if listening, and then she nodded and turned to look at Zoe.
"Come on, before those two Gothorita come back and bring friends." Cleo shook her head in disgust. "Word of advice? Stop flipping out every time your feelers get hurt. You look nutso. I should know. I used to have friends. Now my only friend is Professor Mahogany because I drove everyone who'd've been my friends in the beginning off...and anyone I meet now just wants to know my secrets because I have strong Pokemon and four badges."
Cleo laughed without any humor in her voice. "And if you ever meet Professor Mahogany...you'll understand what I mean when I say that he's probably not the best friend in the world. He's pricklier than I used to be." She walked towards the fire, her voice dull. "You don't have to pay attention to me. You probably hazed out half of what I just said, for all I know. You know what? I don't care. I tried to talk to you. If you didn't listen...that's your problem. After tonight, you probably won't see me again."

Squeaking as the second catlike clamped down on the stick, Zoe immediately let go of it, not really wanting a hand full of splinters. Preparing for the collision, the teenager braced herself and when nothing occurred, squeezed open her eyes. Staring at what reminded her of bubbles in a bath, she shifted her gaze behind the shrieking Gothorita and spotted Cleo and her Pokemon. Rubbing her eyes, she tried to figure out how the other trainer got there. Confusion was evident on her young face, but that wasn’t the only thing present. No, she was more than grateful for being rescued and stood all the way up as the four Pokemon rushed off. The happy look vanished within seconds at the look on Cleo’s face and for the millionth time, Zoe felt unwanted.
Peering at the twin Gothorita’s beside her, she studied them for a moment before glancing at the rest of Cleo’s Pokemon. Returning her full attention to Cleo was the obviously angry female continued, Zoe felt herself shrinking back a little bit with each word. When she was shaken slightly, she came to realize just how stupid she was being, and that she deserved whatever she got. However, she didn’t want to be this way anymore, and the thought of losing any of her precious Pokemon made her absolutely sick to her stomach. Remaining silently, Zoe followed behind Cleo, heading back to the fire. She knew that the girl was right, and she really wanted a do over, but that wasn’t likely to happen. After she was sure Cleo was finished, Zoe stepped up beside her and sighed softly before speaking.
“Look, I owe you an apology. I do want to listen to you, and I listened to everything you just said. You’re right that I need to stop acting childish when I don’t get my way… and that I shouldn’t be all boohoo just because my feelings have been hurt. You and Matt have been nothing but nice to me, and neither of you have to give me the night of day… or whatever the phrase is. I don’t just want to know your secrets. I want companionship and some pointers when I’m doing something that’s not right. I don’t know any strategies and I don’t want to use you or Matt. I just want to be friends… and maybe hang out or something. I really, really, really, am sorry for everything. You didn’t have to come save me, but I appreciate it, I really do. Will you still please help me when we get to Ashmere? I would really appreciate it. From this point on, no more spacing out, except at night when the stars are out or something.”

Cleo sighed. "I'm not going to Ashmere with you. I'm on my way in the other direction, to Professor Mahogany's." She reminded quietly. She reached into her pack and began to pull out the different types of Pokemon food. She held them up to make sure Zoe got a good look at the labels.
"This one is really good for Canines. It gives them all of the nutrients they need that they would normally get from wild meat. You can give your Pokemon people food, but I don't really recommend it. Some Pokemon will get hungry and think they can steal food from anyone who has food."
One by one, Cleo went through the food in her bag. It wasn't completely interesting, but it was also a test to see if Zoe meant it when she said she wanted to change. Matt sat nearby watching levelly, his face blank.
"I think that about covers it...and the stew should be ready to eat now." Cleo grinned. "Quick quiz, Zoe. What kind of Pokemon would you use against a bug Pokemon?" Flying types were, of course, strong against bug types. That was one of the many things that Cleo had gone over in her discussion with Zoe, although she'd made it oddly interesting and used specific examples as much as possible.

Zoe realized that it was night and the stars were out, but now wasn’t the time to day-dream or night-dream, whatever the saying was. No, now was the time to soak up everything that was offered to her like a good sponge. When Cleo reminded her that she wasn’t going to Ashmere, but the other way, Zoe silently berated herself. Stupid idiot, you really need to listen closely to everything from this moment on. Scooting beside Cleo as she began to pull out the different types of Pokemon food, Zoe watched closely, studying the labels. At the mention of not giving the Pokemon people food, her face turned a little pink since she fed both Snugga and JuJu some meat. Hopefully that wouldn’t do any lasting damage on their urge to steal food from whoever they came across. If it did, she was going to be doing a lot of apologizing.
Luckily when she applied herself, she had a nearly photogenic mind, and would remember all of the different labels, even when she got to Ashmere. She also was busy filing away the other things that Cleo had that she hadn’t picked up in addition to the unnecessary crap she thought she would need. There would be some purging done, that was for sure. Sitting down on a stump, she slid her pack off, placing it beside her for safe keeping. When Cleo decided to quiz her, she grinned and couldn’t wait to show that she was listening the whole time and was actually absorbing what had been said.
“There are several different types of Pokemon one could use to battle a bug – uck – Pokemon. Flying Pokemon such as Pidgeotto can be useful. Another type that could be used to battle a bug Pokemon are fire type Pokemon such as a Charizard. Also, Rock type Pokemon such as Onix can be used too. There of course are many more types of flying and fire and some flying Pokemon are also fire Pokemon and some flying Pokemon are indeed Bug Pokemon. Am I right…? I’m pretty sure I’m right.”

"Right." Cleo grinned and nodded. "You're on the right track. Look, the most important thing is that you have to want this, Zoe." Cleo handed Zoe a bowl and a spoon. "You'll hear some people give you some hogwash about how you do all of the work and the Pokemon do nothing. You'll hear some other people say that the Pokemon do all of the work and you just shout orders. Neither of those is true."
Cleo looked at Simba and Tuxedo and smiled. "Simba and Tuxedo have never been back in their Pokeballs since I got them. They're my best friends. My partners. Without me, they'd be just any other Pokemon. Without them, I wouldn't be the trainer I am. A trainer/Pokemon team is only complete if both sides want the victory with all of their heart."
"Luxio!" Simba said, yawning.
Cleo looked back at Zoe. "You have to want to win. Your Pokemon will love you, they'll want to win the fight for you...you need to want to win for you and for them. Doubly for them, because they're selfless and won't think of themselves."

Zoe pumped her fist into the air when Cleo indicated she was right. For her, this was a huge step and made her realize that she could really do this. Once she remembered what Pokemon would be best to fight the other, then maybe she wouldn’t tire out her babies so much. Taking the bowl and spoon, Zoe nommed on it while continuing to listen to Cleo. She realized that at one point she thought that the Pokemon did all the work, and wanted to make it so that they were equal partners. She already loved her Pokemon, well JuJu and Snugga more than Mimic because she just got Mimic, but she wanted to be the type of trainer that was like Cleo. She wanted to have a loving friendship-type relationship with her Pokemon. Something deep down in her made it clear she wanted to win. She wanted to do it not for herself, but for her Pokemon.
“Thanks for the stew, by the way. You’re right Cleo… you’ve made me realize that doing this halfheartedly will not only hurt me, but more importantly, will cause despair upon my Pokemon. I don’t want that to happen. I want them to love me and trust me and I them. I want to be like you and Matt, but with my own zanzy Zoe flair. When I fought you earlier, what Pokemon should I have used? I don’t think any of my Pokemon would have been good against Flame. So, what happens if that’s the case or am I overlooking something?”

"If you don't have a Pokemon that would be good against a specific type, you have to fight a tactician's battle. Use maneuvars that distract or lower your opponent's ability to attack or be accurate. You did well lowering Flame's defense earlier, but you need to make sure you have the oomph to follow it up with a strong attack. Your Pichu was tired, and had already been in two battles. What you could have done was use one of your potions on the Chatot Matt was telling me about and tried using him." Cleo shrugged.
"It's a hard call to make, but sometimes you also have to take the lost. Remember that you're just starting. Most trainers you face will be really friendly and helpful about teaching you."
"The most important thing there is to make sure that you don't throw their efforts back in their face," Matt chimed in. "Sometimes, giving you good advice will include telling you something that may hurt your feelings or that you disagree with."

“Oooh, that makes a lot of sense. Is there ever a time where two Pokemon are used at once to combat a trainer with a stronger Pokemon? I just don’t want to make anymore mistakes.”
Zoe caught on to the meaning behind Matt’s comment and felt terrible for throwing back their efforts into their face. She was going to make it point to always be grateful to anyone that was willing to give her pointers and try to keep from crying when she was criticized or when she lost. If she faced a mean trainer, well, then she would just hold her ground and not let the girl or boy get the best of her. Nomming more on the stew, she nodded her head, to show that she was listening to the two of them.
“I gotcha… So, you mentioned that trainers can battle for Pokemon… does that happen a lot?”

Cleo fell silent for a while as she ate, not answering Zoe's question right away. She looked at Simba and Tuxedo, and then she sighed. After another bite, she looked at Zoe.
"It doesn't happen a lot, and if any of the league officials in other regions catch someone doing it they'll lose their trainer license...but when does that ever stop everyone? And it's tempting. If you can win the battle, you can get one of their Pokemon and sometimes they have one that you really want. But if you lose...you lose one of your partners. They're gone, lost to you forever. You have to live with the knowledge that you took that risk...that you're the reason they're gone."
Cleo sighed and laid her head back, staring at the stars for a moment. "I used to travel with someone. They were...amazing. I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm good, and my Pokemon and I have earned my badges but...I mean this person was just...outstanding. Best trainer I've ever seen, and I don't say that lightly." Her lovely face was sorrowful as she thought about whomever it had been. Clearly whoever it was, they meant a great deal to the older girl. "They got into a battle...at first it was just a normal battle, you know, but..."
Cleo took another bite. She chewed, swallowed, and took a drink of water. Then she began to speak again, slowly, "They upped the stakes. Small things, first. You know...a few dollars here, a few dollars there. Then items. Then finally...it was suggested. Pokemon. They'd battle for Pokemon. Why not, they were evenly matched...so far they were tied up and they only had one Pokemon on their belts left."
"Luxio." Simba seemed especially tuned into his trainer's distress, because he moved up beside her and pressed close to her while Tuxedo napped behind him. It was clear that the Luxio had been Cleo's first Pokemon, back when he'd been a little Shinx.
"It took a long time. Both trainers put their hearts and souls into it. In the end...all it came down to was that the other trainer had one more potion. One potion that had been taken in an earlier match. My friend lost." She didn't say what had happened to the friend...that he'd quit training, given his Pokemon away, and went home to a dull life that he wasn't meant to live...but it was implied. Cleo sighed and shrugged. "It wasn't that long ago...maybe six months, tops. Prydein itself is fairly new, you know...the league's only been here for like two years, tops."
"The league is really new here." Matt agreed. "They're still getting established. I haven't heard one way or the other on whether the league's enforcing everything yet. I do know that Pokeballs are registered to the trainer they're issued to, so that you have to trade through the official routes, but I've heard that there are ways around it. Never seen them first hand, though."

When Cleo didn’t answer immediately, Zoe thought she had asked a forbidden question or something. Chewing silently, Star glanced from Matt to Cleo and back again. The silence was a little unnerving, and she welcomed the sigh that soon came from Cleo. Shifting her full attention to Cleo, she listened silently to her as she explained that it was against league rules, but that it still happened. About to ask another question, Zoe instead ate more of the stew as Cleo began talking about someone that Zoe figured was a very good friend. The tale was so sad, and also a grave reminder that it was fairly easy to lose everything in a bet.
Alright, note to self – don’t do any betting especially when it comes to Pokemon. That’s bad juju.
She didn’t even snicker at her mental joke because she was too busy listening to the older female continue to talk about what happened to her friend. It wasn’t just the words coming out of her mouth, but the emotion that was evident behind them. It was extremely touching and Zoe admired how connected she was with her Pokemon. Putting down the now empty bowl, she arched her brow when it was mentioned that Prydein and the league was so new. Now that she thought about it, that made a lot of sense, and she wondered if she would have gone out at an earlier age if the league would have been around. Matt’s voice caught her attention and she mused a bit about the fact that Pokeballs are registered to the trainer their issued to. Did that just mean starter Pokeballs? Only one way to find out…
“Does that mean starter Pokeballs are registered or any Pokeball a trainer purchases? Also, Cleo, I’m sorry about your friend. I’ve learned so much just in the last however long it’s been since you saved my butt.”

"It's been a long time since I thought about him," Cleo admitted, sighing. "Maybe I'll go see him after I stop in to see Professor Mahogany." She shrugged, looking sad.
"To answer your question," Matt said, letting Cleo have her moment of sorrow and drawing Zoe's attention back to him. "Every Pokeball is registered. You'll have to show your license to the shop to buy more, and those Pokeballs will be registered to you, too. EVERY Pokeball issued, whether it's when you originally get your Pokemon or not."
"Right, and any trainer who tries to use a Pokeball not issued to their License Number to heal a Pokemon at a Pokemon Center, or to fight in any kind of Gym battle is disqualified and subject to an inquery. They'll have to prove that they acquired the Pokeball through honest means. Usually it's just because two trainers do a straight trade instead of trading through official channels so most of them are cleared, but it's easier to trade through official channels, and smarter in the long run to be honest." Cleo shrugged.
"When you trade through the League's official trading center, they trade the Pokemon in the Pokeballs or the Pokeballs' registration numbers in the Trainer's PC database. They can also keep track of which Pokeballs explode, rumor has it."

Zoe felt a little awkward due to how sad Cleo looked. She supposed that if she had a really good friend and had lost track of him or her, she would be pretty sad as well. Maybe it would be good for Cleo to visit her friend, hopefully he was doing well. Matt piped up at last, and Star shifted her attention towards him with slight scrunch of her nose. The way he put it made a lot of sense, and she couldn’t believe just how organized the league truly was. It was actually a pretty awesome thing and the fact that she was going to be a part of it made her feel proud.
Cleo continued on and Zoe moved her gaze towards the older female, determined to listen to everything the two of them had to say. It was as if she had a different outlook on things, and was showing a completely different side. The side of her that was almost always present whenever she was with friends and not in school. The way the two of them talked about the different aspects of training made it interesting, which made it easier to pay attention to. She was quite proud of how well she was doing.
“Why would someone want to trade Pokemon though? Don’t you get a bond with your Pokemon, and that would make it harder to trade them, wouldn’t it? I couldn’t imagine trading any of my goobers.”

"It can be hard sometimes, yes, but if someone has a rare Pokemon that you would really like, and they want one of your Pokemon in return, then it's up to you." Matt shrugged. "People don't just trade on a whim, Zoe. It needs to be well thought out. Things like whether or not you're battling the Pokemon they would like to trade you for need to be considered. Some Pokemon are content relaxing in your PC, but others are made for battle...for action. If you're not using them as often as you feel they need, then they may be more happy with someone else who may battle with them more. You can only carry so many Pokemon at one time."
He had a feeling that she'd missed that memo in classes, so he stifled a sigh and an eye-roll and explained. "A trainer may only carry nine Pokemon with them at one time, Zoe. The rest are transferred to your PC and you can trade them out at any Pokemon Center along your path. But what that means is that you have to be strategic at deciding which ones you keep with you, so you may or may not use all of your Pokemon in battle."
"Which means that if someone comes along who may use them more often in battle than you do, it would be selfish to keep them with you just because of your bond. Especially if the Pokemon they're offering in trade may be one that you use more often. Trainers tend to prefer different types, too. My Pokemon team is fairly balanced...I have a number of different types of Pokemon with me so that I can face any type that comes at me without difficulty," Cleo added.
"You've seen my current Fire, Water, Electric, and Psychic types. I also have a Lucario with me, and she's a combined Fighting and Steel type. My Deerling is a combined Grass and Normal type Pokemon, Sandile is ground and Dark, Shuppet is a ghost, and Staravia is a flying type." She touched each Pokeball as she did. Not all of them were normal Pokeballs, either. The Pokeball that held Lucario was a Great Ball, the Deerling was in a Heal Ball, and so forth and so on.
"But some people have only one specific type of Pokemon. Most of the Gym leaders you'll battle will use only one type of Pokemon. It's to your advantage to do your homework about each Gym Leader and his or her preferences before you battle them," Matt said. "That way, you can prepare and strengthen the specific Pokemon you'll need to fight them."
"And Some people will try to just bull their way through with their Pokemon no matter what type they're facing. Although they can struggle through, it isn't recommended." Cleo shrugged nonchalantly and glanced at the sky. "And for me...I think it's time to sleep. I suggest you two do the same. You still have about an hour's walk in the morning to get to Ashmere. I'd use that Revive I gave you earlier now, if I were you...otherwise your Pichu won't be in fighting shape tomorrow."

ooc: You may either continue this thread into the next day or move your character into Ashmere assuming that you made the rest of the journey the next day with Matt relatively unharmed. The down side of this is that you will not have any further opportunity to catch a pokemon.
Also, you'll notice that before I called what she gave you a full heal, not a revive. That was my blonde moment. It was a revive, as it revives fainted Pokemon. Full Heals restore from any status effect but will not revive them from a faint...revive is the only thing that does that. It will also restore only half of the Pokemon's HP. You will need to use it before Zoe sleeps or JuJuBeans will only regain half of his HP in the morning.
