One of Revells timely re-issues of a big scale WWI aircraft ....the other being the Spad.
As you all know I have an aversion to WWI aircraft and especially rigging ....but ....I like the look of this and its got a decal option for a 45 Squadron aircraft ( a former Tornado squadron whos badge is a winged camel which commemorates the squadrons use of the Sopwith Camel :D ) the other being the very brightly painted 10 Sqn kite as shown on the box art.

Heres a link to the in box review .... In Box Review

For a big scale kit , though admittedly a small aircraft , there are not a great deal of parts.
Almost all of the parts are showing a bit of flash on them which is no surprise as a quick look over on Scalemates has this being first released in 1959 !!
A look under the stabs show a date of 1981 which was the year of its 9th reissue.
So how does it go together.....quite well actually !

Starting at stage 1 and 2 we have the first of a few stages that show where and how much thread is needed for the rigging (a spool of thread is included in the kit but I will be using Aeroclub Lycra thread near to the end of the build).
The cockpit is quite basic for a large kit , chair , stick , control panel , rudder pedals and the engine exhaust but Im sure someone who knows better than me about WWI era aircraft could add a lot of extra detail.
There is no colour call out for the interior so I opted for a Wood type colour ......should of maybe been a linen colour ....check your references , I didnt ...ooops !

I fitted most of the cockpit parts to the right fuselage half but fitted the instrument panel to the left side as this has a more positive fixing location for it.
There is a decal option for the panel ....this is not shown very clearly on the instruction sheet in stage 4 ( just a "?" is shown but no mention of the decal ! )
You need to sand off the raised detail on the instrument panel before adding the decal which is actually quite effective .

Back to the pit.....Make sure that part no 9 is facing the correct way with the hole at the front , that is where the prop shaft (part 16) will fit later.

Posted Image

I closed up the fuselage with everything added and the fit was quite good ...a bit of filler is required but not a lot .

Stage 7....I attached part 16 to the forward bulkhead (part 18) and then attached to the main fuselage. I just sanded the join and no filler needed.

I then built up the engine ....not a bad representation and with some dry brushing it looks good although once the front cowl (part 26 ) is added a lot of detail is hidden.

Posted Image

Ive added the top part of the front fuselage ...part 24 .
At the end of the first session , about a couple of hours we have this.....

More soon.

Great start Andy.
It will be interesting to see how well this old kit goes together.

Lower wing was added. It will need a swipe of filler along the lower front and rear leading edges where it meets the fuselage......quite acceptable for a kit of this vintage.
There are a couple of ejector pin marks that need filling on the upper surface but no major problems :)
I fitted the one piece tail-planes to the top of the rear fuselage , fit was OK but when I tried to fit the tail/rudder it left a large gap between the tail and the tail-planes .
I found that removing the lugs on the tail/rudder gave a much better fit .

:P :P :P

Thought I would dry fit the wings to see how it goes and if there are any problems.

There seems to be no problems with the fit BUT with the wings on this model is quite heavy ....I really do worry that the wheel strut assembly will not be able to take the weight of the aircraft. :hmm:
Ill have to have a think about what to do to strengthen the struts .

Not bad for a 55 year old (!) kit.

Goes together better than a few "modern " kits Ive built recently :)
Quite often you buy a kit in a nice new shiny box .....open it up and find an ancient kit that should of been retired 20 years ago.....for example Revell 1/72 Ta-152 :X
This IS an ancient kit but well worthy of re-issuing :thumb:
Im loving building it ....my God Im even looking FORWARD to rigging it .....must lay down , I cant be feeling well....
I can honestly say that even though Ive not finished the review I would wholeheartedly recommend it

Its been a month since I last posted ..oops ! :$

I primed the build using Halfords Grey primer , sanded it back a bit and then started to do a bit of painting...no airbrush for this one ....long live the Hairy Stick :)
Front end was painted Hu 70 Brick red , looks close enough for me to the original.
Once that had dried I painted the rest of the fuselage and the wing upper surfaces with the colour Revell recommend which is Revell Aqua 46 Nato Olive.
I then dry brushed a slightly darkened version of this over the ribs to give a bit of a weathered look.

While all this was drying off I made up the two machine guns which are made up of two halves each....I found I got a better fit by removing the locating pins as they cause the two halves to misalign .

Used Revell Aqua 314 , Beige for the wing and fuselage lower surfaces , again all hand brushed.

Im having a think on what reinforcement I can use for the wheel strut assembly as I very much doubt it will be strong enough to support the weight of the body/wings.

Another update....

The two Vickers MGs finished ....painted Anthracite (Aqua 9) and dry brushed with Silver .

Now for a bit of artistic license shall we say......that wheel strut assembly needed some support so out with the alu tubing and hey presto....
Just dry fitted for now.

Very simple job in the end as both locating holes are already drilled out on the parts...was there supposed to be an actual part ??

Next job was to paint the prop and the wheel assembly so out with some dark brown paint , ironic I know but I used Xtracrylix RLM 81 Dark Brown as a base then added Hu 29 Dark Earth and Aqua 82 Brown for the various shades to get a wood effect.

Just about to glue the wheel struts to the main fuselage and then I'll Klear it ready for the decals :)

Nice progress Andy, looking good. The strength of the undercart looks like something I'll need to think about for my own build. The aircraft should really have a split axle with the wheels splayed out by the weight but it looks like that can't be depicted using the kit parts. Where you've put the extra strut, the real aircraft has a piece of wire (brake cable?), hence the pre-drilled holes in the kit parts.

Lol.

99% of the rigging done and I must say I enjoyed doing it even though this is my first real attempt at doing a fully rigged aircraft .
Aeroclub thread makes the job easy peasy ...recommended 110% .

Next job was to attach the upper wing.
A few dry fits had shown that this would be a rather tricky part of the build due to the not so great fit of the struts due to alignment problems.
Strangely enough when I did eventually glue the wing , using 5 min Epoxy resin and plenty of masking tape to hold it all together , it was a lot easier to do than when I dry fitted it !!
Ill leave it overnight to fully harden .

While this is drying Ive made up the Ground Crew ....quite nicely detailed and will add a sense of scale.....the aircraft is tiny compared to even a Spity .
