Build Review, SMS Dresden & SMS Emden German WWI Light Cruisers
Revell 05500

I was fortunate to be sent this kit for review but had to clear some space before starting,

Jacksdad did an in box review which can be found Here

My first surprise when I opened the box is that when considering to buy the kit some time back I thought you could build either ships, but no, Revell supplies two full kits, one for each.

The ships are very similar, from initial inspection the differences are the Dresden has four screws and Emden two, there are some detail differences on the funnel. The differences are catered for on one runner. Make sure you match up the kits to the relevant instructions.

To reduce the picture loading of the review, I will show one picture for both ships if the build is the same for both.

On to the build which stats by adding some walls to the structure:

Then the bridge area (apologies for the lack of sharpness on this one)

Then some of the guns. It took me a while to spot the difference, but if you notice there is a ridge on the base of the two guns that’s not on the four.

Posted Image

Now the funnels and you may spot the piping on the sides is different.

Now I’ve gone a little out of sequence because next I put the hulls together.

Posted Image

The reason being that various gubbins should be attached to the deck after the funnel construction whereas I will be doing some painting before I attach everything.

And the two hulls with the deck dry fitted to ensure everything lines up.

You may just spot the difference to the propulsion area where either two or four shafts have to be fitted.

That’s what I've done this evening, I'll try and get some paint on tomorrow.

Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers.

Nice one, John. These old ships are great.

Just starting to get back into them Paddy, I'm going for the light and cream scheme for the Emden just for a little contrast and to make life easier ( ).

The hull seams needed a little attention and there were a couple of sink marks where the locating tabs are.

So an attempt was made to sort them followed by the first coat of Hu 60, a couple more required I think as it is quite translucent.

Thanks, really quite impressed with these two. With Hu60 being a bit opaque I’ve applied a few extra coats over the filler on the hull as it was showing through the paint, hopefully the next full coat will sort it.

The deck has started to be painted but what’s done all needs second coats to give it a more even finish.

Painting progresses and I’m definitely doing the Emden in the lighter colours otherwise they are going to be virtually identical:

They look very smart and look to be a lot bigger than I thought they would.

Pulled these out the other day and made some progress. Well on the Dresden I have. The Emden is back in dry dock as she received a coat of the wrong colour on the hull.

Some touching up required and I've only just fitted the prop shafts so they need painting as well.
