Hey everyone and here's my latest build which is my first KUTA also. The kit is Revell's F-14D Super Tomcat - i started her a couple of years back for a Tomcat GB and at some stage thought it would be a good idea to build it in the catapult launch position. After much plastic hacking, she was relegated to the shelf of doom. (not really a shelf but a box with my other kits) ![]() Anyhow, fast forward a couple of years and I started building a lot more Tomcats - she will be number four in the last 12 months. So I decided to resurrect her and give her the proper attention she deserves. First up, remove the wing sealing bladders and replace with a 'fuller' one appropriate for the wings in forward sweep - these are spares from a Hasegawa kit. ![]() ![]() I also needed to reinstate the speedbrake which i originally hacked out....don't ask why!!! ![]() Cockpit starting to come together - the crew are from the spares box.. ![]() And the fuselage is coming together too. ![]() You'll note that the wings in the background had been unfairly attacked before - so need to give them some repairs as well. The kit will be finished as the CAG aircraft from the last cruise of VF-2 'Bounty Hunters' in the Persian Gulf and ops over Iraq. Decals will be from a Hobby Boss kit and suitable stores from a Weapons Set. ![]() (Image courtesy Wikimedia Commons - public domain/no copyright) Thanks for looking. Thanks everyone and here's the latest on this one.. Started with decals on the tails - I always find it easier to do these when they're off the a/c. The decals are meant for the Hobby Boss kit so don't fit perfectly but are good enough for the scale...and my own standards! ![]() The wings also got their decals and a wash...before/during ![]() And after... ![]() Being a Tomcat, the wing sweep areas usually pick up some grime so started on that too with some thinned Revell acrylics....still a work in progress and needs more subtlety.. ![]() Fuselage is getting there too. I mixed all the TPS colours according to Revell's own instructions but have to admit it's a pain and too hit or miss - maybe I added 15% white instead of 10%?! C'Mon Revell - give us TPS colours that we can brush/spray right on and don't need mixing - i'll buy lots of them!! ![]() Thanks for looking. Dermot |

Cheers Andy. Next up with this is masking the black section of the nose and canopy.. ![]() A couple of brush coats of Revell Schwarz Black ![]() Masking removed and pretty happy with that - a couple of minor leaks but nothing that can't be fixed. ![]() And now ready for some decals! ![]() All the best, Dermot |

So go the decals finished on this one last night - these are from the Hobby Boss F-14D though I did use some of the original kit decals for the slime lights, etc. Thankfully, not to many stencils either!![]() Next up, wash and final weathering! Thanks for looking. Dermot |

So got most of the weathering done on this one. Started with an all over wash....![]() And after it was wiped off. I also tried to add some paint touch-ups like the do in reality. Kinda hard to see as it's grey on grey.. ![]() And then with the landing gear added - the compressed nose gear is from a Hobby Boss kit and needed a little trimming to fit the Revell kit. Main u/c are from the kit itself. ![]() Still need to clean up the nose wash a bit more. Also, the nose probe is a homemade metal replacement for the kit plastic piece which snapped off and was swallowed by the carpet monster. It's not the most perfect but good enough for the scale I think. Overall, I think the panel lines are a little heavy for the scale (which the wash really shows) but I'm having fun with this and liking how it's coming along. Thanks for looking, Dermot |

So this build is almost ready to ride the catapult....![]() ![]() Can't believe how far it's come with a bit of effort - not my greatest build but am really happy with it....which is the main thing really! Will post some better pictures at the weekend. All the best, Dermot Edited by DermotMo, Jan 30 2015, 02:24 PM.
