To get the mojo back on track I opened up the recently re-issued 1/72 DeHaviland Twin Otter , a kit originally released by Matchbox and has been quite sought after so this blue box release is very welcome .

This boxing has parts for 4 versions ;

  • Normal wheeled undercarriage / blunt nose
  • Normal wheeled undercarriage / long nose
  • Floats
  • Skis

Note ...only two decal options are included a CAF DHC-6 with wheeled u/c and a civilian float equipped Twin Otter.

Instructions PDF

On the sprues we have , unusually for a Matchbox kit , quite fine recessed detail (no trenches ! ) and raised detail on the 96 parts.

The build
Building started with the cockpit which is quite basic but not much can be made out through the transparencies.
A cockpit floor , two seats , control column and instrument panel are added to one side of the fuselage and also two bulkheads and a basic overhead control panel.
I painted the interior Vallejo Light Grey , added the passenger windows and the cockpit side windows using white PVA glue and then closed everything up.
A bit of filler was needed along the top join but otherwise the fit was quite good for a kit over 30 years old  ......first issued by Matchbox as PK-127 in 1983
The blunt nose was added and inside this I placed 20 grams of nose weight (seems to be enough).
I added the two side u/c leg supports and then added the wings and the wing to u/c strut....fit here was very positive although the wing to fuselage join needed filler or , as I did , some thick gap filling C.A (super glue).
6 flap actuators and a wing fence are added to both wings .
I then added the rear stabilisers and fit again was not perfect but again a touch of filler was all that was needed.
Ive added the front windscreen which was a bit fiddly to fit and I had to fish it out of the cockpit a couple of times before I managed to get it into place.
Whilst fighting with the front window I accidentally pushed in one of the side windows :fp: ....10 minutes later it was back in position....phew ! ..... so beware !Make sure they are firmly glued into position before closing the fuselage up :)
The engine nacelles where added and these needed a fair amount of filler and sanding to blend into the wing.

So after a few hours we now have some thing that looks like this ....

Just need to smooth the upper seam line a bit more , mask off the windows and then its ready for paint ......just a few hours work needed.

Wonderful job, so far, Andy.
There is just something pleasing about the old Matchbox kits.

On a visit to Coventry airport I found myself standing next to two of these birds belonging to the British Arctic Survey and was struck as to how large they seemed. Notwithstanding the straight wing, a very elegant looking aeroplane - of course, it's a DH! Are you doing the Canadian rescue scheme, that yellow finish would be right lush?

No photos tonight but just a quick update .....primer on and it showed that the fuselage seam needed some filler so filler applied and sanded .
Ready for a re-prime tomorrow if I get chance ( its Mrs DH764's birthday :) )

I think you'll find that re-priming a model is the perfect surprise birthday present for anyone.
Let us know how you get on with that - when you wake up.

Well I had a bit of a disaster with this ......I primed it and then I attempted to airbrush Xtracrylix RLM Yellow and I just could not get the right mix/pressure setting so the paint ran all over ....had to strip everything off .
Airbrush gear put away and back to enjoying modelling as I used to do when i brush painted.

Humbrol No3 brush and Vallejo Model color Matt Yellow added.....not perfect but Im not a perfectionist :D
Its a bit rough due to the strip down but it certainly looks a lot more Yellow now

Seriously thinking of going back to brush painting ....sick of all the fussing about with mixing , pressures and cleaning up . :hmm:

Yellow is not an easy colour to apply. Acrylics (especially) need to be airbrushed at the lowest possible pressure. I tend to go for well thinned paint, then use the rule of thumb for achieving lowest pressure - turn down the compressor until the paint sputters, then back up just enough to get it flowing normally. Matt acrylic should set almost instantly, gloss needs to go on just a little 'wet'.

More painting done today ....certainly is a very colourful and attractive scheme

Unfortunately the early test flight off the modelling bench didnt go too well :slap: :fp: :$ :D

Nose wheel leg snapped in half and the axles for the main gear have gone too.....a few bits of fuse wire for the main gear will solve that problem and luckily there is one side for the nose wheel to attach to .
This has been "one of those" builds up to now..... :box: .....fighting all the way ! :)

If it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing...

I've binned kits for less than this, so top marks for persevering Andy. :thumb:

Bummer. The red and yellow looks really neat, which reminds me I have a CL-415 to complete construction, then paint.

Decals on and sealed with Vallejo Satin varnish.

Conclusion

A great classic kit that just needs a little bit of filler here and there to produce a fine build.
All the problems I encountered where my own doing (the paint job !) .
I'm sure that with the options available in the box and some aftermarket decals you could build a whole airforce of this worldwide workhorse .
Recommended to all modellers young and old .

Many thanks to Revell for the review sample.
