I cant believe that Airfix or whoever it is in the paints Dept. think that Hu30 is correct
I think there was a post on ATF a while back about this and in the end it was decided that 116 for Matt and 163 for Satin finishes was the way to go.

That's the way to go, they're pretty much the same hue, the only real difference is one is matt the other satin finish. Recent instruction sheets have been moving away from Hu 30, but there are still ambiguities, for instance the 1/72 Spitfire I specifies Hu 163, whilst the Mk I/II kit says use Hu 30!

Just check the Airfix VC gift set and all 4 planes quote HU30 and that's what I used on the Revell Spit and Hurricane in the BOB set. I take it HU163 would be a more accurate shade for green on WWII RAF aircraft.

RAF Green, whether WWII or post war (AFAIK the spec for the paint is either identical or near identical for each period) is a brownish green, whereas Hu 30 is more blueish green. 116/163 is a near identical match to the MAP colour chip. This is hardly news, since articles in Scale Models magazine, for example, were pointing it out back in the seventies and eighties last century! In fact when you start looking in to it, it becomes clear that Hu 30 is hardly good for anything, yet Humbrol must have sold thousands of gallons of it over the years. I suppose a lot of it depends whether you suffer from colour OCD, or whether your philosophy is near enough is good enough. I certainly wouldn't think less of your Hurricane and Spitfire because they might have the 'wrong' green painted on them.

Wonder what the new RLM colours will be like.As for Hu30, well the HB1 DARK GREEN in the RAF Humbrol authentic camouflage colour kit looks a match with Hu116. But at the end of the day its down to what you are happy with.

Thanks for the " Hu and cry "..........however, I prefer not to get too tied up over "exact" matches...if it is a resonable representation then it works for me...

Relaxed in the Colonies Cheers,

Getting there slowly but surely....

All canopy painting done freehand....I usually would not recommend doing it that way but I couldnt bear the thought of masking all that glass :fp:

Lazybones. :jest:

To be honest I usually feel the same, but usually knuckle down, bite the bullet etc etc (insert your favourite cliche to taste). If the framing is well defined you can do it quite quickly by pasting on large pieces of tape, then score around the framing. If not so well defined then thin strips to mark out the edge of the framing and larger pieces to infill, or use liquid masking. For a scheme like this one where you only need one colour, then painted decal strips is a definite consideration. Glazing is often the focal point or points of the model, the viewers eye is likely to be drawn to it, so it's worth making taking a bit of time over it when painting.

If you're wondering does he practice what he preaches...

And the world record for the longest new kit review is broken....... :slap: :D

All the decals ....Ok most of the decals , some tiny stencils left off.....done .

Posted Image

a few minor glitches with the decals though
The squadron badge is too big to fit as shown on the instruction sheet.....it should be in-between the front canopy and nose glazing , the panel to the right of where it is now.

Posted Image

Not sure if this is a mistake or not.....I have seen the build that was reviewed in MAM and this had the same anomoly.......the side balkenkreuz are not in the same position on both sides of the fuselage :hmm:
Ive never seen a Luftwaffe aircraft with asymmetrically placed crosses but thats not to say it didnt happen or that Revell are wrong but it is unusual.

Hope to finish this soon.

Conclusion
This a top quality kit for not a lot of money.
Although there are a few very minor fit issues with the wing tips and the fuselage construction these are understandable due to the fact that several versions will be based on this tooling.....Battle of Britain A1 then Nightfighter next please Revell
This has been the most detailed 1/72nd scale kit Ive ever built , the cockpit is a kit in itself and just take a look at the "Continnental" wording on the tyres......amazing !!
I would whole heartedly recommend this kit to everyone except maybe an absolute beginner.
Thanks for watching :thumb:

The aerial lead ins should go into the little clear discs on the top of the fuselage, otherwise very impressive.
