Handley Page Halifax

Introduction
Please bear in mind when reading the below review that I am not someone who gets dividers and calculators out to compare models to scale plans. Firstly I don’t have any, and secondly I don’t have the inclination to do so. If you are of this disposition then all power to your elbow, and if you want to add any technical information or guidance as how to rectify any mistakes in the kit you may identify, please feel free to do so.

History
A medium bomber specification was drawn up by the British Air Ministry under specification P.13/36 for a twin engined bomber using  Rolls-Royce Vultures, Napier Sabres, the or Bristol Hercules engines.Amongst the submissions were the Avro Manchester which was later developed into the more well known Lancaster, and the H.P.56 which was developed into the four engined Halifax under specification B32/37 OR.44.

Thus the Handley Page Halifax was the second four engined heavy bomber to enter service with the RAF in November 1940, three months after the Short Stirling. It’s first operational sortie was against Le Harve on the night of 11th- 12th March 1941

In addition to it’s bombing role the plane was adapted and used as a glider tug, electronic warfare aircraft & special operations, they were also operated by RAF Coastal Command for anti submarine warfare, reconnaissance and meteorological roles.

In total 6,178 were built, 1,833 were lost and with RAF Bomber Command flew 82,773 missions dropping 224,207 tons of bombs.

The Kit
Revell had released the Matchbox version of the Halifax but this is a new tooling which is obvious when you look at the fine engraved panel lines and the level of interior detail. It comes on 12 sprues of light grey plastic and one of clear which together contain the 338 parts. No flash of any note was evident on initial inspection

When built the plane would measure 30.5cm x 41.7cm. Various option are available including the rounded tail planes and turreted from of the B.II Srs.I. or the square tailed, clear fronted B.Mk.II. Srs IA. Decal options are No.405 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, Topcliffe, England, July 1942 LQ-R (W7710) and No.58 Squadron, RAF, Stonoway, Scotland, early 1945, D (JP165).

Instructions come in 18 pages of A4 and construction is covered through 99 stages. The paper is of better quality then I have seen recently. Painting instructions are the standard Revell fare of lettered colour shouts referring back to revel paint numbers. The decals supplied appear to be of good quality and in register.

Through reading in other forums I believe that the propellers are wrong being if a paddle type when they should be more pointed.
Because of the number of pictures this may be too large and have to go over two posts.

Hi John , hope you dont mind but Ive moved this to the review section mate :thumb:

Thanks for sharing with us .....I was handling this kit at club night on Wednesday and thought it was superb.
The box by the way is huge .....its the same size as the 1/48th Eurofighter kits !
I think this will be be added to my credit card account because of those 58sqn markings

This looks great, the thought that does spring up is- what parts are in the "missing" sections of the current sprues? radial engines, Halton parts, the glider tug? I think we are in for a treat or two in the future.
Please Revell, make new kits for the Stirling, Warwick, Wellington and Whitley.

David.

The Halifax will have a great future (so I hope).
Some parts from the test moulds are missing, like the Z-nose.
But in the actually kit are more possibilities than in the colour schemes.

BTW, the Boeing B-17G has also a "secret model" in the kit.
