Old P-51D to be finished in Cuban Air Force colours. Kits a real dog but simple enough. If eBay comes good and other Group builds go to plan it might be followed up with a Cuban Mitchell.

Wheels will be replaced with Airfix New tool ones as Revell ones are terrible. Legs will need filling out a bit too, possibly replaced, not sure yet.

And so it begins, fuselage halves are different size and shape and have clearly been to different yoga classes.

Zipped up we attack with the filler. Underside intake has a blanking grille across it. Might build this out to a proper shape then drill it out. Likewise with the small intake under the spinner

Test fit of the wings show the gap...or rather chasm between wing and root. This will need to be filled with shaped plasticard. Thus in turn will give opportunity to add a floor so you can't see straight through to cockpit.

Looks like you have got your work cut out with this one, nice start though.

Wing joins filled with strip and plastic putty. Wheel wells built up with solid flat roofs this in turn gives cockpit a solid floor. Cockpit masked. Lines and rivets calmed down with 1500 grit. A smooth off with 3600 grit and a gentle wash down and its out with the Alclad.

First shot of Alclad. Polished aluminium overall. It's impressive stuff but by god it shows up imperfections. Model needs to be handled with rubber gloves and simply not touched before metal paint goes on, otherwise it shows up finger prints like NCIS team had just dusted for evidence. Any way we will see what transpires.

Ok the experimenting continues!! Some random panels left exposed and given dusting with Alclad chrome. First pic is with masking on. Second is masking on and a sprayed coat on underside. One snag I have found with Alclad is the cost. Bottles way bigger than usual manufacturers but it's ready thinned so in reality you're only getting a fraction of the paint and this stuff goes through the brush very very fast. Reckon for the two mustang I am currently building a fivers worth of Alclad has been used so far.

Masks off. There is a nice contrast between the two shades. The chrome is just another metal as it wasn't re primed with gloss black. A pleasing result if a little hotch potch as I am still learning with these paints.

I have to admit, being a naturally tight fisted git, I'd be loath to use Alclad on a kit like that old Revell Pony. OTOH, if you're experimenting with producing tones, then an old kit rather than something state of the art is probably the way to go.

Yes I am a bit of a tight wad myself. So I won't be alcladding too many kits. This one is a test shot for the Airfix one I am building in parallel for ATF mustang GB. Which in turn is a learning aid for my biggie... F-84 in 1:32 scale. It's finished bar the painting, been waiting for me to get up the nerve to break out the Alclad.
I will however use Alclad without hesitation for small things, exhausts, undercarriage etc etc. It's amazing stuff but like I now know, pricey. I suspect the F84 will take 15 quids worth of paint.

Looking good.

As you know I'm also watching your ATF mustang as I'm also going to spray mine with Alclad. I had thought of practising on an Airfix F80 Shooting Star until I realised that that was harder to find and more expensive than the new tool Mustang!

Layer of Klear on to avoid disasters that befell my Airfix build. Seems to have worked, everything crossed!! Ready for decals. This was never going to be a masterwork given the raw kit. Canopy fits well but it's that flaky edged clear plastic that never quite looks right. Interesting comparison between kit drop tanks and Airfix ones (which I will use). I stuck a kit One on and it looked enormous, comical even!

Looking good. Never used Alclad as it seemed to be a bit of a mare to work with, but I must say, looking at the way yours has turned out it may well be worth the effort and cost.

Alclad is a breeze to work with, just mist it on until you get the effect you're after.
