Ever since my first trip to Berlin, I have wanted to own one of these little beauties. For now I've settled for Revels latest tooling of what has to be a true icon of its time.

I'll dig out the box from the loft tomorrow, but for now here are some reference pictures :grins:

And no, I'm not doing a special scheme

And thanks to Carl for letting me push the boundaries on the group builds definition.

Cheers!!

We did a Trabi GB over at L & C a while ago. I bought the kit and got as far as opening the box! My favourite builds were the Krtek and Jagermeister, but this might give you some inspiration for the GB?

That safari Trabi looks pretty cool. I guess the classic Trabi look is slightly rusty, faded/flat paint with peeling trim.

I remember seeing one on display in an auto bhan caf in Germany. It was beside a Ferrari F-40 and a Porsche 959!!!!!! It was decked out in Castrol Rally colours and by the looks of it could have been converted for rallying, seemed beefed up everywhere. Is that possible, a rally Trabant.
Anyway, great choice of subject.... Gotta do the giraffe scheme!

Depending on which kit you have you could probably have bought a real one for the same price. :grins:

I nearly got one of these for the auto GB last year. I'll be watching this with interest and may just get one someday.

On the sprue it looks like a nice kit and I'm looking forward to building something a little bit different.

I'm going to play it very safe with the colour scheme. I've settled on what i can only describe as porridge grey.....

At first, our pic shows an original car. The colour is a very light green, nrarly to the lime green from the classic Mini Cooper.

Here is another one, a little bit different:

:o :o That lime green is amazing!!!

This kit is amazing the detail in the engine OOB is great. The engine was tackled in two stages. Here are the second set of parts in bare plastic being test fitted:

Here is what I'm hoping to achieve:

This is what I've got so far:

For the body colour I've used XF-55 Tamiya Deck Tan, its too dark but I think I can get away with for the engine bay.

The engine has been painted in XF-1 Flat black and a mix of Gunze Sangyo Buffable Metallic Paints and Citadel paints.

Great start, and a cool looking engine. Can the bonnet be attached so that it can be lifted up?

It's been a long time since I've been able to do any modelling, but I'm back :yipee:

I'm still note sure I've got the colour spot on (the photographs make it look a bit more yellow) but I've settled on Vallejo Pale Sand.

Its the first time I've used this paint in an airbrush. My first attempt using Tamiya thinners was a disaster, the paint spat.... a lot.

After I switched to Vallejo's own thinner (about 50:50 mix) it worked a dream.

The finish is very matt, but a few coats of varnish should sort that out.

The kit captures the look of the car perfectly.

I've also done a bit of work on the interior and chrome parts, using a mix of Mr Color buffable metallic paints and Tamiya Red Brown XF-64.

A small update today:

I've weathered the wheels and tyres with a black pigment, but I forgot to take a picture of this.

I've also started to assemble the interior.

I've also dipped the clear parts and left them to one side to dry.

Tomorrow, fingers crossed, I'll have the exterior gloss coated and I'll be on the home straight by the weekend.
