This is another of Revells re-boxing of Mobius Models kits, and this one is a beast!! When built is over a meter long (106.7cm) and is classed as a skill level 5 kits despite having not that many parts, i suspect the skill is in the painting

The USS Skipjack (SSN-585) was the first US Navy nuclear attack submarine with a hydro-dynamically optimized tear-drop shape. The hull was a single pressure hull with circular cross-section made of high strength HY-80 steel. A visual feature was that the forward diving planes were fin-mounted for the first time. The six torpedo tubes in the bow could fire a total of 24 torpedoes. The newly developed S5W nuclear reactor enabled her to remain submerged for a long period and her range was only limited by food stores. The shipyard test run confirmed sensational performance with a top speed of over 30 knots when dived. When the USS Skipjack was transferred to the fleet on 15th April 1959, the US Navy received its first true submersible that could operate submerged for months at a time to secure the safety of fast-moving fleet units. Until their decommissioning the six vessels of the Skipjack Class formed the senior unit of the US submarine fleet. The USS Skipjack was the last submarine of that class to be retired on 19th April 1990.

Markings and Decals

The box contains Decals for all six submarines of the Skipjack Class:

- U.S.S. Scamp (SSN-588), US-Navy, Vallejo, 1961
- U.S.S. Scamp (SSN-588), US-Navy, Vallejo, 1966
- U.S.S. Scorpion (SSN-589), US-Navy, Groton, 1960
- U.S.S. Sculpin (SSN-590), US-Navy, Pascagoula, 1961
- U.S.S. Shark (SSN-591), US-Navy, Newport News, 1961

The decals are printed in Italy for Revell and are crisp and clear but some of the serials have a lot of carrier film which may benefit for careful trimming

The Plastic

Well there’s a lot, but not a lot either, let me explain, the hull is massive and has 4 parts to it, unfortunately with some very big sprue gates, that will probably require filling. As for the rest of the plastic there isn’t a lot, there are a small selection of clear pieces there are for the lenses of periscopes and there are small metal pieces for detailing of the hull.

In Conclusion

The original kit was built as a RC model and the RC fittings are still available from the US, this is a very impressive kit and one that will be on the bench very soon, there are some issues to overcome with the sprue gates. The interior of the sub has very sturdy locating points so should go together very easily and make a superb display piece
