Well the Holy Grail of Tornado kits landed yesterday and what a lovely feeling it was again having a 'new' GR.1 kit in my hands.

First off I would like to thank Revell for the review sample and applaud them for obviously listening to modellers by re-issueing this iconic kit.

So, whats in the box I hear you say. Well, there is seven sprues in light grey plastic and two in clear, the instruction booklet and a huge decal sheet.

Markings are for :-

ZG791 of 31 Sqn Bruggen 1995 80th Anniversary fin
ZA462 AJ-M of 617 Sqn. Lossuemouth 1992
ZA447 EA 'Mig Eater' of RAF Tornado Det. Tabuk 1991

Decals are in perfect register with a plethora of stencils.

As for the plastic, considering the moulds are 17 years old they are still relatively flash free.

The RAF GR.1 specific sprue with 2250ltr fuel tanks, lbg's, 1000lb'ders, Sky Shadow and LRTMS pod.

This version of the kit comes with a very good representation of the IDS/GR.1 instrument panels.

Summary.

Well, for one am delighted by this release as, currently, this is the best kit of the Tornado there is. Well, until Revell release there stunning 1/48 kit. ;)

This kit is highly recommended.

Ok, so much for the kit. What about the build? Well, having built a few and read one or two online builds I think it best that I point out one or two things to watch for.
Posted Image

First up is the Sidewinders. Fairly straight-forward. DON'T put the fins on backwards. :)
Posted Image

As for the exhaust parts (62 & 63) they should be identical when looking at them. To achieve the correct orientation cut off the small tab on part 62 and turn it 180 deg.
Posted Image

Lastly, the intake vortex generator should only be present in the port side. So do not use part 75.

There has been mention made in the past that the fin and front fuselage areas are not 100%. Well I, for one, am very happy with how it looks when built and I will certainly will be buying and building the Revell 1/32 Tornado for many, many years.
