Airfix 1:48 Gloster Meteor F.8 (A09182)
WL123; No 111 Squadron, RAF North Weald, Essex, England, 1954.

2017#3

Here is my attempt at the rather nice recent Airfix kit completed totally OOB and brush painted in a combination of Airfix starter pot acrylics with Revell Aquacolor Aluminium being used for the under surfaces. It was finished with a coat of Flory Dark Dirt wash, after which, in the absence of a silk varnish, I mixed 50/50 Matt and Gloss Aquacolor varnish for it’s final coat.

A kit I can thoroughly recommend, fit throughout was excellent, however care has to be taken with the nosecone. Decals worked well and settled using Decalfix although it would have been nice for the sheet to be a little larger to give a bit more space to cut the things off.

I will definitely be getting another one and this time opening up the gun and engine bays. It looks like the camera lenses are supplied for the FR9 on the clear sprue so looking forward if or when Airfix release this version.

Yes, very nice build, I would never be able to achieve such great finish with brush.

@ Martin Why not able to get that with an brush? I think thats an matter of thinning the paint. I do brushpaint with Humbrol, not latest production. I thin the paint paint the moldel lighter colours first. Than add the second coat of also thinnend paint. Than it covers well and I'm happy how it looks. I agree brush painting acrylics is other story.

Hi Eric maybe it is about practice and good brushes. If I will start to practice with brush more and more I could get good result.
Was the same with an airbrush at the beginning was long traininig to get suitable finish, but still learning..and Revell cleaner is great tool to clean paint off if something went wrong.
Do you think that well thinned enamels are easier for brush painting as acrylics?

I do have acrylics, but in general i do not paint the entire model in acrylics. But for parts like a seat or wheels acrylics is fine and dries much faster than oil based paints. Also I use acrylics white of Tamiya as that does not yellow. I airbrush the white on, but in multiple layers of white and drying time in between coats about 15 minutes. I think painting acrylics in two coats will do. But do not forget to prime the model first when you paint acrylics.
