The Kit

This is a New tool of the Mk IXc and has been eagerly awaited by many, however there has been mixed comments after the photographs of the test shot build up, mainly due to the excessive surface detail. There have also been questions about the dihedral of the wing.

Below are the sprue shots of the kit, on first glance there are a couple of things that you notice; in places there are very large sprue gates, which without care could scar you model. The second is the amount of flash in places on the plastic. I understand that this kit shares some parts with the slightly older Mk1 but even so, for a kit less than 2 years old, should there be that amount of flash?

Anyway see for your self

The instructions....

These are the normal Revell booklet style with 20 pages covering the 75 steps of the build, the Paints are in Revell callouts only and some require mixing.

The decals

These are very clean and crisp and in perfect register with minimal excess on each decal. Printed in Italy.

- Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc, No. 416 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, Tangmere, England, May 1944
- Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc, No. 601 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Fano, Italy, November 1944

In Conclusion

This is a welcome release of a Mk IX spitfire, of note the kit appears to be missing the armour plate behind the seat. There also is the choice of the fishtail or normal exhausts. As for the dihedral of the fings, well see for your self

On the intial tape together the fit looks good and shouldn’t cause too much bother.

Everybody is doing large moulding gates these days, I suppose it's in order to prevent short shots. I can live with a little bit of flash (probably a production issue), but it does look very rivety - I was looking at one the other week and from memory they didn't seem quite so pronounced. Mr Surfacer should fix it. The model on the instruction sheet has very flat looking wings, dihedral should be 6° at wing datum which is approximate to the leading edge. This is an important Spitfire feature, so if the geometry isn't correct it will need fixing during construction. The port wing on your head on view isn't far off. The two bulges over each wheel bay are post war features, so it indicates Revell looked at a warbird during their research. For a wartime airframe they would not be present.

From someone who thinks the only difference between marks of Spits are the number of prop blades , this looks good to me

It does look a littles rivetty, but possibly as much of an issue with us geriatric brush painters.

Interested to see how it builds up.
