Embraer 190

The Embraer 190 (and 195) is a stretched version of the Embraer E Jet family, used as a 100 seat regional/feeder liner by a number of operators. In common with the current generation of airliners it is a very graceful and attractive looking aircraft with its swept wing, winglets and elongated fuselage. I have to admit, like many aircraft modellers, civvie subjects don't figure largely on my personal 'radar', but when you look at such a pretty looking aeroplane as this one, you have to wonder why we prefer the warlike stuff. Maybe it's the gloss white paint finishes that put us off?! Enough pontificating, the kit is a reissue of the Embraer 195 'Air Dolomiti' from last year - as I understand it the 190/195 airfames are to all intents and purposes externally identical (if anybody can refute this, please feel free!). The box art features an impressive image of a 190 at altitude wearing Lufthansa livery. Note: You can download a version of the image unencumbered with Revell logos etc., that would make a great computer desktop.

The bulk of the components come on two sprues and as is usually the case of airliner models the cabin is a hollow shell, but given the size of the cabin windows any sort of interior would be pretty much superfluous. As you would expect from such a relatively new kit the parts are cleanly moulded, apart from a small bit of flash appearing on one winglet and sink marks on the flap actuator fairings. Panel lines are fine to the extent that they are likely to disappear, even under the thinnest coating of sprayed paint, but this is likely to be a moot point with the airliner modeller fraternity in any case:

In no particular order here's some closer views of the components. Some of the undercarriage components are simplified, but if they were more detailed and scalish in thickness they would probably break very easily (the instructions offer a gear up option, but no stand is included). The gear bays have some basic detailing included and the wheels are well moulded all perfectly acceptable for me in this scale. The engines and pylons are nicely done and include the turbofan fronts. You get a one piece cockpit tub with seats and console moulded in, again perfectly acceptable for what will be visible through the windcreen transparency. If you look out for them in the images you can see the sink mark in the flap actuator fairings. These should be easily fixible with a little filler.

Pictured here, the single transparency and decals. The transparency is quite thick and whilst glossy and fully transparent, a lot of distortion is evident. If you want the flight deck visible you will have to live with it, some modellers might be tempted to give it the black paint treatment. The decals are beautifully printed, glossy but quite thick as a result. Of note, they include silver ink for some of the detailing, including the windscreen framing and cabin window surrounds. This is an excellent solution for what would otherwise be a tricky task. The cabin window decal is also there to provide the glazing, although I would be concerned about durability and the possibility of dimples forming within the window openings. It might be an idea to glaze the windows with you're preferred PVA or Clearfix prior to decalling. The decals also include a number of stencils, vents, walkways and door outlines. The main feature is the fin decals in what look like good shades of blue and yellow for the Lufthansa livery. There are also alternative Lufthansa logos that I guess are there for those who would prefer to paint the blue themselves, but this is not explained in the instructions. There is also a wedge shaped blue piece that is unreferenced. Colour density looks excellent and I wouldn't be worried about the logos being translucent, should you wish to paint the blue.

The instructions are the now familiar colour graphic style, in thirty steps and with a comprehensive decal and painting guide. I'm sure there will be some that will express frustration that Revell continue to only quote their own paints, but the commercial reality is that it would be daft to do otherwise. There are plenty of online resources to cross reference alternatives and with this kit we can be thankful that all the paints are out of the pot, there are no mixes required.

This is a very nice looking kit of a very attractive aircraft subject. I'm sure airliner fans will be snapping them up and there are quite a few alternative liveries that could be applied to this one, although at the moment the decal aftermarket only provides for the E195. I'm sure that alternative decals will be in the pipeline, especially as a BA scheme is possible (hint, hint!). The simple nature of this kit means that you should be able to complete it in a few evenings or over the course of a weekend, although it would be worth spending some time over the finishing and application of those gorgeous decals. I would also adjudge it to be a perfect palette cleanser or AMS/stress buster, should you be so afflicted. Recommended.

As a parting shot, I can't resist posting an image of the unardorned box artwork, enjoy.

Having recently been given quite a few A380 and B747 kits I can vouch for just how good Revells civilian aircraft kits are .
This one is of the more manageable size and looks to be an excellent kit of a good looking aircraft
Thanks for the review PB :thumb:

Nice review Paul.
And I'm sure it will tempt a few into getting one.
