Background

The Dornier 17, nicknamed “The flying Pencil” due to it’s slender fuselage, was one of the mainstays of the Luftwaffe and served from the Spanish Civil war onwards, the Z series were the most numerous of the series to be produced, although the Z-10 night fighter version that this depicts was only produced in modest numbers.

Unlike most other night fighters, this plane did not use radar but infa-red equipment to detect targets, the results of which were very disappointing.

For more information on the type, please follow this link to the Wikipedia entry.

The Kit

This kit is a re-box of the 2016 ICM release, kit number 72303. It comes in one of Revell’s end opening containing three gates of grey styrene and in a re-sealable plastic bag, with one gate of clear plastic in a separate bag. A 20-page instruction booklet, decals and safety flyer.

The Plastic

Onto the plastic, which is finely engraved throughout, and whilst there are the odd injector pin marks, I can not see any that would be visible when the kit is made up, but in doubt I would always fill and sand. Observant viewers may notice components for a bomber version, whilst these parts are not used in this kit, with suitable aftermarket markings, other versions of the Z series may be possible.

Sprue A

Contains the main fuselage, tail and cockpit sections, the cockpit in particular appear very nicely done with plenty of detail, which given the expanse of glass, is most welcome. Some aftermarket or scrachbuilt harnesses may and more detail and interest. The U/C is also on the gate and looks exceptionally fine moulded.

Sprue B

The shoulder mounted wing, which again shows some fine engraved panel lines with some U/C bracing moulded into the wheel well roof.

Sprue C

Mainly concentrating on the engines with more fine details. Each engine is built up from 7 separate parts and careful painting would reap large rewards here.

Sprue D

The clear parts. Given the scale they are most likely overscale in thickness, having said that, they are perfectly clear, scratch free and I could not see any distortion when a moved them over my cutting mat grid.

Decals

Being produced in Italy, I am presuming another excellent set for Revell by Cartograph. With a slight flat finish, they appear to have excellent colour saturation and are in perfect register. Backing film is also minimal.

Markings are provided for :

R4 + LK I./NJG2, 1940 – Overall black scheme.

PK + DH, 1940 – Splinter RLM 71/RLM70 over RLM65

Instructions

Construction of the 157 parts are covered by the 20-page instruction booklet over 64 stages plus 4 of painting and stencilling.

Paint callouts are given in Revell colours, although RLM callouts are given in some inststances.

Conclusions

I am really impressed with the quality and detail of this kit, the skill level is quoted as 4 so Revell are suggestion a degree of experience is required before tackling this kit. Given the small parts and intricacy of some of the parts I would have to agree with them.

Nonetheless a kit a can wholeheartedly recommend from my initially impressions. I will append a build review when I get around to building it.

Build has been completed and I have to say the fit was exceptional. For full details please click on the link below.

Many thanks to Revell for the review sample.

Super review John.
Must admit to having a bit of a soft spot for the Do17's looks.
Looks like the kit will build up very nicely indeed.

I thought this kit would be similar in breakdown to ICM's previous Do 215 kits, but it's not, it looks like they started with a clean sheet whilst having a crafty peek at the recent Airfix Do 17. It looks very impressive, must resist.
