![]() MiG-29S Fulcrum 1:72 Scale 03936 ![]() Background The Mikoyan MiG-29 NATO code name “Fulcrum” is a twin engined air superiority fighter initially designed in the 1970’s to counter the west’s F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon and entered service with the Soviet Union in 1982. The MiG-29S is a development of the original airframe given the reporting name Fulcrum-C by the west, it had improved computing and flight control system amongst other upgrades. Details of the type can be found on the embedded Wikipedia link. The “Russian Falcons” is the unofficial name of the Russian Air Force aerobatic display team that was established at the Lipetsk air base in 2006. The Kit This release is a re-box of the 2016 Zvezda kit numbered 7278 and is supplied on 6 gates of grey styrene and one of clear in Revell end opening box also containing the 16 page instruction booklet, decals and safety flyer. Features from the box: Detailed cockpit. Detailed undercarriage Pilot figures. Detailed engine exhaust jets. Choice of auxiliary fuel tanks and missiles Russian Falcons decals sheet. The Plastic An initial inspection of the styrene shows a flash free kit with some quite exquisite raised and engraved details. I have only made one Zvezda release, that being the TOPOL SS-25 which was an excellent kit and this would appear to be of similar quality. I only spotted a couple of injector pin issues, these are on the faces of the main under carriage walls and to a less extent on the cockpit walls. The ones in the cockpit may not be visible when constructed but the two in the U/C bay will need a little attention. Well here’s what you get: Sprue A Intake trunking, U/C legs and bay doors, airbrake, nose cone and stores. ![]() ![]() Sprue A (yes two different A’s?) Fuselage underside, upper wings and main U/C legs. The fuselage has an integral nose wheel bay. Of note here is that the horizontal split of the fuselage stops at the LERX, the forward fuselage is a vertical split section which attaches to the fuselage. Hopefully this will prevent the rather ugly front fuselage steps between the halves which you often get on horizontally split fuselages. ![]() ![]() Sprue B Fuselage top with integral cockpit tub, fins and forward fuselage halves. ![]() ![]() Sprue C (x2) Exhausts, engine faces, FOD covers, wheel chocks, seats and ordinance. A lot of weapons for a kit that if built in the markings supplied doesn’t need them. ![]() ![]() Sprues D & F Sprue D is the clear parts, the canopy frame is easily identifiable and totally clear, I could not see any distortion. Two figures are provided, standing and seated. ![]() In Detail A few close ups to try and give an impression on the depth and level of detail in the plastic. ![]() ![]() ![]() Decals Markings are supplied for three planes, all of the Russian Falcons display team. ![]() The decals appear a little thicker than recent ones I have seem from Cartograph, this may be as the are more glossy given the finish of the prototype being modelled. Colour saturation is good and they are in perfect register. Instructions ![]() Construction of the 192 parts is covered in the 16-page instruction booklet over 54 stages plus one of painting and stencilling. Revell colour callouts throughout. Link to Instructions Conclusions The kit itself looks excellent, panel lines are restrained, it is flash free and shouts “make me”. The provision of FOD covers and wheel chocks are a most welcome addition and will help for those wanting to make a diorama with the finished product. The only major negative related to the provision of markings for in essence one scheme. Now this may be because of producing both gloss and matt markings on the same decal sheet would be difficult, or given that Revell seem to issue “special” scheme aircraft on their initial release it must be a process that works for them. One of the features of this arcraft is that whilst taxing the air ramps shut the main inlet doors and the engines are fed by the auxiliary inlets on top of the LERX, this is not catered for on this kit. Notwithstaging the above a kit I can thoroughly recommend. Many thanks to Revell for the review sample. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. Lovely review John. And it looks to be a cracking kit. However, like you, I would have like to have seen an option for a line jet on the decal sheet. Steve |

That is a great kit .... I've seen the original Zvezda boxing. Adding extra little things like ,FOD guards and chocks is a great idea. Very smart scheme Thanks for the review Andy |

That looks very nice and I like the scheme offered, but another option so that you can make use of the weapons would have been good. The closed auxilliary intakes is a bit of a grockle really, they're open when the aircraft is parked or with the engines running on the ground, with the FOD doors shut. Opening them up will be a little tricky. |

Nice looking kit. I would have to get some aftermarket decals also. I don't like the box scheme. Johnnyb |
