PART ONE

Time for the review build of the very smart looking Embraer 190 Regional jet :)
Got to say its a very nice box art

Posted Image

So diving into the box the first thing I did was fill the sink marks on the flap actuators ( Parts A15,16,17 and B12,13 and 14 )

Posted Image

I then sprayed the fuselage interiors Flat Black , cabin area Dark Grey and the wheel wells the Sand colour that is shown on the paint guide.
I checked on Google Images ...they are a shade not too unlike WW2 RLM 79 Desert Sand so I used Vallejo Desert Yellow as a close match.

Posted Image

The kit includes a cockpit (part B2) but as not much can be seen through the windscreen I didnt spend too much time and effort on this part but its a nice touch that Revell do include it :thumb:

Posted Image

Little tip.....paint the WHOLE of the front cockpit area black.....not just part of it as in the paint guide as you would be left with a white area that can be seen from the outside.

Posted Image

Once painted the cockpit fits to one side of the fuselage ....no problem with the fit :)

Posted Image

I then removed any paint from the surfaces that are about to be glued together for a more stronger bond (painted surfaces will affect the glues bonding strength....always best to take time to remove it from any mating surfaces :thumb: )

Posted Image

Next up I joined both fuselage halves together ....starting at the nose and applying thin cement and letting capillary action gradually work along the length of the fuselage seams.
Fit is superb and no filler was needed , just a few swipes with a sponge pad to avoid flat spotting the curved surfaces.

PART TWO

Time for Stage 3 ....adding the windscreen which normally strikes fear into me because they are normally the most fiddly and difficult things to attach and get right :(
I masked up the windscreen which was an easy job thanks to the well defined window frames....not bad me thinks !

Posted Image

( I later noticed that I needed to trim a bit of masking tape off the top of the left side frame :) )

Then I held my breath and glued the windscreen into place with white PVA type glue .....WOW !!
The fit was exceptional and my initial fear was unfounded ....great job Revell

Posted Image

Stage 4 and 5 is where we attach the main wheel well (B7)to the lower fuselage insert (A6) and then fit this to the main fuselage in step 5 .
Fit again was very good and only a tiny amount of Vallejo Putty was need to fill a small gap at the front of the join.....just a few swipes with a sanding stick was all that was needed to finish it off.
Very quickly we have the fuselage completed.

Posted Image

Stages 6 ,7 and 8 show us the making of the wings. They are made up of upper and lower halves.
Take care when removing the wing parts due to quite thick gates that attach them to the sprues.
Cut slightly in front to avoid damaging the leading edges ;)
As Paul mentioned in the In Box Review , there is some flash around one of the winglets that needs to be removed .

Posted Image

Simply glue the halves together , fit once again is spot on B)

Posted Image

I then glued the wings on ...fit is very positive ....no filling required and you could even leave them off till the end of the build to avoid masking up.
In stage 9 we fit the stabilizers/tail-planes and again fit is superb giving the correct dihedral :)
Also to be fitted is part A4 which I think maybe an additional vent for the rear APU....this sits proud of the surface as shown HERE on a very similar E170.

After only a few hours work we have an E190 taking shape with the tiniest amount of filler used :yipee:
Looking like a great kit up to now :thumb:

Part Three soon.....

Part Three

Stages 10-15 involves building up the engines and as with other Revell civvy kits these are very well represented B)
A total of 8 parts makes up each engine , 5 for the actual engine and 3 for the cowl/cover.

Quite straight forward but take note of Part A24 in stage 11....

Posted Image

It has a very small tab at the bottom that is not shown on the instruction diagrams !!
This slots into a cut out at the bottom of the turbine /compressor that is sub assembly stage 10.

Posted Image

I painted the sub assemblies Aluminium/Gun Metal before placing them into the engine cowl parts (A18,21,28 and 29)

Posted Image

Last pieces of the engines to go on were the front cowl lips (parts B23).

Posted Image

Fit of all parts was excellent and all i did was clean the seams with a few swipes of a fine sanding stick.
I will leave the engines off to ease painting....the fit is good enough to do this :thumb:

I then added the flap actuator parts to the wings and fit of these parts was , again, excellent :)

Posted Image

Stages 20 - 30 involved constructing the undercarriage , I am choosing the wheels down option .
The nose wheel leg was added first , B32, and then part B34 is cut into three as shown in the diagrams to make up the nose wheel doors.
The fit of part B34c was not brilliant and needed some putty/filler.
I glued the two smaller doors (34a/b) at this stage too.

Posted Image

Main undercarriage parts are made up of 2 parts , I fitted the leg parts B35/37 first and then a pair of tweezers came in handy for fitting the leg strut actuators (B36/38) to the legs.
Even though they have positive location holes and are quite a strong build I chose to give a bit of extra strength to the joins by using some thick CA.

Posted Image

Now its on its legs I couldnt resist another dry fit of the engines ....starting to look the part B)

Posted Image

Paint shop next !!

PART FOUR - Painting Stages

After a quick rub down to clear any dust/fingerprints/glue I masked up the engine faces and exhausts ready for the first coat of paint .

Posted Image

Im using Stynylrez Grey Primer for the base coat.

Posted Image

After leaving to dry for 30 mins it is dry enough to handle.....first things I noticed that needed attention :fp:

Posted Image

Posted Image

White plastic is very good at hiding faults......the top fuselage seam needs extra work and the windscreen area needs some putty to make it more flush with the fuselage.
Not massive jobs but this is why I always prime a model before starting the final colours as its far easier to see hidden seam lines under a coat of grey paint :thumb:
Thats tomorrows job though ;)

I don't know how compatible Mr Surfacer is with Stynylrez, but that's what I'd be thinking of using to deal with the seams. Mr Surfacer 500 painted on straight out of the jar, however many repeats it takes to fill the gap, then cut it back with foam sanders. Neat Stynylrez might do the trick if it's gloopy enough.

I've heard many people say Mr Surface is good stuff but I've yet to use it ......something I'll look at next time mate :thumb:
I'll probably use my homemade sprue and Xtra thin cement filler ;)

PART FIVE ; Sanding and more Paint !

Got the sanders , sponges and Micromesh out and after half an hour of work on the top seam I was happy to give the area a quick blast of primer to see if it was any better.....

Posted Image

...job done ! :yipee:

White next....which white to use though ?? :hmm:
I did ponder using Halords Appliance White from a spray can but after a few goes on a spare kit I thought it best not to as I was not getting a uniform coverage due to the lack of control when using the can.
I therefore got out Vallejo Model Air Satin White and applied a light misting , left to dry for 30 mins and then another light misting ......the idea is to build up the colour gradually .
I left overnight and then today I applied another couple of coats and got to the stage where Im quite happy with the colour density :)

Posted Image

I later realised that I didnt need to paint the horizontal stabilizers as they are grey...Doh ! :-/

Ill leave overnight to fully dry before masking off ready for the Grey to be applied to the wings and the stabs .

PART SIX - Final painting and details.

Masked up the fuselage ready for the wings and stabilizers to be painted....there is a plastic kit in there somewhere :D

Posted Image

I dont have many Revell paints and , as I thought , I didnt have the colour called out for the wing and stabilizer areas , namely 371 , so I looked up a suitable replacement and according to the conversion chart I have it quoted Vallejo Pale Grey 046 so I gave this a go.
It looked a bit too dark but I can live with it ;)
I then masked of the leading edges for the silver de-icing areas.
After unmasking everything I was happy that there was no areas that needed touching up . :)

Posted Image

Final details painted on the two engines ....very nice Revell :thumb:

Posted Image

I then fitted the main u/c doors which clicked on as the fit was that good and just a touch of Xtra Thin Cement to hold them in place.
I also re painted the wheel wells.

Posted Image

Final things to add were the wheels and the engines , again they went on with no problems and the engines could be left off until after decaling if needed.
Now have a fully complete model just waiting to be glossed up ready for the decal stages :yipee:

PART SEVEN ; Preparation for decals

After applying 3 coats of Klear by brush for a nice glossy surface for the decals I then turned to the window problem....lack of them ....thats the problem ! :D
There are no clear parts for the cabin windows , therefore if you apply the window strip decal then it is most likely to dimple due to having nothing to adhere to.
In the old Airfix DC9 model you apply a window strip decal over the window gaps and then , when dry , use a little plastic part provided with the kit to make openings. Unfortunately what you end up with are lots of tears on the decal edges which are a pain to get to adhere to the kit again.
In the In -Box review of this kit Paul had recommended applying some PVA to the window openings before applying the window strip decal so I shall try this route :thumb:
Out with the Glue n Glaze (any good quality white PVA glue will do ).

Posted Image

Very simple job....just dip a cocktail stick into some of the PVA and then place in the opening and , while removing the stick , slowly rotate the stick along the sides and then pull away...simples

Less than 10 minutes to do them all.

Posted Image

Just leave for a few hours , or overnight , to dry clear.

Decals next :yipee:

PART EIGHT : Decals and done !

Decal time ....but before I started I noticed something ....

Posted Image

If you want an accurate model then you need to fill the first cabin window on the starboard side....not mentioned in the assembly.

I just filled over the PVA glue window with Vallejo putty.
Im very pleased at how the cabin windows have turned out , something Ill do on future airliner builds.

Posted Image

The decals themselves worked beautifully and for an airliner there are a surprising amount to apply. Colour depth was excellent and they react well to the Micro Set and Sol decal solutions.

Posted Image

I used the decals for the tail fin and these went on with no fuss.

Posted Image

NOTE There are separate yellow logos provided if you want to paint the fin in Lufthansa Blue but there is no mention of this option in the assembly or paint diagrams !!

The only decal I had a problem with was the siler frame for the cabin windows.....I managed to place the first strip on the wrong side and then I couldnt remove them without damaging them ....my fault entirely not Revells'....so no silver frames for the windows on my model :$ :fp:
After a few hours decals were complete :yipee:
Normally I would now give the model a panel line wash and so I gave a light wash ....nothing too dirty as these aircraft are normally kept well cleaned.
As Paul mentioned earlier the recessed panel lines are quite fine and a lot of them didnt show up with the wash .

Posted Image

Conclusion

Another excellent airliner kit from Revell !!
Gone are the days of airline kits being basic and lacking in detail....this even has a cockpit !
This is a very good representation of a very attractive aircraft.
Assembly was without any problems , decals are superb and all in all a very enjoyable and quick build.
Highly recommended !
Many thanks to Revell for the review sample and giving me the enjoyment of building it :thumb:

The cabin window that's blanked over is actually a white shape on the decal window surrounds. :slap: ^_^
