Make sure the tiles are on securely.
Not sure if this one had tiles???? :D

Anyway, the build progresses with the 3rd application of putty and sanding to come. Then I can get on with painting and be adding the fiddly bits and finally figuring out how I will mount it to the B747.
Logic says all of the birds would have been tiled..... B)
You are right Nigel, I found some pictures of Enterprise at the Intrepid museum which shows the tile pattern...

Next round of putting in work, All major assembly complete on the shuttle now. I was going to start to paint but both my airbrushes are U/S! :(

Since the shuttle windscreen was such a poor fit I have had to putty part of it, which means I will have to paint the windows. I did start to look around for aftermarket sheets that include the windscreen decal. Either they don't have them included or are OOP. I notice the last issue of this kit include the decal but I am not going out to buy it just for the one decal. I just realised I have a 1/72 Revell shuttle in the latest boxing which has a nice decal sheet. I think I might scan and resize it for said windscreen decals!

So on to the B747, I have filled the cabin window openings with superglue and am waiting a few days for it to set. Also assembled the wings and stabs.

I also note that Draw Decal do a very nice original shuttle carrier sheet which I might obtain as it is much nicer than the kit supplied sheet

Photos to follow

The Shuttle is getting there...

The SCA fuselage had the cabin windows filled with superglue and mounting paraphernalia installed.

The fuselage was then buttoned up, and I could not resist a little test fit :D

Some adjustment is required. I borrowed the stand from another build and will have to make up a new one. The acrylic rod was a bit wobbly so I might have to use brass to give it some more rigidity.

Sorry Nigel, sometimes I can't see a signature block for looking. Mind you there are a lot out there who like to remain anonymous on forums (for some reason).

So back to the build. Looking at the last picture I am sure I need to adjust both the attitude of the SCA and the reduce the separation distance of the shuttle. Once the support structure is added it should hide some of the clear rods.

I am enjoying this build, I just need to get my airbrushes working so I can get some painting started. The other issue I have is whether to re-scribe since both kits have raised detail (that has or will be destroyed once the glue and putty dries).

Filling, sanding, filling sanding. I managed to start attaching closed gear doors and some engine assembly.

Been distracted with a long term build that I want to get finished, so am working on this one as time permits.

Putty, file, sand, repeat.

Just when you think a surface is ready for paint, I find another divot or pin hole in the puttied areas. Does this bother others or do you just start painting anyway?

So the engines started to go together and I installed the glazing on the 747.

Still considering buying the Draw decal sheet for the carrier....

Depends how I feel, and also how the build is going.

Great stuff so far and loving the display idea.

Really looks nice, Ray. I will definitely fill and sand, but I stop well before it drives me crazy!

It seems the holes I find are a little too deep for filler primer, though it does reduce them somewhat.

Ray, generally I use a primer coat of paint, then light sanding to reveal imperfections, then re-apply thinned putty and repeat the process.... :woo:

Finally some progress shots,

Almost finished with the filling and sanding. I am happy with the cabin windows.

mostly...

Forgot to add the last gear doors and now have had to putty them

Posted Image

Engines are assembled and puttied, the top one was a bit of a problem child during assembly and I have not had a chance to sand the putty in this shot.

Posted Image

The shuttle smaller engines are now attached and I think it is ready for paint.
