Focke Wulf Fw 190D-9

Background

The Focke Wulf 190 was one of the most important fighters to the Luftwaffe in WWII, designed by Kurt Tank in the late 1930 it started operating over France in 1941 much to the consternation of the RAF as it displayed superior performance in virtually aspect to the Spitfire Mk. V then in service.

The D series was a reengineered version of the 190 with the Jumo213A 12 cylinder liquid cooled engine replacing the air-cooled BMW 801 engines, this change of power plant both increased performance and reliability of the type.

The Kit

This is Revel’s first re-box of the Eduard kit first released in 2010 under kit number 8184, although Revell have released several versions of Eduard’s other 190’s in the past. This kit consists of 144 parts of finely moulded hard dark grey styrene contained on 5 gates and one of clear.

The kit comes in one of Revell’s now standard end opening box with nice box art showing a brace of Dora’s engaging a flight of Spitfires. The finished kit will measure 21.5cm by 20cm.

The plastic itself shows absolutely no signs of flash, I can not see any injector pin marks that would be visible on the completed kit, however there are a few scuff marks caused by the plastic rubbing together in the single bag in transit. That being said the marks are not deep and should not cause problems during finishing.

The Plastic

Sprue N (??? No I don’t know why either)

The clear sprue includes four canopies but only two are mentioned in the instructions of note, should you wish to display it this way, the fuselage machine gun bay cover is also clear.

Sprue P

Containing the wings, exceptionally fine engraved panel lines are evident here and throughout the kit to be honest. There is raised wheel bay detail and you may be able to see that there are bays cut into the upper wing at the root, these are for the wing machine guns which can also be displayed open.

Sprue R

Main fuselage parts displaying the same restrained panel lines and a standard fuselage machine gun cover if you did not want to use the clear part.

Decals

Printed in Italy (Cartograph?) the decals show the same excellent colour definition as most new releases by Revell, they are in perfect register and do not foresee any reason why they should cause any problems. A decal is included for the spinner spiral.

Markings are provided for:

Focke Wulf 190 D-9, Werknr. 500666, II./JG 301, Erfurt-Nord, May 1945

Focke Wulf 190 D-9, Werknr. 210194, I./JG 2, Aachen, 1 January 1945.

Instructions

The construction is covered in the all colour instructions through 50 stages plus four of painting and decals placement. Colour callouts are from the Revell pallet, however several quote the relevant RLM numbers and some require mixing. There are various sites offering paint conversion charts should you not have Revell colours in your collection.

Conclusions

In my opinion this is a fantastic kit, Eduard are known for their attention to detail and quality products, given the packaging I would suggest this has been produced by them and packaged by Revell. It shouts quality and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Many thanks to Revell for the review sample.

Having built a few Wurger  I can confirm the Eduard kits (both BMW and Jumo engined versions) are fabulous and a joy to build. And as the 190 is my No.1 aircraft I am particularly fussy about 190 kits.
