Grumman A-6E Intruder 1:48 Scale (04578) Background Original designed to be a replacement for the venerable Skyraider, the Grumman A-6 Intruder was a mid-winged twin jet attack aircraft that served with the U.S.Navy and U.S. Marine Corp between 1963 and 1997. For further information please follow the Wikipedia Link The Kit This Revell Monogram kit would appear to date from 1992 (according to the embossed copyright mark on the tail plane Grrrr) and this appear to be the 1996 issue of the kit. It comes in a large top opening box with a rather less than dramatic box art showing both the hi and lo viz schemes available in the box ![]() Features as stated on the box: Detailed cockpit interior. Two crew figures and detailed seats Detailed landing gear Structurally detailed surfaces Optionally open or closed canopy 8 mark 20 “Rockeye” bombs 12 mark 82 “Snakeye” bombs Two auxillary tanks Aerials 2 “Harpoon” anti ship missiles Disposable armament options (???) Additional parts for TRAM version Colour decals for two versions. The Plastic The plastic comes on 4 large gates of light grey quite hard styrene plus one of clear parts. Given the age of the kit and it’s provenance it’s not surprising that panel lines are of the fine raised variety. I cannot see any intrusive ejector pin marks or sink marks. I have read about the kit suffering from flash, however I cannot see any on my example. The detail in the cockpit etc is not up to modern standards. There have been a lot of aftermarket items produced for this kit over the years, but I cannot comment on what may still be available now. However for my purposes, what’s supplied in the box is quite adequate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and some escapees. ![]() In Detail ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not a kit from this era without: ![]() Decals Printed in Italy, they appear in register with good colours. ![]() Marking options are for: 154170 / NK-500, VA-196 USS Coral Sea 161685 / AA-501 VA-85 USS Saratoga Instructions Construction is detailed over 34 stages plus two of painting and markings. ![]() Colour callouts are in Revell colours only 3 of which will need mixing, conversion charts should be available on line for your preferred paint. Link to Instructions Conclusions I am genuinely surprised at how big this kit is, whilst times have moved on since this was first released some 25 years ago, there is detail a plenty supplied in the box for the average modeller and a good canvas for further detailing whether this is by aftermarket parts or scratch building. A purchase I do not regret, and it is getting built imminently. |
