So here is my first (?) entry to the Star Spangled GB.
The Tomcat is one of my favourite aircraft (and for your info I liked it before 'that' films)
Having just finished one of the Trumpeter Tomcats it will be interesting to see how this older kit measures up. First released in 1981 ths boxing was re-released 1987 as opposed to the one I just finished which was first released in 2010.

So this one was purchased from Kingkit for less than half the price of the Trumpeter/Tamiya Tomcats. Time will tell if it is half the kit. ;)

Upon opening the box I found this collection of parts!

Posted Image

Here are some close ups of some of the main parts. Detail is engraved and is not to bad considering its age (36 years old)

Commendably thin intake walls.

Kit decals. You get a Lo-viz from Sundowners and a more colourful example based at NAS Mirimar, home of the Top Guns.

Posted Image

However as I have a thing for Jolly Rogers aircraft I will be using these for a Lo-viz one from 1994.

Posted Image

which will look like this, although this is AJ214

Posted Image

However, there is a bit of a problem with the Buno supplied.
As you can see the decal you get is 160382, the placement guide has it as 168419 whereas, according to the bible of Tomcatery (M.A.T.S.) AJ200 is actually 160381 which was lost at Goose Creek Island in 1994!!!

So the upshot of all that is that I will need to change the last digit to a 1.

I hope to start this next week and will be built alongside a 1/32 RAF Phantom I am also doing just now.

I'm surprised by how good that kit looks compared to say a first issue 1/32 Tornado :thumb:

Ok, made a start to this today and I must admit it brought a smile to my face. This was because it has been a while since I built a kit that had such 'industrial size' attachment points with the sprues.

Posted Image

Obviously, given the age of the kit there is some flash but not as much as there may have been. Also Revell have very kindly made sure that you'll not get confused which wing half is which.

Posted Image

Detail on the nose leg is a bit soft and I may replace this with a spare I have from my Trumpeter kit.

Posted Image

However the main legs look ok, but I will see how they build up.

Posted Image

Thats all for just now but I have attached the halves of the wings and stabilators. Next is some more clean up of parts then starting the cockpit and rear fuselage.

As you can see the pin for locating the wing is longer on the upper fuselage piece.

Posted Image

This means that for closing the fuselage up the wings need to be in situ. So they are placed on the upper half first.

Posted Image

As well as the stabilators.

Posted Image

This shows the wing in place.

Posted Image

Followed by copious amount of glue, tape and clamps.

Posted Image

Posted Image

And here is the cockpit tub. Not bad at all for its age.

Here is a comparison of the front AIM-54 Phoenix pallet. As you can see the Revell one is pretty much spot on whereas the Trumpeter effort is far to shallow.

Posted Image

However, I will be using the Trumpeter Phoenix as they have sharper details.

Posted Image

Here you see the under nose sensor. For this one Revell would have you cut off the smaller early version and replace it with the kit supplied one. Again I will be using the Trumpeter as it has a better shape.

Posted Image

So here you can see I have attached the Phoenix pallets, the engine faces and the under-nacalle strakes.

Posted Image

Stabilators are now glued in place and have been taped to keep the right horizontal angle.

Posted Image

After checking that the cockpit tub can be slid in I have glued the two halves of the forward fuselage together and attached the nose cone.

Posted Image

And here is the cockpot tub with the various instrument panels recieving a coat of satin black.

That looks like its from a different kit maker when you compare that with the early Tornado kit .
Lovely instrument panels :thumb:

So here is the cockpit tub with a little detail painting. I know its not 100% but it will do for me, although I still need to add some gloss to the screens.

Posted Image

So with the tub painted I could get it installed into the nose section along with the front u/c bay. The nose section has been attached at top along the spine join. Once this is set I will be glueing the underside.

Posted Image

I also put a first coat of white in the intakes and wheel wells.

So here is the Trumpeter nose leg I had spare from the kit. As you can see the detail is sharper.

Intake tunnels and under nose sensor now fitted.

Posted Image

And tails on. Its now starting to look like a Tomcat.

I'm sure it's the camera perspective, but the tails are the same size aren't they ?

It will get another coat of grey tomorrow along with other bits getting painted such as exhausts, canopy e.t.c. Hopefully I can get the decals on by the end of the week.

Then it will be onto my second entry.
