For the Star Spangled G.B. I'll be building the iconic Spirit of Saint Louis. Although this a/c has been issued before by many mfgs. and in a variety of scales, this 1/48 kit from Revell appears to be the most detailed model yet. it comes with two pilot figures, one sitting and one standing... I think most know about the first solo flight from the USA to France....

Thanks Johnnyb. The bare metal part is primarily the front/cowling/prop. The rest is silver doped linen. I'm planning to use the MENG paints, Aluminum and Silver...for this a/c.

Steve, pull up a chair and enjoy the build.... :pop: This looks like a fairly straight forward kit with the minimum of 'fiddley' bits........... :woo:

So nice to see the Spirit :)
I'll follow this to see it in your able hands.

I was recently revisiting documentation on this plane. And found a (fairly) recent article with great photos of the preserved plane in the Smithsonian:

And the cherry on the cake is the 360º panorama of the cockpit here:

Regards.

Ruben; Thanks so much for the "Spirit" references links. The 360 views are fantastic. I'm certain that these references will help me add some authentic details to the kit...

SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS UPDATE

I've been looking at various references on-line concerning this record breaking a/c and the story of this achievement is inspiring. The technology was 'primitive' compared to what was to come.... Revell has included some basic details for the interior that may be improved on. The kit provided seat [ call-outs call for the seat assembly to be painted aluminum, however, period photos show a seat made primarily of wicker. Looking real close the kit part has a faint wicker pattern on one side. I think this can be improved on by replacing the kit seat with an aftermarket resin item. [ WWI wicker seat ]. Accordingly I've ordered some seats from ROLL MODELS.

The kit provides two figures, on sitting and one standing....but, only one head... So since I want to do both figures I'll be looking into the spare parts bin to find a suitable donor. Most likely donor head will come from an old AURORA 1/48 WWI pilot figure.....note: the transplant patient won't feel a thing.... :nerd:

I saw somewhere else somebody do the planished effect cowling on a WnW Fokker EII using Molotow Liquid Chrome pens. It might be a technique you could use on this model.

Always glad to help :thumb:
The Spirit of St Louis is also one of my favorites, and I enjoy seeing it build.
Oddly, I have not build a plastic one yet. :$ (but I've built several paper ones).

Will you make the nose as it was on the historic flight? Or as it is displayed now with the flags?

Regards

I'm thinking with the flags..........they were added after the historic flight and were first seen in the 1927/28 time frame....also. it will add some eye-interest/appeal .

Thanks for the tip Paul, I'll check this product out. The kit does come with some interesting decals that are to be applied over an aluminum finish.......the look of the custom made nose of this plane has always presented a challenge to replicate the prototype in a model........... :thumb:

SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS UPDATE

Some additional progress:

I soaked these kit parts in a mild detergent and warm water to remove any residue left from the molding process.

Some painting on parts still on the sprue...

Thinned auto spot putty [ thinned with paint grade acetone] applied where needed by small brush....

Quick progess George! That bird sure has a wide wingspan. Flying it must have been like flying a kite. Nice work with the filler. You definitely do it old school with the auto spot and acetone. I remember a guy in a club I used to belong to that would melt plastic to use as filler.

Johnnyb, Some acetone is 'hotter" than others. once I tried using pharmaceutical grade Acetone and it melted plastic in an instant.....so I've been using the paint thinner strength Acetone..... One advantage is that the putty application dries quickly allowing construction to move along ............. :woo: Another is that when thinned it can be applied with a paint brush and it flows into gaps w/o a lot of additional sanding........... :thumb:
