Finally found some time to make a start on this one...

First off, here's the box . . .

Posted Image

the bagged parts, instructions, and decals . . .

Posted Image

and the sprues .

Posted Image

I started by making up the lower hull . . .

Posted Image

Posted Image

then assembled the wheels, sprockets, idlers, and return rollers.

Posted Image

I will attach these to the hull sides, then I'll add the hull top.

That's all for now, stay tuned . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Yes it was. it's the old Matchbox PK-79 . . .
Here's a close-up of the sprue, still showing the 'PK-79', and where the 'Made in England' had been removed from the tool . . .

Interesting. I've seen some of those Matchbox kit built up and they look pretty good.

They're nice kits, well engineered, although with a few quirks.
I especially like the way the tracks are joined, with the tab and loop. I also like the small sprue gates ( are you listening, Airfix?). There are some unusual subjects available, too, who'd do a Comet, rather than a Cromwell?

cheers,
Robin.

Some more progress today, I've finished the basic assembly on the hull . . .

Posted Image

I'm not happy with the joint on the right hand side, there's a bit of a gap, but some filler should sort it out. The fenders aren't attached until after the hull sides and running gear are painted, and the tracks put on . . .

I've also completed the turret . . .

Posted Image

I did break one off the legs off the .50 mount, but I managed to re-attach it. I'll attach a 'handle' to the turret underside later, to allow me to 'handle'it when painting it.
That's all for now, stay tuned . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Thanks, TimJ . . .
Okay, I've managed to fill the poor joint to my satisfaction, I used acrylic paint thickened with corn flour (starch), put into the gap, then the excess removed with a wipe moistened with acrylic thinners.

So now it's off to the paint shop for a coat of Tamiya Spray Primer.
Stay Tuned . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Here she is in her primer coat, it's a little bit patchy in places, but I'd rather have too little than too much, and lose some detail . . .
The hull and running gear,

The turret,

The fenders,

and lastly , the tracks.

I don't claim any originality for the filler idea, I got it from the Airfix Tribute Forum. You can use acrylic or enamel paint, cornflour, talcum powder, or anything else suitable, and either a contrasting colour to show where the filler is on the model, or a matching colour so that the filler doesn't show under the final paint job. The real beauty of this filler is that it doesn't attack the plastic, and that you can wipe it off while still wet, reducing the amount needing to be sanded off . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Nice work Robin, never heard of you filler idea. Looks like it worked a treat. :thumb:

The Chaffee is one of my favourite tanks, it always reminds of the Battle of the Bulge and Bridge at Remagen movies :D

I have a part started 1/35 Italeri kit somewhere in the stash.

Okay, apologies for the lack of progress, on the one hand, I've been absolutely flat out with work, and on the other, I've had a bit of a problem with the model . . . :fp:
Looking at how this kit is engineered, I decided the the best way to proceed was to completely paint, varnish, and finish the hull sides and running gear, put the pre-painted tracks on, and then attach the fenders, before painting and finishing the hull top and bottom.
So I painted the hull sides, running gear and tyres,

matt varnished them,

then put the tracks on.

As I did this, the paint started flaking off the tracks as I stretched them over the wheels. I attempted to touch them up, but succeeded only in getting paint on the wheels. A re-think was in order. Looking again at how the kit goes together, it was plain that the top run of track is not visible, once the fenders are attached. So, the new plan is, strip the tracks, paint the inside of the tracks, glue them to the sprocket, wrap them around the wheels WITHOUT stretching them, and glue them to the idler, before cutting off the excess. Then I will paint the outside of the tracks before attaching the fenders to the model.
All I need now is some time to do this . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Good progress. I wonder if the tracks would hold paint if you used an enamel?

Don't know, worth a try . . . I'll look to see if I've got any enamel gunmetal paint . . .

Okay, so I put two coats of Humbrol Gunmetal onto the tracks, though it's more grey than gunmetal, and managed to loop them together and fit them onto the model without too much flaking off . . .

Posted Image

I then gave the parts that would be visible a coat of Vallejo Model Color Gunmetal, as it is actually metallic in appearance,
( I like the 'Airfix' look of Gunmetal tracks, even though it's not realistic . . .)

Once the acrylic had dried, I attached the pre-primed fenders, with a couple of drops of cyano glue,

then gave them a first coat of Vallejo Model Color 887/93 Brown Violet, to represent US Olive drab.

I'm wondering whether Tamiya Spray might be suitable for use on rubber tracks, I had to put quite a lot of the enamel on to get it to stick, and lost some of the detail on the tracks, some the sprocket holes filled in, look closely at the pictures and you'l see . . .

cheers,
Robin.
