Time to get this one on the track! This is John Greenwood and Dick Smother's Corvette from the 1971 Sebring 24hr race. Greenwood was the biggest proponent of C-3 Corvette racing. This is probably the best article I've found on him. Worth a read!

Kit decals instructions.

This is a supplemental decal instruction sheet that I printed from the Revell website. First time I have seen one of these. Not sure what the differences are yet, but I will let you know when I get to that stage of the build.

Looking at the decals, I see that the numbers on the decal sheet match the supplemental decal placement sheet. I guess that is why it is provided! Washing the parts now.

Thanks for the support guys! I am also very excited about this build. I just got the engine halves together and I am getting together my paint and accessories for the engine and checking my L88 references. This is my favorite Chevy engine and I want to make it look good. It's a monster at 560 HP ... and between 67 and 69 you could buy it from your dealer! Chevy underplayed the horsepower ratings to discourage the average Joe from buying it. They produced it to qualify for SCCA and FIA road racing. I've built a 1967 and a 1968 L88 Corvette. This will be my first race version.

Progress and pictures soon.

Got a little bit of start on it. This is a very good Revell kit. Been around a little while and the panel lines are starting to get a little soft. I usually leave the extra liece of plastic on behind the windshield while I am working with the body, so the windshield frame doesn't break off.

Posted Image

I then scribe in the panel lines to give them some more definition. I use the back of a dull no 11 blade.

Posted Image
Posted Image

I sanded off the emblems engraved on the body and on the hood and removed the sun visors, none of which are on the the race prepped cars.

Got the engine/transmission block assembled and sanded. There is a little bit of flash on most parts. I cut the locating pins off of the engine parts and they fit better. Painting it with actual Chevy engine orange.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Almost forgot, needed to remove the stock fuel filler. It will be replaced.

Posted Image

Engine painted. The heads are bare aluminum on the 68 L88, so I painted them TS-30 from Tamiya. The little pile of chrome parts in the corner are ones the I will spray with dullcote to tame the shine down. I like the effect of that.

Posted Image

In contrast to the parts above, this pile of parts needs the chrome removed so I can paint them. I never will understand why Revell chromes so many parts that are usually never chromed, like the shocks?!?!? So I put them in a glass jar and spray oven cleaner on them. This will strip the chrome in a couple of hours. Use gloves! This stuff is strong.

The parts are now stripped of chrome.

The engine is complete, except for the alternator. Have to add that tonight. I used an aftermarket wired distributor. I really like the Revell engines. I have to wait to insert the wires into the heads until after I can install the exhaust headers. They don't go on until after the engine is installed.

How will you attach the headers? drill and pin them or a special glue.

Probably just super glue, Nigel.

Hmm a tad weak, what about drilling the headers with (say a 0.5mm drill bit) and ca,ing them. :D

You mean drill and insert a pin? I've done that before for side mirrors.

I need to find some Minilite big and little wheels and tires. The kit wheels are incorrect for the race car. I think I may have a set in a 67 Corvette I have in the stash.
