![]() North American P-51D (early version) Let's skip the blurb about the P-51D, there's countless books, magazine articles, web pages etc that you can refer to if you need all the gen, I think what you all want to see is the plastic, so I'll get on with it! rOK, a box shot to start off with, here's the runners: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OK, that's the plastic, let's try and draw some salient points from it. First off detail is done in incredibly fine panel lines with rivet and fastener detail as appropriate. Personally I like the less is more approach, but if you want more rivets you'll need to invest in a pounce wheel set. The lower engine panel has separate inserts for no louvres, grilles or perforations, so it would seem there's more P-51D issues in the pipeline (more anon). The separate wing spar and one piece top and bottom wing halves should ensure your P-51 never suffers from wing droop. The gear bay correctly depicts the spar as being the rear boundary to the bay. There are a number of pilot holes in the wings, some required for equipping the model with drop tanks, others that presage future releases. Alternative flap parts are provided for retracted or deployed positions. The separate moulded side wall parts will be a boon for those who want to load their model with resin, but are perfectly adequate for those who don't. Cockpit detail generally is perfectly adequate, whilst a few well chosen accessories or sets will elevate it to outstanding, particularly the sort of self-coloured panels that are now common and fabric type seat harnesses. The rudder has moulded rib tapes that should look good under a coat of paint. Separate rear fuselage pieces without the fin root fillet would indicate a 'late version' release as a near certainty. Drop tanks, weapons and wheels are all nicely done, as are the windscreen/side screens, but the canopy itself has visible flow lines and distortions. the latter is a big minus mark on what is a focal point for most aircraft models. Decal research was done by Barracuda Studios, if you've ever had any dealings with Roy Sutherland you will know just how OCD he i about getting things right. The sheet itself is beautifully printed and for me the schemes are well chosen. There are already numerous aftermarket sheets available if you don't like them Notwithstanding the canopy grockle this is a very well done product in terms of engineering and detail and Revell should be feeling pretty pleased with themselves. There's no doubt that further issues based on this set of mouldings are in the pipeline, as well as later fin root fillet production the wing pilot holes would point towards a Korean War era F-51. In terms of accuracy and without resorting to references I'd say it looks pretty well on the money. The model featured on the instructions fly sheet (also on display at Scale Model World) looks fabulous. Now, for the $64,000 question, how does this stack up against the fabulous, but expensive Tamiya kit? In terms of bang for buck I'd say it's hitting the spot. You can't really say it exhibits all the finesse and exquisite detail you get with a Tamiya kit, but at the price you're getting a very complete and well detailed package. With the addition of some PE and/or resin it should look exceptional and your outlay will still be less than the price of a Tamiya kit. As an option for those modellers who would like a well turned out 1/32 at an within budget that doesn't break the bank, this ticks all the boxes. Watch out for a full build log in the very near future. With an RRP of GBP 36.99 it's difficult not say anything other than highly recommended Review sample courtesy of my wallet. Thanks for the comprehensive review of Revell's new P-51. I'll be getting one of these soon... 1/32 is not my scale of choice for A/C models but this new kit looks to cool to pass-up. Of course i'll also need the follow-on 'later" version of the P-51D............ Cheers, ggc Edited by CPNGROATS, Dec 9 2017, 09:46 PM.

It certainly seems as if Revell have hit the sweet spot with this. |

Looks an exceptional kit, shame about the canopy. Do you think you may have just got a bad one or generic? Thanks for posting boss. |

I'd hope it's a one-off, but the fact is a transparent part that size is technically challenging in terms of injection moulding, whilst keeping a lid on the costs. |
