![]() Polikarpov I-16 Type 24 “Rata” 1:32 Scale 03914 ![]() Background The Polikarpov I-16 was the first low wing cantilevered monoplane with retracting undercarriage to enter operational service with any air force. Work began on the design in 1933 and it entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1934 where it was called “Ishak” (Donkey) or “Ishachok” (Burro). In the Spanish Civil it was operated by the Republican faction where it was called “Rata” (Rat) by the opposing nationalist forces. For a more detailed history, check out the Wiki page on this Link The Kit ![]() This is a re-box of the 2017 ICM kit 32001, the 115 parts come on three large gates of grey polystyrene together with on of clear for the windscreen and instrument panel. The plastic boasts both fine recessed and raised details. Given the originals construction of wooden monocoque with fabric covered metal spars in the wing, there is not much in the way of panel detail, however a good attempt has been made to replicate the texture of the fabric covered areas of both the wings and tail. I cannot see any sink marks on my example and whilst there are ejection marks in the inner fuselage, these should not be visible once the kit is assembled. The Plastic Gate A ![]() ![]() Gate B ![]() ![]() Gate C ![]() ![]() Gate D ![]() ![]() In Detail ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Decals ![]() The perfectly in register decals (the white ones are as well, honestly) provide markings for: “White 13” 7th IAP, Leningrad 1941 “Red 41” 4th FAR USSR Navy, Baltic Fleet Aviation, Winter 1941/42. Instructions ![]() The full colour instructions detail the construction in 57 stages plus 4 of painting and stencilling. Colour callouts are again in Revell colours, 3 of which will need mixing, although paint conversion charts are readily available on-line. Link to Instructions Conclusions The relatively low parts count of this 1:32 kit reflects the simplicity of the plane itself, a lot of the parts are quire large but appear to be perfectly moulded and construction should be quite straightforward. Some of the details are really nice on this kit, the engine looks very good and the fabric effect over the wings and tail would be enhanced by some careful weathering. The skill level of 5 is the highest available but I would think that this would build up to a nice replica by anyone of moderate modelling ability. Definitely going onto my bench in the near future and I thoroughly recommend it. Many thanks to Revell for the review sample. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers.
