South Yorkshire Women Development Trust is a charitable trust based in Rotherham that primarily works to get Women into non-traditional trades.

However, we have recently received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to carry out a research and oral history project, entitled 'South Yorkshire Women in Industry over the past 100 years.’ The project aims to research and archive the experiences of South Yorkshire women working in industry over the past 100 years, record their experiences and celebrate their and celebrate their contribution to the region’s heritage.

This project will culminate in an exhibition, workshops and an archive accessible across the region. We are planning on recruiting 10-12 volunteers from the various areas in the region who will then be trained by the Oral History Society to have the skills to collect the oral histories from volunteers that we will recruit ourselves.

We now need volunteers and particpants to take part in the project:

We would like volunteers and participants from all ages, backgrounds and from all areas of the region:

As a volunteer you will;

• receive training on gathering oral history, including how to use recording equipment
• Have the chance to contribute to your local history and build up a bank of knowledge that can be used by local communities.
• Take part in workshops, and an exhibition that will be formed around the information you have collected.
• Gain the skills to research your own community or family - bring the past to life!

As a participant you will:

• Have the chance to tell your story about the way you have lived and worked.
• Play an important role in the filling in of the gaps about women in the history of industrial work in the region.
• Have your oral history archived across the region for future generations to use.
• Meet new people in your area who are interested in local history.
• Take part in workshops, and an exhibition that will be formed around the information you have given.

-Not you?

It could be your Mother, Grandmother, sister or any other relative or friend who worked in such an environment whose story you could tell on their behalf.

We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who can contribute to the project and help us in compiling a lasting picture of women’s contribution to the rich industrial past of South Yorkshire. Please see below for contact details.
