The Master and the Service Garage; Sequel to Slow Business

Hidden within the dives frequented by pirates and smugglers on Carratos was a moderately sized building often kept locked. Only a select group of people knew that the garage was owned by a member of the jedi order. Right now, that building was occupied by two freighters, the YT-2000 known as the Outbound Wanderer, and a YT-1930 being stripped down to use as parts to repair it.

So far, Alaric had replaced the lost starboard escape pod, and had removed the temporary shell of armor on the ventral surface of his freighter. His crew consisted of him, Sienn, and three HK-24 droids. All of which worked almost around the clock.

Right now, Sienn was at a table, working over possible designs for combining the two turrets from 1930 into a single turret, or a system of turrets he could mount to the ventral surface of the Wanderer. They would need to come up with a turret design before he could put the new armor on, so it was vital that he finish this.

Reaching for a cup of stim-caf, Alaric leaned back in his chair. Idly, he wondered if he'd ever meet Dak before he left this world.

Dak, having finally rid himself of the apartment to some family of 3, was cruising Carratos in his old modified E-Wing. He had stashed his payment from Alaric on the fighter, which he had managed to spend nothing of. Dak looked wearily out the cockpit window, finding a good spot to land. The ship began to slow as he took the ship in, touching down on the ground safely. He climbed out of the cockpit, which was stuffed with what few belongings he had, to find a planet that somehow reminded him of Nar Shaddaa. He walked around, coming up to the cantina Alaric had directed him to. Dak was glad he had decided to wear his combat uniform to come here, because things never stayed nice for him.

He casually walked across the room to the bar counter, where of course there was a bartender. "Uh, I'll take a, uh...Corellian, make it spiced," Dak said, looking around the cantina. The bartender grunted, and turned around to fix his drink. Dak remembered what Alaric told him to ask about. The drink was served and Dak pulled back his mouth plate to take a gulp, which was followed by an "Ahhh". Dak looked among the various patrons, wondering what made this world so different but so the same as Nar Shaddaa. Either way, he had to move on.

"I, uh, am looking for the Garage..." Dak said, dropping to a lower voice, "Alaric sent me."

It had taken hours for Alaric to craft a new turret layout so that he'd have an effective turret system on the ventral surface of his ship. In the end, instead of combining the turrets, or splitting, their coverage area, he opted for the mechanically simpler method. He'd link them so that whoever controlled on controlled the other. This would leave a blind spot of about thirty degrees to the aft on the ventral side of his ship, but he'd effectively have a quad turret there again.

"Okay, this is the design I want." Alaric was downloading the blueprints to the HK-24s and explaining it to Sienn at the same time. "Just get them into place, and I'll attach everything. This will also put more of a drain on the reactor, so we'll need to see about amping the power output in some way. I'll get to work on that while you and the droids handle your job."

The twi'lek mock saluted before bellowing at the droids. "Okay scrap heaps, gets the welding and cutting tools! We have about two hours of heavy lifting ahead of us!"

Alaric returned to his work desk and was surprised to see his holostation beeping. Turning it on, he was only slightly surprised to see the bartender of the Blue Hole. "Let me guess," Alaric spoke happily, "somebody showed up asking for directions to the Garage, saying I sent them."

The old human smiled back, laughing heartily. "I gave him directions and sent him on his way. He should be there in five minutes."

"Thanks." Alaric cut the communication and returned to the work at hand. Regardless of Dak's arrival, he needed to get his ship repaired.

Dak entered 'The Garage'. So the old man's data was correct. Good. I'd hate a new set back. Dak thought, as he looked around. "Hello? Anyone home?" he called out. It was pretty amazing, and a little sketchy. At least, to him. Still unsure of the data, he tried to keep a low profile and hidden until he saw the HK-24 that Alaric had on Nar Shaddaa. He left the shadows and began to walk through as calmly as possible. He had noted the ship he had retrieved for Alaric that earned him the the 50,000 credits that had been stowed away.

Dak, no doubt, looked forward to training. He was hoping that he could get to Alaric's level of might (If one were to call it that), even if it took decades of training. He also looked to hopefully becoming a Jedi. Now, most people may be confused since he was so weary of the Jedi, but Dak really thought about it. If people think they're hiring a Jedi to do work for them, they'd pay more. However, they might expect it to be free. Dak decided the odds were fair, and went for Jedi. Of course, once he did training with Alaric and found out more.

The droids were busy at work, so Dak didn't bother them. Instead, he just looked around and called again, "Alaric, its Dak! I decided to show up, and I'm guessing you knew that." He felt like an idiot, but either way-He wasn't in the mood to search for the man.

Alaric heard Dak's greeting, and looked up from the desk he was at. Taking a deep breath, he reached out with the force, and quickly found the young human. It didn't take much longer for him to sense the droid near Dak. Closing his eyes, he focused on the droid. Almost immediately, he was controlling the droid, seeing through its photoreceptors.

At his silent command, the droid turned around and approached Dak. "Hello, Dak. I'm glad that you were able to make it. I'm busy at my desk, so just follow me and I'll take you there." The jedi master smiled lightly as he made a mental note to adjust his speech patterns whenever he controlled the droids.

The force controlled HK-24 turned and moved down the stairs to the lower level with the ships and mechanical equipment were. On the far side, was a large work desk, covered in various blueprints. The pin-board behind it was covered as well. This was Alaric planned out the various upgrades to every part of his beloved freighter.

Breaking the connection with the droid, Alaric raised his hand without turning away from the desk. "Over here Dak," he called, "just stay away from the construction zone."

Dak has followed the droid, and then of course stayed far from the 'construction zone'. Alaric looked about the same, Dak finally took a peek at the blueprints. "Interesting plans," Dak said. He stared for a moment, "That'll need an amp to the reactor to support it of course, but I bet you knew that," Dak said looking at how Alaric had craftily selected his design. "I used to work with a mechanic. He is the one that upgraded and modified my E-Wing fighter. Oh, and of course my compliments to the paint job, but enough about ships. I'm ready to begin when you are, Alaric."

Dak make the visor lighten up, so that his eyes could be seen through the visor. He also decided to pull back the face plate. He fidgeted around throughout his time, he felt strange in Alaric's presence. He eagerly awaited Alaric's response.

"I was raised by Verpines." Alaric dryly informed Dak. "There isn't much about mechanics that I don't know." Looking at the massive, extremely detailed blueprint on the board behind him, Alaric sighed. He was trying to find someway to draw more power from the generator. So far, his safest idea had been an amplifier attached to a series of parallel capacitors.

Pushing away from the blueprints, Alaric turned to Dak. "Our first step is to teach you the basics. I've prepared a room for you on the upper level, which will keep you away from the construction and protect Sienn and the ships if you make a mistake."

The jedi master made his way up the stairs and led Dak to the twenty by twenty room at the back of the Garage. The room mostly featured various tool chests lined up against the walls, and a few cots piled in a corner. Alaric laughed, "It's not the most glamorous of places, but it will do for your training."

Moving to the center of the room, Alaric took a seat on the floor. Using the force, he pulled a hydrospanner off the top of a tool chest and set it on the floor in front of him. "The key to controlling the force, isn't in trying to muscle your way through it. Regardless of if you wish to use the lightside or dark, you need to remain calm, centered. Only then can you gain access to the plethora of abilities at your disposal."

Gesturing for Dak to take a seat across from him, Alaric smiled. "So, your job here is to learn how to keep that state of being calm and centered for as long as possible. Once you achieve that state, levitate the hydrospanner, and keep it up for as long as possible. Then, when you can't keep it up any longer, take a ten minute break. After the break start again."

Dak had followed Alaric in a room, watching and listening to Alaric's instructions. He moved over and sat down across from him, closing his eyes and trying to clam himself. Alaric's words echoed across his head, as calming his mind was harder than he ever realized. Finally, his mind settled down. He focused on the hydrospanner, trying to lift it. Using the Force, the tool wobbled around as it was slowly lifted up. As soon as it came level with his chest, the tool wobbled and dropped. Concentration was on his mind, and he didn't plan on that 10 minute break.

He tried calming his mind, but there was a battle going on it. Tactics he memorized and never used, combat situations he had prepared for and never faced, so on so forth. He opened his eyes, 10 minute break time wasn't a bad idea.

When Dak stopped, Alaric smiled. He hadn't expected the human to do well, nobody ever did on their first time. There was always too much mental interference, generally caused by a common misconception.

"The mind does not exist." Alaric stated boldly as he sat mere feet away from his new student. "Ask any doctor where the mind is, and he'll tell you the same. The brain is a physical organ, yet the mind is nothing more than an abstract. It is used to identify our random thoughts and distractions, to give them form.

Your task right now is to dissociate yourself from this abstract. For now, you have two options, you can directly tackle the task of clearing your mind, or you can stubbornly focus on the task at hand until you succeed. I will admit, the second option is generally the quicker one, but it is your choice. Either way, I can help you."

Alaric lapsed back into silence, waiting for Dak to make his choice.

Dak thought long and hard. He considered each of the options until his 'abstract' could think no more. His choice was all to clear to himself. "I want to directly tackle clearing my mind. Sure, it will take more time...But I think it is a better choice," Dak finally said.

Alaric gave a small smile at Dak's answer. "Very well. Just be sure to stick with it, a partially quieted mind is just something that more garbage will clutter.

Your task is to clear out all the garbage in your mind. Once the garbage is gone, the mind will be quiet, and the abstract concept will cease to have meaning for you. For some people, this is done quickly, for others, it may take a very long time. It all depends on the amount of garbage you've let accumulate."

Alaric let this statement settle before he continued. "The idea behind this exercise is simple. Close your eyes, and view your mind like a rope. A quieted mind is smooth, untwisted, and knot free. However, for every random, meaningless thought you have, there is going to be a kink or a knot. Take a moment, and visualize your mind."

Alaric was silent as he stood up, letting Dak perform the required exercise. He moved across the room and opened the door. Before he left, Alaric called back to Dak. "Now untie the knots, and untwist the twists and kinks. Only when your mind is quiet are to come find me."

Dak closed his eyes, Alaric's words echoed inside his head again. He saw the rope of his mind, sorta, and looked at the tangled rope. He sighed, slowly taking care of each 'knot'. His mind was slowly being cleared, but to all but misfortune the battle inside his mind continued. Voices raged through from other people, as figures resembled people he had seen in past times. All being slowly eliminated. He opened his eyes, to find he was sweating. "A fake battle just made me freak out a little, that's all," he thought out loud. He closed his eyes, to find new tangles were found. He most likely spent hours focusing on removing the battle from his mind. Few thought that had never come up before also crossed his mind, as he cleared away the garbage.

Dak stood up, and paced the room for a moment. Taking a break as he had done a few times before. This would probably just accumulate more thoughts, but he had time. Hour upon hour he spent, clearing his mind. Until finally, it came to one last knot on the rope that Alaric had him visualize. You could say its the thoughts about those he killed and the thrown aside guilt. This was probably hardest to rid himself of, though. He hadn't slept for a long time, but he felt up to speed. He wondered what Alaric had done in all this time. Added to his curiosity, was how long had he been clearing his mind?

Either way, once more Dak paced the room. Wondering if his mind was clear enough or not. He assumed it clean, and he walked to the door and left the room in search of Alaric...

The jedi master had returned to his work with the blueprints. During his time working with Dak, Sienn and the droids had attached the extra turret, and were now awaiting further instructions. Now was the time to work on the controls.

Setting up a direct video feed was simple enough. Now, the gunner of the original ventral turret would be able to see what the new one was aiming at. All that was remained was running the new power supply lines to the new turrets, and establishing the control measures.

Which explained why Alaric was deep within the guts of his freighter, running the new lines directly to the power core. Sienn was busy with firmly anchoring the turrets in place and making sure that the range of motion each one had kept them from firing on each other. The three HK-24s were sectioning and building the needed layers of armoring that would cover the entire ventral surface of the freighter.

Connecting the lines to the power core, Alaric felt a different presence in the force. Smiling, he called to his twi'lek friend. "Sienn, Dak has finished the mental cleansing. If you would, tell him to continue with the levitation exercises."

The green skinned twi'lek swore loudly before crawling out of the turrets. Alaric chuckled as Sienn moved to handle the message. The twi'lek was brash, rude, and overly sarcastic, but he'd deliver the message.

Alaric put Dak and Sienn from his mind, and returned to the task at hand. Right now, he needed to repair and modify his ship.

Dak looked at the ship's progress, as it had come far wand was looking great when a Twi'lek approached him. He was told to continue with the levitation exercise, and so he returned to the room. He sat in front of the hydrospanner, and closed his eyes. His mind felt clear, and so he could easily concentrate on the tool. It began to float up some. Instead of fronting all his power on pulling it up, he tried to increase the time he could hold it up at a low point.

The tool hovered approximately 3 inches off the ground, and every minute Dak would attempt to raise it. He lasted exactly 55 seconds, of course he was keeping count for the sake of his training. He tried again, at 1 inch. He held it for a minute, and it rose. He held it for another minute, so it rose again. Another miraculous minute passed, and it rose to 4 inches. Dak's face scrunched a little, his grip was slowly fading. He made it about 15 more seconds, before it dropped.

Dak frowned, and wondered: Is this how it always is at the start? Why is it so hard to command the Force for me? Is it because I'm inexperienced, or because I'm weak? He tried again, and he stopped focusing deeply. He let energy just flow through him, not just direct it, but flow through him to his target. He relaxed up, but still remained focused. To all but loss, the hydrospanner made it to 6 inches, and stayed there by Dak's will for approximately 10 minutes before Dak stopped. He felt tired, but finally understood something he had only heard in tales.

The Force isn't a direct thing forced at something, it is a free flowing energy that goes by the will of concentration. With this small discovery, he laid back on the floor and began to let his mind roam his discovery.

Alaric smiled as he connected the last of the power supply lines. Dak would be struggling through the lesson by this point, just like every jedi did when they began. Still, Alaric had no doubt that the young human would reach the proper realization.

To be simple: you couldn't force the force. He'd taught Dak to clear his mind so that he'd remain calm. Only when one was calm, centered, would the force flow easily. That was the greatest challenge facing a jedi, remaining calm at all times. Only then would they be at their strongest.

"Okay Sienn, give the turrets a spin and make sure they don't take each other out." While Sienn was doing that, Alaric had to make sure that the power supply lines were properly placed. The last thing he wanted was for the connections to come undone when the turrets were swiveling.

Once the turrets were checked, Alaric gave a cheer of happiness. "Okay, those are done. Sienn, you work with droids and attach the belly armor while I finish wiring up the controls for the turrets. Then we'll be able to give a few practice shots."

With that, Alaric slipped his work goggles back on and began rewiring each connection and control for the turrets. In about thirty minutes, he'd have completely reintegrated the new turrets into his ship.
